Which commanders do you think are the 10 most powerful Commanders in the set? Are you planning on building any? What are the hot pieces of tech that we missed?
I've been looking into a few commanders. Lord of the Nazgul is pretty wacky. I built it as wraith 'tribal' (really just the wraiths from the new set, minus the 6 mana witch king.) Didn't think the Nazgul would be all that good but getting four or five +1/+1 counters on a board of dudes who turn into base 9/9s is great. Still debating on if I'll commit to this or not. Sauron, the Dark Lord seems like easily the best of the Saurons we got. I built him as aristocrats, and he's solid. Can consistently get 4 to 6 bodies a turn cycle that you're instantly saccing. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this guy makes more tokens than any other Aristocrat commander we've gotten. But that said, I have looked at a wheeling spellslinger deck, because I did see people building that. It seems... good? Not a big fan on it though since it utilizes the thoracle combos for winning. I'd rather my commander play a role in my victory. Saruman is someone I'm debating on building - the esper theft one. Can't decide if it's any good. I feel like he grows in power the higher the power of your group is, because realistically just freecasting your opponents' tutors will be great for getting up your combo. Not to mention things like card draw or removal or ramp. Frodo, Sauron's Bane is also someone I'm debating on building. Him w/ Lurrus as a companion seems good for a hatebear/stax deck. After locking your opponents out, you can just take turns poking them. And Lurrus ensures you can get recur any hate pieces that go to gy. Other than those four - I also built Shelob, the golgari one. It's... interesting. Definitely fun, but it's spiders so even if I bend over backwards to build it, it'll only ever be as good as the tribe. Though I have been debating on an alternative build where instead of spiders I could just run a bunch of voltron and fight pieces and just have Shelob devouring people. Notably, you can have Shelob devouring your own guys to set up infinites. Eat Devoted Druid with Shelob and suddenly you get an infinite mana producing food.
I believe Sauron, Lidless Eye is very powerful. To be able to pump his ability dealing damage is exactly what red wants to do and there's plenty of support in rakdos to dump mana into it. For 5 cmc, he isn't a quick commander, but, you have all the time you need to setup your infinite mana before he comes out and drains the table.
Right?! And the flavor is so good. Turning creatures into food to use later. Also, Bill the Pony s my son and I'm building the most powerful deck I possibly can around him.
The language is that of corporate, which I dare not utter here. But, in the common tongue, it says "One site to buy them all. One site to find them. One site to ship them all, and in one package bind them."
Sauron is a great example of a commander that's in my colors, has great lore, is good for so many different playstyles, and I will likely never play simply because I will be too busy theory crafting to actually put it together.

@@niceguyproductions6527 I'm not 100% on this either but they mentioned chromatic star doubling the card draw when entering the graveyard and it is worded the same as ichor wellspring
@@niceguyproductions6527 When something is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, is has left the battlefield. Dying, being exiled (from the battlefield), and being returned to hand (from the battlefield) will all trigger leave the battlefield abilities.
@@niceguyproductions6527 Yes those two phrases have different meanings, hence why I specified other scenarios that also were leaving the battlefield. If it isn't, then it has left the battlefield, regardless of what zone it is currently in (graveyard, hand, or exile) or how it got there. What effect in magic explicitly says "target thing leaves the battlefield"?
I would pick Eowyn, Shieldmaiden over Eowyn, Fearless Knight, but I get not including precon commanders. Bit redundant to make content meant to inspire building or commander when she is already built as a product.
Cool blink synergy with Aurelia: If you blink her after she gets her attack trigger, she can attack in the second combat and get yet another trigger! And you can do that as many times as you want. (Blinking her makes her enter as an entirely “new” Aurelia with no memory of the first attack trigger)
A couple of great cards for Lord of the Nazgul that weren't mentioned along the lines of Maskwood Nexus are Conspiracy, Arcane Adaptation, and most importantly, Standardize which will trigger the Lord when you cast it. Massacre is another one in the free spell line. I personally think the most robust, fair way to build this deck is with Talrand like creatures paired with Maskwood Nexus type effects.

Another incredible strength of Aragorn is just by putting him on the table you can learn exactly what people at your LGS you don’t want to play with. That’s true power we haven’t seen yet.
There are plenty of cards that will let you know who at your LGS you don’t want to play with, just for different reasons… … like a Dockside Extortionist where you create X treasures and get to listen to a sermon on why it should be banned for X minutes.
Keep in mind that if you exile a white creature with Eowyn, she gains protection from white until end of turn, and you won't be able to blink her with a white card. Eldrazi Displacer is still fine, since it has Devoid.
I love to add cards that pull/play back from the graveyard with my Tom Bombadil deck. I call it the Never Ending Story Deck. Cards like Muldrotha, spirit-sisters calling, or hanna ship navigator work so well.
very nice episode! just a small correction re: saruman of many colors. its equal or lesser mana value (not just lesser) and can’t be artifact (no bolas citadel that was shown). but wow thanks for explaining how ability works - read it a few times and didn’t quite get it until watching this episode.
I've been brewing a Sauron deck for a while now and I love it. It's a wheel and reanimate deck with tons of flashback and escape, and either laboratory maniac or an underworld breach combo as win cons. I love decks that, as my friends say, are measured in turns per turn, meaning I can draw cards and get mana in loops, which this deck can do really well with bone miser and badgersaur.
Interesting note on Gandalf, you just have to control the permanent with the trigger. If an opponent's legendary or artifact entering or leaving the battlefield triggers your stuff, that also triggers twice. Soul Sister or blood artist triggering twice on your opponent's commander entering or such. A little awkward to build around but still.
WIll the wise + Gandalf the grey is insane. playing and sacrificing will with gandalf out just once, before any recursion/reanimation, at a 4 player table, makes a maximum of ***16*** clues, and a minimum of 4 clues, while making each opponent lose 4. now imagine theres also a othelm on the field, or a saffi eriksdotter
at some point I will build most of these. But for now i have Monoblue Gandalf built, to cast Rivers Rebuke at instant speed and to cast extra turn spells willy-nilly :)
Saurman the white hand = fling tribal. So you build it like a storm deck, make your orc army massive, cast a fling spell, throw it in the face of your opponent, then make 2 copies of fling and target the other 2 and kill everyone. I hate that I like so many of these commanders! Because wasn't gonna buy any of the cards, because reasons. But now I am considering it, maybe make 2 evil commanders and 2 good commanders and have them battle it out in 2 headed giant? Sounds very fun to me.
That's one way to optimise it, but I will also theorycraft the "my little Tamagotchi" version of the deck, giving the orcs all the love and voltroning with big pump spells and equipments :D (Obviously, you don't fling a Tamagotchi, poor thing)
1:02:13 My deck has no wincons! *Cackles maniacally* I died 🤣 1:22:00 I cracked Black Market Connections by placing in a deck with Najeela, Blade-blossom. It makes warriors, so a full send in that deck is so worth it.
Blade of selves for the Lord of the Nazgul deck. You're running 9 Nazgul, if you have just one on the battlefield giving it myriad will tempt you twice and give the original, both token copies, your flying commander, and any other wraith or changeling you have 6 +1/+1 counters. Bonus points for having the Argonath/Ozolith to capture at minimum 12 +1/+1 counters every time you swing with the myriad nazgul and then putting them on your commander next turn, making it a 22/21 with flying. Taurean Mauler is pretty good with Saruman the White Hand, changeling means it's an army for your amass triggers and it gets a +1/+1 counter for every spell your opponents cast as well.
saruman will love first spells like Cabal ritual, dark ritual, frantic search, mission briefing or rewind/unwind followed by big bounce spells like evacuation, cyclonic rift, aetherize or aetherspouts on your opponents turns and follow ups on your turn after that with windfall, dark deal or whispering madness. the new card fomr tales of middle earth prees the enemy will also be great fit in the deck
I’m thinking of running Aragorn in a sorta mid level stax situation where I run the multicolored control spells you might not have access in in decks with less colors. Lots of tax cards and and multicolor control/burn that will trigger multiple abilities on Aragorn every time. I can run fewer creatures and load up on multicolor spells that hit the white trigger and another color. I need to get my hands on some multi colored lands for the mana base but it should be quite irritating to go up against at least for my purposes
I built an Eomer, King of Rohan deck quite similar to the Eowyn deck you talked about. Except it's a direct commander damage deck. Feather would be a great include though - I didn't think of that. Obviously it also, more Human spells.
I've built myself a saruman the white hand last night, I've put Irenicus from Baldur to give my armies to other players goaded +2+2 and giving me draw cards when they attack... I'm a weapon merchant XD. I also put Myra and Magar from Ufinity in it.... for extra sauce.
Aragon, the Uniter also has access to food chain and all the same shenanigans of Rocco while also being in blue to play good counter magic. Aragon becomes a win con in the command zone easily with all kinds of crazy combo lines. Don't think it's really good enough for cEDH, but the deck has legs to stand on for sure.
I instantly built the witch-king and have has such a blast playing voltron, using the initiative and monarch, and use many ways to tell your opponents that attacking you will cost dearly. Madness cards are great too.
Mentioned a lot of the ones I believe in. Currently building denethor- his cost 2 to sac a body for +1 LP and -1 to opp. LP But seeing that Balrog combo sounds filthy 🤯
If you target a thing with ward with a spell that can't be countered you may still choose to pay the ward cost. Nothing will happen but in the case of Saruman it could come in handy if you want to trigger madness or some other discard effect. Edit: "The White Hand" is after "of Many Colors"
- LOL At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Dockside Extortionist in between a PBJ Sandwich is an infinite combo that could cure world hunger. - Bruse Tarl is like the Boros version of Zangief - I think Frodo Saurons Bane is my favorite new commander, there is so much stuff that tempts you like putting 9 Nazgul in a deck with some Blink effects :P
@@alexlarocca3065 I'd recommend Slip on the Ring, Ephemerate, Cloudshift, Flicker of Fate, Justicar Portal, Momentary Blink; all of these spells are below 2cmc so you can use Isochron Sceptre to get recurring Blink/Flicker effects. There are also creatures that do the same effect you mainly want the text line'' Exile creature, return to play''. You do not want cards that will return the card at endstep as you will miss your Frodo combat damage trigger.
I think u guys judge wrong the ETB effect of Eówyn, Fearless Knight. The ETB says Greater power and dont refeer to Éowyn’s power as a condition. Is just the greater power between creatures the opponent control. I have the Portuguese version of the card and the text says “exile target creature between the greattest power a opponent controls”
Wizards should really do something about the wording regarding moving "those/it's counters." In this case, reading the card does not explain the card.. never would have known it could double the trigger, thanks for the data!
You can also put in Djeru and Hazoret into the Eowyn deck. Also sundial of the infinite just gives all creatures forever protection since it's an end of turn effect.
I actually have a with Aragorn, the Uniter as the commander. It’s a 4 color do almost all mechanics from the set deck. A lot of tempting by the ring, The One Ring is in it. It’s entirely built out of LOTR Cards and serves no other purpose than me being a huge LOTR nerd.
I'm building an aragorn heros deck . My first vorthos deck that's just focused on casting multi colored heroes , getting the band together and seeing what happens lol . But all cards and their art have to give off a good vibe
only major complaint I have with the set is that Glorfindel is not a mythic rare powerhouse. The dude is one of the most powerful beings active on middle earth at the time of LotR being comparable to the other strongest only really falling behind Sauron, Gandalf the White, and Tom Bombadil. Amusingly he is almost certianly stronger than any other of the Maia active currently as he killed a Balrog in the distant past and after getting resurrected/reincarnated is significantly stronger now.
I hope when they do a LOTR Game Knights, they either play the precons out of the box or make their own commander decks but only use the cards from the set (commander reprints included). That’s what I’m doing once I get my hands on the set.
I dont think modular will work with Gandalf the way you want. Module takes the +1/+1 counters on the modular creature to put them on another, but the 2nd time this goes to resolve it wont have any counters on it anymore? Judge.....?
How did you guys not include Galadrie, Light of Valinor?! she's arguably even better than Galadriel of Lothlorien, and even better is if you have both on the board at once, such a great scrying, drawing, ramping combo. Would have loved to see what else you would put in that deck though.
The arcane bombardment reading was wrong, it’s exile a instant or sorcery at random from your graveyard not the one that you cast. Small but important detail! Great izzet cards regardless!
Do you guys have a list of all the cards you’re talking about? I’d like to try out that Sauron deck build, thank you for sharing and doing what you do ❤
I didn't go aristocrats with Sauron. I 100% made Sauron into a pseudo-wraith tribal with heavy graveyard shenanigans. I just mill myself with the ring temptations, reanimate all my nazguls, subsequently making them huge. Adding in Sauron the necromancer makes reanimating nazguls easier, then summoning Sauron the lord of the rings is icing on the cake. Bonus points if my nazguls and any other creatures are reanimated by Sauron the necromancer because then their become wraiths with base power and toughness 3/3 PLUS all the counters they generate on each other. It's pretty dirty.
In the example section of Sarumon you mention casting an opponents bolas citadel from the grave when you actually cant do that because its an artifact.
Sméagol helpful guide i made a commander deck out of it and it is awesome sack your creatures make a lot of tokens and mill your opponents and take there lands

NILS!!! Nils in Eowyn is really cool.
saruman will love first spells like Cabal ritual, dark ritual, frantic search, mission briefing or rewind/unwind followed by big bounce spells like evacuation, cyclonic rift, aetherize or aetherspouts on your opponents turns and follow ups on your turn after that with windfall, dark deal or whispering madness. the new card fomr tales of middle earth prees the enemy will also be great fit in the deck
In Sarumen the white hand you could use Magnus the red since there will be a lot of tokens and the spell cost reduction will be insane
I've built myself a saruman the white hand last night, I've put Irenicus from Baldur to give my armies to other players goaded +2+2 and giving me draw cards when they attack... I'm a weapon merchant XD. I also put Myra and Magar from Ufinity in it.... for extra sauce.
The first time I saw The Witch King of Angmar as a card, I was tempted to make him a commander deck. Looks like alot of fun
I get it "tempted" 😅
"Turn that pod into a polycule" totally killed me on the spot XD
I built Saruman of Many Colors with the Urza block land untappers and also evoke cards. They all seem like nice value
Sound sick! You got a decklist??
Je veux la liste aussi silye😮
I’m going to be making Aragorn the uniter multicolored cascade
Lord of the Nazgul could be a good counterspell deck commander
Ah the players who do nothing but use counterspells and quit the game when anything they cant stop actually resolves
@@mibbzx1493 playing counterspells with this guy can get you a board of 9/9s with menace
Mentioned a lot of the ones I believe in. Currently building denethor- his cost 2 to sac a body for +1 LP and -1 to opp. LP
But seeing that Balrog combo sounds filthy 🤯
If you target a thing with ward with a spell that can't be countered you may still choose to pay the ward cost. Nothing will happen but in the case of Saruman it could come in handy if you want to trigger madness or some other discard effect.
Edit: "The White Hand" is after "of Many Colors"
there is another scry land in the lotr set, colorless tap or add one colored mana of any legendary creature in your graveyard
- LOL At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Dockside Extortionist in between a PBJ Sandwich is an infinite combo that could cure world hunger.
- Bruse Tarl is like the Boros version of Zangief
- I think Frodo Saurons Bane is my favorite new commander, there is so much stuff that tempts you like putting 9 Nazgul in a deck with some Blink effects :P
What blink effects would you use? I’m building the deck and new to the game so I would appreciate any advice
I've been running 5C Sagas for months with Go-Shintai at the helm. I proxied up Tom Bombadil when he was spoiled and the deck has been much better
Wizards should really do something about the wording regarding moving "those/it's counters." In this case, reading the card does not explain the card.. never would have known it could double the trigger, thanks for the data!
Respecfully, I think you guys missed Gollum, Scheming Guide, clearly the strongest card printed since grizzly bears
I built the 2 color scry Elrond where he puts counters on stuff after you scry.
Aragorn Charms sounds so fun
Nahiri’s Resolve for Eowyn, Fearless Knight! protection, blink, pump, and haste all in one!
WOW 2 and a half hours!? HAPPY MONDAY. God Bless your editor
only major complaint I have with the set is that Glorfindel is not a mythic rare powerhouse.
Judge.....?
1:45:22 forget about the one ring, Sauroman carrying that sword of body and mind real well. Lol.
How did you guys not include Galadrie, Light of Valinor?! she's arguably even better than Galadriel of Lothlorien, and even better is if you have both on the board at once, such a great scrying, drawing, ramping combo. Would have loved to see what else you would put in that deck though.
If you combine Galadriel with the Druid Class Enchantment Card, I really believe you could come up with a nice land/life combo
The arcane bombardment reading was wrong, it’s exile a instant or sorcery at random from your graveyard not the one that you cast. Small but important detail! Great izzet cards regardless!
Do you guys have a list of all the cards you’re talking about? I’d like to try out that Sauron deck build, thank you for sharing and doing what you do ❤
I realize this is not not obvious but I just love the intro to the Command Zone videos. Too bad there's no Sol Ring emoji
In the example section of Sarumon you mention casting an opponents bolas citadel from the grave when you actually cant do that because its an artifact.
yup, Eowyn is going straight into my Cadric deck :D
I am going for another Aragorn, King of Gonder. Could be a real sweet Monarch Deck and im really looking forward to play it!
Army-Tron is a fun idea! I ought to try!
You cannot cast Bolas of Citadel using Saruman of many color's ability, it is an artifact. Just something I noticed while they were covering him.
Gonna be building Sauron. I love the BBEG bit and I want the villain to win once in a while. Might sprinkle in a Maskwood Nexus.
would you guys be willing to build these decks on archidekt? Would be interested to see a full build out of Sauron for example.
Eowyn is going in my Dihada deck! Chefs kiss
Aragon is kinda nutty especially in 60 card giant growth becomes 1 mana +7/+7. If you play dreadhorn arcanist it's a pretty quick win
Feeling validated for making Sauron aristocrats, I see next to no builds for him that way so it’s nice to know I’m going the right route lol
As tu ta deckliste s'il-te-plaît ? Et ton deck est niveaux combien stp
I so badly want to go onto the mtg wiki and mark the new reprint of Harmonize as strictly better for the fact that it distracts your opponents.
I might be OCD - but anyway you could show a commander deck that's all LOTR? How is gandalf meant to work with other cards from the same set?
I know its not technically Commander, but in Historic Brawl on Arena the 4 color Aragorn is absolutely broken and needs to be put in the hell queue
Jamie has, what we 'in the biz' (in the old daze) called a 'radio voice'. More of him, he knows his shit. Rachel too. Great pair.
Far Traveler Background let’s your commander blink a tapped creature you control at the begging of your end step. Great for Eowyn.
I think frodo, sauron's bane with ring tempting will be a sort of unique and powerful voltron? Kind of? It seems fast and dirty.
Waffling between building Sauron the Dark Lord and Sauron the Lord of the Rings as my commander big bad evil deck.
Rachel trying to get me to search c=3 on the internet. not falling for that one today. good try command zone
I really enjoyed this video! Thanks Team Command Zone! 🎉
hahaha.. "ring bearer = a boy with a pillow" killed me.. 😂🤣
Question for the comments and content creator;s. Could you use Thousand year Storm, with Saruman, the white hand?
Sméagol helpful guide i made a commander deck out of it and it is awesome sack your creatures make a lot of tokens and mill your opponents and take there lands
