When I watch young people watch music like this I realize how fortunate I was to be born in 1960 and to have grown up during the 60's and 70's. By the time I was 18, I'd heard some of the best music ever written simply by turning on my radio. I actually can't remember the first time I heard Nights in White Satin and so its imbedded in my soul as something that has always existed, much like songs like Stairway to Heaven and so much more. How lucky my generation was. And at the time, we took it all for granted.
The look you had when the song started said it all. And you were intently watching this all the way through. You definitely know good music when you hear it.
One of the great rock songs ever written. We were stunned by its beauty when it first came out. There is a part missing from this version, so you need to listen to the studio version to hear the whole thing.
My girlfriend gave me the album as a gift when it came out, and I did not know who they were, so I did not play the album. 3 Years later, I finally opened that album and listened to it. I was completely blown away, and have been a Moody since 1972. Their music comforted me during my time in the service and Vietnam. Yeah, they are great! Hope you listen to the full version on the album. You will not be disappointed.
I buried my brother today... And tonight you brought this song back to me. I can't stop crying, but I have to thank you JB. "Because I love you!!!" Such a primal scream. 💕
This is one of those songs where even when you try, you can't imagine it being any other way ... no other possible melody, no other possible arrangement, no other possible instrumentals ... it's just as perfect as a song can get.
It’s such a pleasure watching you discover the music I’ve loved all my life. Your reactions are priceless. You make me remember when I first heard this… and how I fell hopelessly in love with it that day.🐝🤗❤️
The Moody Blues live up to their name thru all their music taking you along for the ride in an emotional roller coaster of the highs and lows of their musical journey!
This whole album is amazing! The Moody Blues tells some very interesting stories with some amazing music! I've loved them for half a century now lol. Try "The Story in Your Eyes" (full version! There's some powerful poetry in the prologue!)
The proper listen is “Procession/Story in your Eyes”. MBs are a concept album band - one of the most musical and enduring- nicknamed The Veteran Cosmic Rockers.
This song is one of the best ever made in history, as it brought back great memories from my childhood. Thank You for sharing your thoughts and reaction to this beautiful musical masterpiece by the Moody Blues. XO
That look on your face is priceless. It's so great to see young people like you enjoying the music we grew up on. I can tell you are in awe of this music
I think I've heard this almost every day since it first came out and it still gives me chills every time I hear it! You said it, this is real music! FABULOUS reaction!
The Moody Blues is a group of the most talented gifted musicians ever assembled!! I saw them back in the mid seventies and was forever blown away with what I experienced!
Moody Blues were considered psychedelic rock back in my day. Justin Hayward's voice has more power with age and this sounds even better than their first release in 1967. Sadly the flutist Ray Thomas passed away in 2018 at the age of 76 and Co Founder and Drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021 at the age of 80. lead singer Justin Hayward is 75. Great reaction as always...
I had forgotten Graeme had passed away. It's amazing that Justin is 75. He doesn't look it. And yes, his voice (like the recently passed Gary Booker) improved with age. There is more richness and depth in it.
I loved watching your reaction. Your face was filled with wonder! The Moody Blues are a classic rock band. My favorite song by them is "The Story In Your Eyes" ✌️🎶
Listen to the extended studio version. There's a poetry section (starts out "Breathe deep the gathering gloom..."), and then there's a little something extra added to the big finish. On RUclips this version is called "The Night".
Too much beauty in one song. I had the privilege of seeing them with a full orchestra many years ago. This video brings it all back. Love it, love it. Just beautiful. Your reaction is spot on. That’s The Moody Blues.
When I saw the start of the video, I noticed this was a live version, not the studio cut and I thought it might not be so good, but MAN, they brought their A-game!!! And the sound is phenomenal on the headphones I am listening on. The bass is really driving and melodic - perfect. I am not surprised how moved you were.
Great Reaction......and GREAT Recognition of Great Music. They've been performing this song for 50 years and it STILL Brings Chills. Rock and Roll HOF band performs with class and as you saw, appreciated by classy people like yourself.
My introduction to them was when my sister gave me their album Seventh Sojourn for a birthday gift. I had the pleasure of attending one of their concerts when I was stationed in Hawaii in 1974. The concert hall had great acoustics and that flute sounded great from anywhere in the place. At the end of the first song they did the flute player suddenly noticed that there were people up behind the stage in the balcony. For the rest of the concert he faced that balcony which is were me and my date were seated. That poetry really gets to me now when he says "senior citizens wish they where young"'. I am mow 70. They had some great albums, Seventh Sojourn, Days of Future Past, To Our Children's Children's Children, Every Good Boy Deserves Favor.
@@marktrail8624 Quite a few of us bought it when it first came out in 67, I got mine in 68. The album went to #2 on the charts in 1972 with sales of over 1 million, and was the second time it had charted in the US and the UK. I know a lot of friends in the military bought it, as you could hear it playing in the dorms in 69 and 70.
I first heard this song with my aunt when I was about 5. And I immediately fell in love with the song. I first saw them in concert when I was 30. Just like you said, tears ran down my face at hearing them live. It was just so beautiful how the song went. I'm so glad you heard this song JB. Awesome!!!
What a beautiful memory to have. It's amazing how the soul of a 5-year-old can grasp and be so deeply moved by a work of art, such as a piece of music like Nights in White Satin. People need to stop underestimating the understanding and depth of a child. They are truly capable humans who "get" it. I remember my own childhood moments. In my case, when I first heard "Rhapsody in Blue", I remember how deeply moved I was. It made such a huge impression on me, even though I had the musical knowledge or life experience of a mere child. Our spirits just know!
I've been to 4 Moody Blues concerts. But the best was when they were accompanied by a full orchestra. Even the 95 degree heat couldn't spoil it. Try reviewing their concert at Red Rocks in Colorado.
If you should decide to listen to their whole albums you will discover that they were perhaps the first rock band to use orchestral arrangements and spoken poetry in their music and sound. Their debut album in 1967 (this tune is on it), "Days of Future Passed" is legendary and meant to be listened to as a whole concept album experience about a single day from morning until night.
@@randy8297 You are probably right, I vaguely recall it didn't sell, but I read somewhere that they recorded the hit , "Go Now" with Denny Laine as the lead singer of The Moody Blues and no album for it. Laine left or was fired just before Justin Hayward joined and they made "Days". Laine about a decade later would join Paul McCartney and Wings.
I am seriously addicted to this song, hardcore. My late husband took me to see them on Mud Island in Memphis, small venue, very intimate and so nice and beautiful. It was a midsummer night I will never forget as long as I live.
I so appreciate your reaction. You’re just lost in the moment. It feels so genuine. Hauntingly beautiful is the only way to describe this song. It was originally recorded in the late 60’s. Imagine that. No doubt, it ages well. So beautiful
Beautiful yes? "Just what you want to be, you will be in the end." I lift up my arms and visualize sending waves of love accross the world with the chorus and when I need it I imagine the waves coming back to me. Lately I've needed it. Love never dies. 🎵☮️💜🤘
J, your little intake of breath just a few seconds in said it all. The flute, the wails, the gorgeous crescendos...interspersed with those soft instrumental interludes that can lull you to sleep. It's one of the most beautiful mixes of rock and orchestra ever.
JB I'm glad to have found your channel 2 years ago. Your appreciation, your reactions are wonderful to see. You seem a kind and decent human being. The 1st reaction i saw was your Pavarotti Nessun Dorma, that one really effected me. I have shared that reaction with many friends and they were as moved as I was. Thanks for your channel.
JAMES! You are the perfect person to react to this song! Your musical and emotional sensibilities are so refined and attuned to fully register the depth of this great music. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you!

I first heard this when I was 15 (I'm 70 now) and have travelled along the Moodies highway for all my life. I just wish I could hear it for the first time again. But then, having heard it over a thousand times it still gives me goosebumps. Also, I understand your reaction......beautiful music isn't it?
At the end here the drummer recites a poem while the orchestra provides back ground music that even at 19 years old I found thought provoking: " Breath deep the gathering gloom, watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people sit back and lament, another days useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, lonely man cry out for love but has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, senior citizens wish they were young! Cold hearted orb, that rules the night, removes the colors from our sight, red is gray and yellow white, bur WE decide which is right, and which is an illusion." That was powerful stuff back in 1968! A lot of hits came off of that album!
Moody Blues was of my teen years . Such an amazing talent. Justin Haywards vocals emit goosebumps .. especially this song. Late 60 and the 70s were the era of music that was stellar. Mind boggling stuff. I am stuck in this era to this day.( 63 yrs old music lover)
I'm so humbled & grateful that I grew up during the very best generation of music! I'm so very happy to see your generation is finally discovering and enjoying it.
"Breathe deep the gathering gloom..." Back in the early 1970s I would burrow deep under the bed covers late at night, holding my mono radio very close to my ear so as not to wake my younger brother or anyone else in the house, and wait for the local rock station to play this song, wondering how any piece of music could be so magical and mysterious. You really do need to hear the complete studio version, with the poetic reading at the end, which starts with the line in quotations above. But more importantly, please don't ever lose the honesty and wonder of your reactions, JB...to both music and life.
This song was released in 1967. They are much older here but they still sound great. I couldn't understand why I don't like Rap. After listening to this I got my answer.
@Russell White I don't know what my problem is. I like all kinds of music from Mozart to Johnny Cash and everything in between. I've tried listening to different rappers and songs and it just doesn't do anything for me.
@@patswanson2870 Same for me. Rap brings no emotion to me whatsoever, and it's not anything that sticks in my head throughout the day. For me it's someone talking fast to a beat, usually electronic. I am sorry too, but I just don't get it.
so i commented before i listened and now after seeing your reaction, there is a lot to say. even after listening to the Moodies everyday since 1968, many of their songs still can bring a tear to my eyes. 16 studio albums, numerous solo albums and 7 concept albums in a row, the Moodies were considered the worlds smallest orchestra with the 5 of them playing up to 33 instruments on an album. many of their great songs have a Prelude song to them so the first seven albums should be played in full with headphones and a dark room. i enjoyed your reaction and have subscribed
My uncle turned me on to The Moody Blues a little over 20 years ago. Even to this day, when this song plays and Justin and the guys harmonize, I get chills. This song is hauntingly beautiful. Great reaction.
I always saw The Moody Blues as a real class act, poetry in motion and two steps ahead of a lot of groups of the 60 & 70’s era!!!!! Glad your enjoying it, keeping their music alive!!!
Such a beautiful melody and played SO WELL....lucky to see them a couple times....one time front row. Blew me away! Can't wait until the ending part with the orchestral really kicks in!
OMG!! This was the very first album by the Moody Blues & that was 50 years ago. It warms my heart & soul to see you enjoying songs and your video reaction. I can't believe I still remember all the words!!
I love your reaction to this song, the look of joy and anticipation on you face was fantastic. Another classic that you need to react to is A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum, also brilliant.
Found your channel yesterday and can't quit watching. Loved your reaction to this song. I am 65 and I get the same reaction every time I hear this song. Also subscribed today can't wait to watch all your video's.
I used to play Moody Blues quite often on my days off. The first day was always cleaning and stripping the beds. Me and the kids would be singing on the top of our lungs as we cruised through the house, often stopping to perform air guitar or flute! Haha! That was many years ago. Great to see you react to them. It warms my heart that they had such an impact upon you.
Some truly awesome music from the mid-to-late 1960s...in the space of about 12-months, we got this epic song, "Sergeant Pepper" from The Beatles, "Pet Sounds" from the Beach Boys, and "Whiter Shade of Pale" from Procul Harum, just to name a few. Your reactions always bring me back to the time when I first heard this music. As you say, this is "real music," not some electronically-massaged dreck. Excellent review, as always!
I've been a rock drummer for over 40 years, but the one thing you should put on your bucket list is to see a live philharmonic orchestra. It will move you emotionally like no other music concert.

I saw them twice in concert...just as awesome as recording. Great orchestration and special effects. Still one of my favorite groups. 🥰
VERY well said
@Russell White I don't know what my problem is.
Yours is my favorite reaction to this song. I cried when I heard them in concert and still get misty eyed when I hear it. Ahhh 🎉. I sooths my heart
Such a beautiful melody and played SO WELL....lucky to see them a couple times....one time front row. Blew me away! Can't wait until the ending part with the orchestral really kicks in!
The smile that broke out on your face when the singing started is everything to me
OMG!! This was the very first album by the Moody Blues & that was 50 years ago. It warms my heart & soul to see you enjoying songs and your video reaction. I can't believe I still remember all the words!!
Welcome to the generation that experienced this first class music first hand and we encourage you to follow the path, you padawan!
I love your reaction to this song, the look of joy and anticipation on you face was fantastic. Another classic that you need to react to is A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum, also brilliant.
Showing off how GORGEOUS the blending of rock and symphonic music. They are the pioneers.
And yes, I still tear up listening to this song and I’m in my 60’s, all these years later, the beauty of”real music” 😎😎
Amazing band, love ur reaction. They're up there with Yes & Pink Floyd as far as intricate compositions. ♥️💯😎
We were totally spoiled with bands like this. I’ve seen them in concert tower theater upper Darby Pennsylvania. Truly lucky to see moody blues 😊
I’m so excited to watch your station. Your wonder and amazement is infectious. Peace my friend.
I think I love your reaction to this more than any I've ever seen to any piece...... You get it! You belong to the beauty.....
"hold fast to what is fine"!!!
I've been a rock drummer for over 40 years, but the one thing you should put on your bucket list is to see a live philharmonic orchestra. It will move you emotionally like no other music concert.
Excellent reaction. "This is real music" hits the nail on the head.
Hi, James! Nice to see a young person listening to this superb music.☺Blessings! 💜
64 yo guy here and have loved the band since the 60's Had all their albums
You happen to have chosen my favorite song of all time. 💜💜💜💜💜
