This is my first time ever hearing @MoodyBluesToday and their song "Nights in White Satin." This was such as well written song with an accompanying orchestra that killed it! The lead singer had a great vocal performance and the rest of the band was spot on. The album was Days Of Future Past. It was a concept album meant to be listened to from beginning to end. It follows 24 hours, this being Night. Tuesday Afternoon is another favorite track from this album. I’ve loved this song, and band, since it was released.

to ensure that you listened all the way through, the record was produced with NO pause between tracks and the orchestra moved from one to the other totally seamlessly.
Have loved the moodys since the late 60s. its STILL in my playlist.
second the motion that you listen to the original album to get the full effect, later re-releases were not as good cos it ended.lol

Lead singer, Justin Hayward is still touring and singing live. All be it, not with an orchestra. But his voice, at 76 years old, is still as compelling and as beautiful as ever!! I was blessed to have seen him live in 2022.
So awesome! Still going strong at that age, he’s committed!

Moody Blues were a British explosion group. The 1st song was Go Now. That was in 65. Their music is wonderful. Check out Question, Tuesday Afternoon, Ride my SeeSaw and many more.

The orchestra was a several years period during the mid to late 90s.
The original "full" version had a poem, called the Lament at the end too.
Justin was on the soundtrack of Geoff Wayne's musical War of the World's along with "Thin Lizzy" singer guitarist Phil Lynott, among others.

💙the Moody Blues’ Rabbit Hole is very deep and melodic, my friend. All 5 wrote some of the most mesmerizing songs and poems. I’d start you down with Procession/The Story in Your Eyes from 1970. Such a seminal year for prog rock. MBs are all the weed I need!💙
Also in my collection, because of the Moodys! And the "cherry on top", the story is narrated by Sir Richard Burton!
The Moody Blues did live performances with and without orchestration. They used local orchestras from cities and venues wherever they performed. This particular show was done in London in 2001. a culmination of about a 10 year tour using local orchestras as the soundtrack of the show. I was priviledged to see them do this program 2 times live. I heard many comments following one show as to being the best concert peerformance ever. I know I felt it too, until I heard them at the next show and expressed the same feeling. Absolutely fabulous. You need to hear "Isn't Life Strange" and "Legend of a Mind" from the same show.

The Moodies would play with symphony orchestras about half the time. This was the Colorado Symphony at Red Rocks a PBS special the Moodies did. These guys are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a group you should really explore. Had a bunch of hits and were really original. Justin Hayward is the lead singer. The flute player and drummer have passed away….

I was fortunate enough to attend a concert with them, accompanied by the symphony orchestra in Portland, Maine. I was so impressed that they could perform with just a couple rehearsals before the show that night. Of course the orchestra practiced a lot before the band got there, but I don’t know how soon the band arrived. I think they just came in on the day of. It was a great show, and I’m glad I got to see it!
They are known for using an orchestra, but I've seen them twice in concert, with no orchestra. And they are just as great! They are great, and I own all their albums. This one, Days of the Future Past, is my favorite. :)

The album "Days Of Future Past" was the first with the orchestra (It was about one day, with songs like "Tuesday Afternoon". The were the first band to use "The Mellotron Stynthesizer" for orchestration.

This song was on an album of the same name put out in 1967. This group was my favorite band back then ( I have ALL their albums) As originally done, the orchestra was played on a mellotron by Mike Pinder, the lead singer and guitar is Justin Hayward, the bass player and backing vocals, is John lodge, the flute and backing vocals Ray Thomas, and the drummer is Graeme Edge. That Orchestral sound is what drew me to them back in the day. This was a concept album, of sorts, and the song was a big hit back then, but the British Invasion was well under way, and their music was, dare I say, a little too sophisticated for the AM Rock stations.

Go down this rabbit hole. My GO-TO playlist is called Moody Beatles. Moody Blue and Beatles are the best. This band used to have a key boardist named Mike Pinder, who did all the orchestra sounds on a melatron. They finally let Mike Pinder go, do they need an entire orchestra to tak his place.
No.... Pinder was a founding member of the band and well-liked. He chose to leave. Definitely not fired. He met a girl from CA and chose that relationship over touring.

While the Mellotron was in all the performances it replaced the orchestra on the studio single release. But on the album it combined with a full orchestra. Justin wrote it in a single day. The orchestra was a fluke. The production company had already hired the orchestra for a different project that fell through. Then decided to take a huge risk with Days Of Future Past. Fortunately it was a big success. The title an inspiration for Nights is from Justin's girl frend had just broken up with him. As a parting gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. Do yourself a favor listen to the full album in one sitting. It is a trip you won't forget.

I've been to about 40 concerts since 1974 and consider the Moody Blues concert in 2001 at the small venue maybe 2000 seat Paul Mason Winery To be absolutely the best of them all. Just the main band members and there was so much magic in the air. Everyone in the Audience sang every word to every song with them. An 80 year old man to my left and a teenager to my wife's right sang. Showing that their music crosses generations. Ushers dancing in the aisles. MAGIC ! I still have the jersey in my closet (not a tee shirt) I've been to 4 of their concerts. 2 with the full orchestra and 2 without.

the Mighty Moodies! 16 studio albums of which the first 7 are all considered concept albums. this is best live version, studio version has the spoken word in it. these guys have many musical firsts, their songs have been done by groups from hip hop to bluegrass and were considered the smallest orchestra in the world with the 5 of them playing up to 33 instruments on a single album. when the Beatles broke up, these guys were the #1 group in the world plus so much more......they did a whole tour playing with orchestras all over the world but not the normal concerts with just the group. GREAT REACTION!

This is a wonderful recording of a concert in their later days. I guess aging required and extra drummer. In mid-seventies Jeff Wayne wrote and produced the wonderful album War of the Worlds (based on the novel by H.G. Wells), and he convinced Justin Hayward to sing on a few songs. I think the song Forever Autumn is exquisitely beautiful, was happy to see War of the Worlds performed live a few decades ago in Amsterdam, with Justin Hayward singing that song. I think you would also love the song I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band by the Moody Blues, shows the power of their drums and bass.
Nights is from 67 is the climax of the album Days Of Future Past. Prior to the album the group used a mellotron which gave them an orchestral feel. As it happened the production company Had hired an orchestra for another project that fell through. Someone said well we have spent the money why not use the to bolster this album. It was a rsk that worked. Justin the lead singer wrote this song in 1 day. he was 19 then. His girl frend at the time had just broken up with him. As a parting gift of a set of white satin sheets hence the title. The single studio release is the only performance of Nights without an orchestra. the album is a trip and a half do yourself a favor and listen to the entire album. The ask is it a day or a life.

I think it’s for a single performance.. the beginning of this version reminds me of Willie Wonka. 😂
But next you should check out Robert Smith’s (of The Cure) collab with the band CHVRCHES called “How Not to Drown”. It’s absolutely amazing blending modern alt/pop with the 80s synth feel of The Cure.

The reason I love them is that they are not in a box. They do R&B, Rock, Classical and more. Now onward of things I remember about them. I did however have to look up all the record hits etc. cause there are a lot of them and different ones. I hope you enjoy them more on your channel.

The Moody Blues was probably the first Prog-Rock band, with a sound that no one else has duplicated. Their music has passed the test of time. Justin, the one singer, wrote this song at age 19. They use an orchestra on their Huge Concerts, and when not, they use synthesizers, to duplicate the sound of the mellotron in their first album in 1968, which duplicated the orchestra.
I throughly enjoyed this video! Can’t wait to hear more from them! That’s a testament that it has stood the test of time!
Another thing that I have not seen mentioned in the comments yet, is that a lot of the songs on their earlier albums, flow from one song directly into the next.
I feel like that’s a lost art! Back then, you wanted the albums to be cohesive cause when you listened you listened all the way through the album. Nowadays, they release so many singles (with streaming), artists don’t always consider the flow of an album. Great point!
This song is a great example of how lyrics can be interpreted in many ways. This isn't really the love song people think it is. Its a song about heartbreak. Its a theme Justin Heyward revisited in the 1980s with the songs "In Your Wildest Dreams" and "I know Your Out There Somewhere". The song is about his girlfriend breaking up with him because music was more important to him and how he questioned whether he made the right choice putting music over her.

Considered one of the pioneers of Progressive Rock, their use of an orchestra in 1967's "Days of Future Passed (NOT 'Past")" album was considered groundbreaking and created a genre called "Art Rock". There were 5 writers and 4 singers. They were inducted in the Rock and Roll HOF in 2018. Two of the surviving members including this lead singer, Justin Hayward, and world-rated bassist John Lodge, still tour.

@@setonhillstudios Hi, I can recommend five for starters, and they are all on one Album "Seventh Sojourn" released in 1972 Songs are 'Lost In a Lost World' 'For My Lady' 'The Land of Make Believe' 'Isn't Life Strange' 'New Horizons' I particularly like the 2nd one & the last two. 'Isn't Life Strange' does get requested on YT - but for some reason it is the Live inferior orchestral-heavy version which is drowning out the vocals & guitar playing - so i would advise RUclipsrs to listen to the 'original version' if you can find it. As to your question why is 'Nights In White Satin' always requested? It beats me - I can only surmise it must be down to a lot of radio air-time after it's 2nd release.
