This is my first time seeing your RUclips page. I just have to point out that I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and I knew this song. Not only was the song fantastically so well rearranged, and not only did this 70 year old man deliver the goods better than 1967, but I saw how it affected your heart! Yes that is the purpose of music, but also the purpose of music is to reveal the heart. Yours was shown in this and I can’t help but feel that God is doing something in you that’s been lost! This is absolutely the finest performance of this masterpiece that has ever been done by Procol Harum. Everything came together perfectly. Gary Brooker was 22 in 1967 when Procol Harum released this masterpiece, and Gary had a good voice then. At 61 in this video, Gary has a great voice. His voice is now silenced, but he will never be forgotten as long as this masterpiece is played and listened to.
He first sang this in 1967, one of my favorite songs. I was born in 1960 and truly believe the music I grew up with in the 60's and 70's is the greatest music ever.

I saw it on your face when you wondered what the lyrics were, and I saw it on your face when you realized that it didn't matter. Moments later the look on your face told me that - for the first time - you were looking through the doors of heaven. When the song came out we knew Procol Harem. We knew that voice. Of course then we didn't have video. But we didn't need it. What you have to understand is that people in my age bracket who grew up loving this song (and so many more) has had it lodged deep in our hearts for a lifetime. This is part of what we are made of. Young people of every and any generation always think that they are the coolest, the smartest the most creative to come down the pike. That's a misconception. In those moments we are all equally cool and smart and creative and young. It was (and IS) the anthem of the 1967 "Summer of Love" generation. I was an emancipated, rebellious teenager. I still have my 45 record from 1967.. I was 18 at the time. Gary Brooker sounds even better 39 years later...Procol Harum was another British group invasion in the 60's.. Gotta love the talent that came from across the pond.
When I was 6, My Favourite Big Brother died when He was 17. Being a silly teenage boy, He snuck out of the house to go to His Friend's house. He played with a gun the police said would never fire, it got Him in the head. He was a protective Big Brother and We were Very Close. One night He was saying "Goodnight!" to Me. The next morning, My waking up is burned into My Memory. I walked into the lounge room and saw everyone crying. So I asked "What is everyone crying about?" They told Me, and My World Fell Apart! I was one of the saddest little girls you ever saw. I'm a singer Myself, but there's one Beatles song I can't sing. "Yesterday" from what I've learned Paul McCartney wrote it while He was grieving for His Mum. I recently watched Him perform "Yesterday" live, and noticed Him crying while He sang. What a professional singing through His tears. I can't do that. Yesterday I had My Favourite Big Brother, the next day He was gone. I'm 43 now but I still have an empty place in My heart for Him.
So true no one really writes classic songs anymore, the sixties was such a rich vein of creativity, I do wonder sometimes it might be due to them all being off their faces on LSD. Some amazing songs written and performed in that era that are hard to ever touch, I always feel like I am an old soul as I adore this era of music, definitely born in the wrong era 70's baby me 🍼👶
Thankfully technology has allowed younger generations to experience the music from our generation. And many of them are very receptive to it. They may think that we're uncool but they know the music we grew up on was the coolest of all.
My Dad had PTSD from Vietnam and spent about ten years going in and out of the mental hospital when I was a kid- then my sister and myself had mental health issues and my sister's children too. (I never had children). PTSD is no joke- my heart goes out to you Sir.
I love your sincere reaction. I suffer from PTSD with anxiety & depression. I’ve been treating myself with music for decades. This particular performance of Whiter Shade of Pale is a religious experience for me. It reaches in and soothes my soul. There should be a shrine at the venue of this performance for people like us to express our love, respect and appreciation. I’ve used this video repeatedly to be a better person. The original is a just such an iconic classic. This live version with a full symphony orchestra is extraordinary. Oh to be there in the crowd to experience this masterpiece.

There's also mention of some earlier arrangements from previous Procul Harum live recordings with other orchestras (notably 1971 with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra) being reused/reworked, so it's possible it was written decades before this concert? Gary Brooker himself appears to have orchestrated several of the songs himself, so he might have done this as well.

I will be 70 this summer and hearing the first notes of Gary Booker's voice still gives me goosebumps. This is one of the few singles to sell over 10 million! I still remember driving the old 1959 green Chevy cranking this AM radio up as soon as this song would start driving though the Dairylands of Wisconsin. As you can see this song is still powerful. God so loved the world he/she gave us music.

That performance is for the ages!! I'm a professional musician since an early age and remember being touched by this song but this Live performance IMHO takes "MUSIC" to another level. The song, Gary Brooker's voice, the accompaniment by such a wonderful Symphony Orchestra, the Choir, the band, the melody played by the organ, the final mix by the recording engineers and Producer(s). It elevates your spirit, it make me think, that we humans are also capable of creating beautiful things that touch your heart and soul. Procol Harum was (and is) a British rock group. When this song was first released in 1967, it didn't come with the full symphony orchestra behind it. The Hammond organ was the main feature of the instrumental track. This live version from their 2006 appearance in Denmark is, by far, the best version of this song. There's just something about the strings that makes you well up in your chest. Real instruments have a way of doing that. There's another song they performed at this concert that's also on RUclips called "Conquistidor." Definitely worth checking it out.

I was graduating from the American School in London just after this song by Procul Harum had come out and for some reason I felt like it was being played during our commencement. It was a song out of London; a song of our days. That's how it felt.

My sis and i she was 17 our mom turned to us and said .Don't cry for me if you could see what i see from this bed you would never cry again it was dec. 1956 2 days from Christmas on Christmas eve she got out of bed helped my sister with the dinner and on Chasms day she was her old self we all had a good day on the 26th she went back to bed and passed away on Jan 2 . Ive seen people pass away in my life but at 77 only my sainted mom was in touch wit GOD AT HER END .

The lyrics are loosely based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the melody is based on Bach's Air on the G String, and the musicianship is top shelf. Gary Booker's voice has aged like a fine Scotch, smooth with a bit of smoky darkness and a clean finish.
It's funny because I've been watching reactions to this song because my aunt just passed away and the very first time I ever heard this song it was her who played it. It's always been one of my favorites. I struggle with the same afflictions and music is one of my few true joys.

James, I am 74 and I have had anxiety and depression for 6 years now and have had a lot of loss in my life recently, going on these music reaction sites helps me take my mind off of things for a little while and provides me some company. I have loved this Procol Harum song since it came out in 1967 and that church organ sound is what makes the song. It sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. THIS arrangement with the orchestra and choir blew me away. You should seek out the original recording from 1967 where the organ is more prominent than it is here, it's Lovely! This is 40 years later, the original studio version will show Gary's younger, cleaner voice, but this one is more emotional.

Thankfully technology has allowed younger generations to experience the music from our generation. And many of them are very receptive to it. They may think that we're uncool but they know the music we grew up on was the coolest of all.

My Dad had PTSD from Vietnam and spent about ten years going in and out of the mental hospital when I was a kid- then my sister and myself had mental health issues and my sister's children too. (I never had children). PTSD is no joke- my heart goes out to you Sir.
I love your sincere reaction. I suffer from PTSD with anxiety & depression. I’ve been treating myself with music for decades. This particular performance of Whiter Shade of Pale is a religious experience for me. It reaches in and soothes my soul. There should be a shrine at the venue of this performance for people like us to express our love, respect and appreciation. I’ve used this video repeatedly to be a better person. It's a pretty interesting read, and I did get through most of it, but the closest reference to this song is "and the wistful minor-key prelude to A Whiter Shade of Pale was penned by Darryl Way (late of Curved Air)". There's also mention of some earlier arrangements from previous Procul Harum live recordings with other orchestras (notably 1971 with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra) being reused/reworked, so it's possible it was written decades before this concert? Gary Brooker himself appears to have orchestrated several of the songs himself, so he might have done this as well.

Procol Harum was a big influence on the Beatles and was known to attend their concerts in the 60s. One of the most powerful songs in music. And this performance might be the best ever rendition/arrangement of the song.

Great to see the effect that this song has on the younger generation who hear it for the first time! This song was a huge hit in the 60s for Procol Harum, and this live version really brings out the glory of the tune.
I will be 70 this summer and hearing the first notes of Gary Booker's voice still gives me goosebumps. This is one of the few singles to sell over 10 million! I still remember driving the old 1959 green Chevy cranking this AM radio up as soon as this song would start driving though the Dairylands of Wisconsin. As you can see this song is still powerful. God so loved the world he/she gave us music.

That performance is for the ages!! I'm a professional musician since an early age and remember being touched by this song but this Live performance IMHO takes "MUSIC" to another level. The song, Gary Brooker's voice, the accompaniment by such a wonderful Symphony Orchestra, the Choir, the band, the melody played by the organ, the final mix by the recording engineers and Producer(s). It elevates your spirit, it make me think, that we humans are also capable of creating beautiful things that touch your heart and soul.

Procol Harum was (and is) a British rock group. When this song was first released in 1967, it didn't come with the full symphony orchestra behind it. The Hammond organ was the main feature of the instrumental track. This live version from their 2006 appearance in Denmark is, by far, the best version of this song. There's just something about the strings that makes you well up in your chest. Real instruments have a way of doing that. There's another song they performed at this concert that's also on RUclips called "Conquistidor." Definitely worth checking it out.

I was graduating from the American School in London just after this song by Procul Harum had come out and for some reason I felt like it was being played during our commencement. It was a song out of London; a song of our days. That's how it felt.

My sis and i she was 17 our mom turned to us and said .Don't cry for me if you could see what i see from this bed you would never cry again it was dec. 1956 2 days from Christmas on Christmas eve she got out of bed helped my sister with the dinner and on Chasms day she was her old self we all had a good day on the 26th she went back to bed and passed away on Jan 2 . Ive seen people pass away in my life but at 77 only my sainted mom was in touch wit GOD AT HER END .

The lyrics are loosely based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the melody is based on Bach's Air on the G String, and the musicianship is top shelf. Gary Booker's voice has aged like a fine Scotch, smooth with a bit of smoky darkness and a clean finish.

James, I am 74 and I have had anxiety and depression for 6 years now and have had a lot of loss in my life recently, going on these music reaction sites helps me take my mind off of things for a little while and provides me some company. I have loved this Procol Harum song since it came out in 1967 and that church organ sound is what makes the song. It sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. THIS arrangement with the orchestra and choir blew me away. You should seek out the original recording from 1967 where the organ is more prominent than it is here, it's Lovely! I am sorry you are going through the same thing.
