- Brian Eslick from How to Automotive www.howtoautomo... show you whats going with a Toyota Prius that has coolant running out of the exhaust system. It's not what you would think being a head gasket.

Excellent advice thank you Brian 👍
@HowtoAutomotive - Please comment: My 2014 Prius with 233,000 miles is experiencing coolant leak.
My car still runs good. No engine shake. I usually drive fast 75-85 mostly Texas intrastate,
The check engine light randomly comes on and then goes off after a while.
Code P0117
The Temp warning light comes on randomly after driving a while then goes off when I slow down.
I don't see any smoke or liquid coming from the tailpipe or leaking anywhere. I do have to add coolant (about a quarter reservoir) about once a week.
Yesterday I had to refill the entire reservoir with coolant after a 2-hour drive driving 80-85, Then next day drove the same 2 hours at 65 and did not lose any coolant.
Took my Prius to Toyota to check it out. They said they could find no leak but, I need to replace my engine and the water pump. They did not tell me why?
To me, it appears to be a leak of coolant into the catalytic converter.

Put cardboard down under your engine after driving it to see if it has a leak. If no visible leak, you can buy a combustion gas checker for $40-ish to see if gasses are getting in your coolant. But I would start thinking about internal leaks if you don't see coolant on the cardboard. The oil may look good, no misfires and it still can be a head gasket failure, cracked block.
@@Pr0ph3cy-k5z - it was the water pump.
@@genemetz1945 Shocked that it wasn't leaking coolant with a bad water pump.
Does a 2015 chevy equinox have the same part?
I have same issue , slow loss of coolant 2017 prius 70k miles ,
Guess I'm done with toyota now if I can't get a free repair at the dealer
Sorry that is happening. That sucks
Will white smoke come from exhaust if it's leaking at this cat heat exchanger?
Yes that coolant turns into steam
There is a Toyota TSB on this. Make sure you tell your viewers this can be fixed for free by the dealer if car is under 80,000 miles and (I think) 10 years
on my 2019 Prius I have the same issue. Dealer is replacing it for free (although they say it's because I have extended coverage)
I checked with my dealer, it’s not covered under warranty stated in that TSB , I have 73k miles on my 2017 Prius. I even called Toyota customer care service, no warranty coverage even when I told them about the TSB.
@@sccphilly Sorry to hear that. maybe a diff problem. I walked in and told them the problem and mentioned the tub and they fixed it free. I would pursue it if its the same problem
my point is this Toyota expert should have mentioned this in the video.....
It looks very expensive to replace!!!
@How to Automotive. Great diagnostic job. Doing the repair right and not just indiscriminately shooting the parts cannon.
Question: What was the condition of the coolant? Since coolant also has corrosion inhibitors, maybe the owners didn't change the coolant as recommended or sooner. Haven't seen that problem with my 2009 Prius.
Jordan to say it was mostly water. All the coolant went out the exhaust.
@@HowtoAutomotive Maybe the condition of the inverter coolant (same coolant used for the radiatir) can help?
Have they corrected this problem in the 2022 Prius?
No. All 3rd and 4th gen Prius can have this problem. Toyota got rid of this feature/defect in the 5th generation 2023+.
Thankfully, bypassing the problem is an relatively easy DIY job that literally requires no parts, but could be an emissions/inspection issue.
The proper fix is like $3+k replacing the entire catalytic converter assembly because of a cheap failed heat exchanger welded to the cat :(
Prius have a coolant cooled catalytic converter.
It’s not cooling the cat. It’s warming the engine faster and the heater inside the cabin.. it has a mechanical thermostat to shut it off once everything is up to temperature
Could the hoses to/from the heat exchanger be clamped, or does the coolant still need to flow through them?
In a pinch, you could loop them around into each other. But you’re still gonna have a check engine light.
My 2017 Prius is doing the same thing, losing coolant slowly, me filling once a week, it has 73 k miles on it, How much is it to replace this heat exchanger exhaust? Parts and labor? Thanks .
$1700 - $2000+
Water is coming out my 3rd Gen Prius exhaust all the time but I never lose coolant. Any ideas?
If it’s small amounts of water that’s normal
Big money cat!!!
What toolbox is that. I thought you had the big Cornwell one
I’m not sure what Mike she saw. It was probably one of my coworkers. I have the 84 inch platinum series Cornwell tool box with a top hutch and a couple roll carts
Out of all manufacturers I didn't think Toyota would do something that dumb
@@HowtoAutomotive I think was just the bench you were leaning against. Lol
@@foodskewed9197 I did just paint that bench a charcoal, gray color that kind of looks like a toolbox
what gen prius is this please?
4th
U pipe at the end of coolant pipes and u are done my man.
Id bypass it
That is an option
Yes I got it done in mine 2019 perius it works fine.
@@numan4689did you bypass it by yourself or mechnic?
@@mikewu8516 mechanic.
Definitely a lame ass design.
