At first I thought Penny Marshall's singing voice wasn't all that great. But when I heard her performing this song with Michael McKean, I was pleased to see that she handled it very well. While not a really great singer, she did have a fine voice suitable for doing pop songs.at a fast tempo. They both did a great job on that number. Miss Marshall's impressive dancing and acrobatic skills have been seen in quite an number of episodes in this series. And Michael McKean is himself a talented singer and musician. It's another outstanding performance well done by the mighty Penny Marshall.
Earlier in the episode Squiggy went to her (where she was rehearsing her love song in the washroom) and told her she can't sing (love songs) But her voice was good for novelty numbers. This proves it - She & Lenny sang it great - it definitely suits her voice. Look at Squiggy himself - he certainly can't sing - but he does well with various Squiggtone songs. (LOL)

Yes she was but she never thought she was. She has said that Cindy was a better actress than her, prettier than her and more talented than her. Penny never gave herself enough credit, she was an awesome, funny, generous, talented and sweet person.

Man, this show takes me back to my youth, and one of my aunts favorite shows. She was religiously in front of the television when Laverne and Shirley came home because she loved that show and a lot of times I would just stop by her house to just sit and watch it with her and we would laugh and anytime I just stumble across, RUclips and see Laverne and Shirley clip. It takes me back to that time and this clip was one of them. My aunts name was Marjorie. She had the nickname of Tootie, but I always called her aunt Laverne and she loved it. It took a while for the family to catch on why I called her Laverne, but they eventually got it then everybody started calling her Tootie Laverne. I missed that old lady. She was my godmother also
It sounds like your Aunt Tootie Laverne was a hoot! For me, it was my mother's Aunt Ruth. Long story but, in 1918, at age 13 her appendix burst and she almost died from the infection, which rendered her unable to have children. No man wanted a barren wife. She went to college to be a teacher. She became a flapper! Smoked, drank gin, wore short skirts and scandalized her family. She found a good man and settled down. As a kid in the 60's she was the favorite person of us kids. She spoiled us rotten. Climbed trees with us. Played Frisbee. Drove her 57 Chevy until she was in her 70's. Aunt Tootie and Aunt Ruth, the world was lucky to have had them.
Loved this show, loved Penny Marshall and the rest of the cast. Only recently found out that Michael McKean wrote this and other great pieces from the show including "Milwaukee Moon".. also enjoyed the beautiful opening sequence by Cindy Williams and Eddie Mekka "They Were You"
