One of the more interesting aspects about Naruto isn’t always the techniques, or the thrill of the fight, or even the dialogue and interactions between characters. While all of these things working in tandem makes the series legendary, what I always found myself captivated by was the characterization of each individual character. To compare two different characters together and see the similarities and differences. Like between Madara and Sasuke. One is consumed by love, one is consumed by hatred, both attempt to destroy the village. Their goals are different, yet similar. Both wish to destroy a way of life to end suffering. For Sasuke, that was destroying the system that killed his brother to foster peace under a one-world dictatorial regime centered around himself. Madara wished to retreat into a world of dreams with the rest of the world to make everyone happy. To have the things they dreamed of. But above all, my favorite characterizations were ones centered around Naruto. Obito Uchiha, Nagato Uzumaki, Gaara, all of these characterizations were pure gold. When we saw these things, we weren’t seeing Naruto facing an antagonist. It was more than that. We were witnessing Naruto facing himself. A different part of him. Another path. The all powerful one who wishes to bring peace at any cost. The one who was left behind and just trying to peace together a world without lonliness. The one that had been discarded and abused becoming the abuser. Each one of these were beautiful in their own way. In this fashion, Kishimoto-sensei has written plenty of what-ifs for us, as each villain is another version of Naruto just slightly different The beauty of Naruto’s story was that the world deals you cards, and sometimes those cards aren’t the best. Sometimes the cards you get are flops. But each of us have no choice but to play them. Some will try to cheat, some will try to bluff, some will fold. But in the end, there will be some who play their cards out to the end, merely believing that the future will bring them a full house. Why am I saying all of this? Because the dynamic between Nagato and Naruto, obvious beyond words, is still one of the best dynamics in the series. So it makes me wonder… What if Naruto were in Nagato’s position? What if he were there? What if the three Ame Orphans became four? How would things have changed? Would they have changed? Would Naruto have changed things? Or would things have changed Naruto? Let’s take a look then, shall we?
