If you stopped the video right now “5-seat Atlas” would give you an essential understanding of the Cross Sport. By ditching the Atlas’s 3rd row, the Cross Sport loses 5.2 inches of overall length while retaining the same 117.3-inch wheelbase. What’s left is super spacious. Cargo space is a stellar 40.3 cubic feet aft of the second row and 77.8 cu.-ft. with the seats folded. For a 2-row midsize SUV, that’s stellar.
Another bragging point is the rear-seat legroom. With the front seat placed for me, the ultimate average human, I fit behind myself with room to spare.
Incidentally, VW is hugely proud that the Atlas has 11 cupholders. To me, 11 cupholders for 5 occupants feels like an unhealthy ratio but reach your own conlusion.
Material quality on our ornate SEL Premium R-Line subject is lovely up high. Though the lower you poke the harder the surface and the presence of actual stitching draws attention to the fake stitching embossed on the dash. Nonetheless, our car’s dark burgundy and black leather add a swanky touch to the commendably comfortable and supportive seats.
For the pilot in command, visibility is slightly inhibited but workable. One thing we’ve noticed driving the Atlas is its lively handling. Thankfully that quality has carried over to the Cross Sport.
Compared to the larger Atlas the Cross Sport steers with a livelier feel.
As is now common, you can also activate Sport Mode for more emotive steering, throttle and transmission behaviors. There’s also an eco mode that we’ll just ignore along with off-road and snow modes. As for ride compliance, the Cross Sport dulls road imperfections with grace while shielding occupants in a serene cabin.
For engine choices you’ve got a base 2-liter 4-cylinder (235hp, 258 lb-ft) that other Blue Book testers have described as “course sounding but sprightly”. Good use of the word “sprightly”, team! There’s also a 3.6L V6 (276hp, 266 lb-ft) reserved for higher trims. With either engine all-wheel drive costs $1,900. Chose the V6 and you can tow up to 5,000 lbs. Fuel economy is underwhelming for the segment, peaking at 21city/24hwy with the front-drive 2.0L and dropping to 16city/22hwy in the all-wheel drive V6. Our tester is the V6 and while it pulls with reasonable enthusiasm when asked, the 8-speed automatic behaves displeasingly at a standard pace.
Off the line, the transmission holds onto to 2nd too long and its shifts are hardly transparent.
Another area of scrutiny is the price. With blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and a 6.5-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a base Cross Sport S trim costs less than $32,000 including destination charges. Luxuriate in Cross Sport options like keyless access, 21-inch wheels, a foot-activated liftgate, plus a 360-degree camera system offering a vast array of useful views shown on an 8-inch infotainment display, and you can spec an SEL Premium R-Line, like this exact model, to more than $51k; a sum unachievable by many of its competitors. I’ll also note that VW’s 6-year warranty has been ditched for 2020. It’s now a 4-year 50k warranty plus 2 years of free maintenance.
So, the powertrain could use some refining, it’s not particularly efficient, and a lack of buying restraint summons eye-popping MSRPs. But the Atlas Cross Sport is also roomy, rides nice, and wraps its buyer in a distinct style.
If you like the Volkswagen Atlas but abhor the notion of traveling with more than 4 friends, the Cross Sport is your slightly coupier alternative. And now, everyone simultaneously shout how you feel about Cross Sport’s styling.
We just added one to our family and love it! It looks great, handles well, has awesome technology, and is very comfortable. So happy we took the plunge - it’s our first Volkswagen and we could not be happier!🚘💙🚘💙
So help me out! I’m thinking about pulling there trigger and buy an SE/ with tech. How has it been for you? No reliability issues? I’ve never owned a VW...and am always concerned to branch out.
Lol it's your first and definitely your last VW, you just wait and see the Atlas is a cluster fuck of problems and defects, my sister has one it has barely 12k miles on it and it falls apart...and no VW doesn't do anything to help you out
@@BXLnord your sister doesn’t know how to drive an actual car
@@bachbui lol yeah sure keep defending this overpriced pile of garbage that VW brands and sells as a car, the transmission is one of many things gone bad ,she has it for a little bit over 9 months now and it has been in the garage for 3 months and a half in total, everything breaks from transmission to electric windows to the abs system oh and apparently paint on the back starts peeling off.
@@BXLnord I don’t know why my dad’s Atlas after 3 years is still fine in every way
I have 10 cup holders. I have no family or friends and I still use all of them. Phone, keys, coins, parts, iPad mount, and sometimes cups.
Good to see physical reviews are back underway!
Also the headlights and grill remind me slightly of the 2020 Explorer.
Paul Rudd. 3 years watching these videos and I finally get who Micah reminds me of.
I literally had this exact realization during this video!
Okay me to
thinking the same
Hahah
You mean who he imitates. Micah is like a character from "swingers" in the year 2021.
Just get the SEL V6. $44k with everything you need. I test drove one and actually really liked it
It lost half it's value the moment you drove out of the lot. Hope it holds up for you!
Have had a ‘21 V6 SELP Cross sport for a month. The only place the hard plastics matters or is noticeable is where your knee hits the console. Consistently Getting 21 mpg mixed.18-19 city and 24-25 hwy. Given the fact it’s closer in size to a full size than a mid size SUV that’s not bad. Have driven on 2,4 and 6 lane hwy in traffic and power isn’t an issue. Tech works great and is easy to use. was a big reason I bought it. It’s a handsome SUV that’s very usable.
I love this SUV!!! My God, this is what I wanted. Beautiful!!!😷☺️😊
Can't wait for a Venza Review. I think it looks amazing, and is really efficient with it's hybrid. Might be the class best vehicle
The Toyota Venza? That went out of production 5yrs ago unless they're coming out with another one lol
@@hornbytrainsets They are coming out with a new one, it looks pretty 🔥
Check it out if you have time
hornbytrainsets It’s coming back into production in 2021....lol back to you!
Definitely one of the best looking midsize suv, VW really nailed it
We have a 2019 atlas with the v6. Underwhelming power, and fuel economy, but great size for a family of 6.
I wish the cross”sport” had more power. Beautiful car, but they failed with the engine and interior.
Midsize 2-row SUV’s are absolutely killing it these days. The Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, & Jeep Grand Cherokee haven’t had major updates in years and are STILL competitive. The Chevy Blazer & this VW Cross Sport are fantastic, and the Honda Pilot is nice if you don’t mind the bland styling and uninspiring driving dynamics. Can’t really go wrong in this segment these days.
Dude Micah - I *LOVE* your video editing... very clever transitions. Yeah, I noticed that. And I think there was a car in this video too, or something?
How’d you film it driving without a film crew?
"The lower you poke, the harder the surface"!!!!!
Nice vehicle but too expensive, IMHO.
I agree, could get a used lexus RX with low km and the same features for less than this vehicles price.
I would be glad if we had such "overpriced" vehicles in Europe. Here the Tiguan is the same sum of money but that's much smaller, has even less power and less equipment. This Atlas would cost 60k here.
You think it's expensive to buy - wait till the warranty runs out and you're paying for it again in repair bills.
@@DonTSmith 😂🤣😂🤣
Love the look and leg room.. Especially the back seat leg room!! So the second row doesn't adjust to slide forward or back. Why would anyone be pressed to do so if you have all that leg room??!😍
The dashboard, however, is my BIGGEST disappointment!!!! If the look and style could fast forward from 2010 to 2020, that would be great!!!!👍🏽🙃
I had VW atlas premium and Tiguan before and sold it within 1 year, engine lights on 3 times just within 1 year less than 10k miles, as well as recall, I like their design and roomy space, but unfortunately the quality is not goods , now I go for Lexus
Lexus has great quality but the design of their SUVS leaves much to be desired.
My sister bought one also transmission went bad after 6k miles lol
@@BXLnord THE VW transmission went bad after 6k miles?? Wow!!
@@pierre-richardromain6708 yup, not a sensor or the solenoid, the entire fucking thing had to be changed lol, one of many problems
I actually test drove the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Limited yesterday. Great ride! Very comfortable as well.
I don't want my compact SUV giving everyone angry eyes. Fewer angles is not bad, Porsche Macan shows how lovely curves and non-squinty headlights look.
The Atlas Cross Sport is a big boy and definitely not compact. However... I agree, the Macan is an absolute stunner.
Not my favorite among the midsize crossovers. But for those who (a) neither need nor want a third row; (b) want the relatively large cargo space (both total and behind the second row) in the Cross Sport compared to other midsize 2 row SUV's; and prefer the coupe like styling of the Cross Sport compared to the Atlas, it may be an appealing choice. A point to keep in mind is that the Cross Sport is an especially large 2 row SUV. While its competitors range from about 188" to 192", the Cross Sport comes in a 195.5". That puts it in the category of 3 row rivals that range from 195" to 203".
Ho!
I'll break the news to my local VW dealership. They keep calling me to come in for a test drive, but my schedule and now my disinterest keeps getting in the way.
03:10, wow.. look at all that wasted space to make it look like the front end is beefier than it is. 🤷🏼♂️
convenient to access parts for maintenance tho
Leased an SEL v6 4Motion over the CX5/9 to replace the wife's old Cx5. We love it the comfort and ride quality but power is def underwhelming. Fuel economy could be better but for an around town car, its not terrible.
My dad and mom are gonna buy one it is so cool
LOL....now we are using pump bottles of Purell to show what fits (or not) in the pockets/cupholders. I don't like the sped up version of Micah, but maybe since the COVID-19, you've had a turbo modification to your voice. Again, thanks for making these videos. I'm sure your fanbase has increased since we are stuck at home. I hope you and your family remain well.

I love it’s look! Good job Micah ❤️👍
How was the armrest?
Wow, I’m really liking the video transitions, especially at the beginning! Nicely done.
The interior bring me back to 1990s
For the price it should be close to 300hp and top trip 320hp ..but that's just me lol
Yes 300hp, 26 mpg V6 and have better color combos and an Audi logo. Kind of like a German Version of a Hyundai.
Nice car…. Will it come to India?
I heard that the ve beetle is gone true or false or are they going to keep going making it and do y'all think vw is going to bring back the vw cc because I think the vw arteon probably took its place not sure who knows what the future holds
Love it! Cant wait to drive off the lot in mine 😊🙏🏽
Hope there is a gas station next to the dealer, you’ll need it…
Biggest golf ever made VW just sizes up golf and made a lot different bigger and wider golfs in different names, Touareg was an exception though.
VW has received a considerable amount of criticism for the reduction of their bumper-to-bumper warranty from 6 years to 4 years in their current models. So purely from a PR perspective it was a mistake (imo). On the other hand, from a consumer standpoint the inclusion of two years of standard service/maintenance that's now included it's arguably a considerably better deal. Consider, for example, that only a tiny minority of owners ever redeem a warranty claim in years five and six of a warranty. Not only do all manufacturers require that all service and maintenance requirements be performed on time over the course of ownership, the percentage of owners who experience a warranty covered repair in the fifth and sixth years of ownership is minuscule, well under 2% of owners of any brand. On the other hand, annual maintenance and service runs an average of $300 per year for a VW SUV. That's a $600 savings that virtually every purchaser receives. A rational consumer might well prefer a 100% guarantee of a $600 savings vs the unknown potential of a warranty claim after four years that at least 98% of owners will never receive.
You truly dazzle us with your verbose deluge of statistics. Whenever I stumble across one of your posts, I immediately grab my thesaurus, an abacus, and a fresh pot of coffee and settle in for an afternoon novella.

I'm still waiting for him to post a bibliography that supports these highly specific facts and percentages. To paraphrase Mark Twain, there are 3 types of lies.....lies, damn lies, and statistics.
...really? You'd take 4 oil changes, 2 tire rotations, and 1 cabin air filter (maybe $400-500) over 2 years/20k miles of additional warranty coverage...
Good review. Would like to see a review by you of the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Sport. Thank you.
Looking good! And the car too!
I had high hopes for the Atlas and Cross Sport, but the engine options, mpg, and interior aesthetics and materials are not up to par with the competition. Also, while it has tons of interior, leg and head room, my knee bangs against the side of very wide center console.
Volkswagen gets it right with the exterior, but my goodness the hard, thin, scratchy sea of plastic on the interior is a deal breaker. Give me the Murano or JGC any day. And this is supposed to be the US alternative to the Touareg. Yea we got jibbed big time.
@@perezsykes3803 what is JGC

This vehicle is on the Top 5 SUV To Avoid list. Warranty was costing VW too much that they dumbed it down to 4 years. Brutal. Junk and money pit. Love the review!
Considering that the previous warranty was for 6 years and not a single VW sold with that warranty had used more than the first year of the warranty, just how do you conclude that the previous warranty was "costing VW too much"? Artithmetic and logic are clearly not your strong suit.
@@stephenhendricks103 Sorry, didn’t know you had one in the garage...
@@pdlynch4330 I don't. As noted in another post the Cross Sport nor the Atlas is my favorite midsize SUV. Each is too large to fit my needs.
Just pointing out that VW couldn't possibly be "costing VW too much" for their six year warranty versus the current 4 year version since the 6 year version was not offered until the 2019 model year.
No it's your ignorant opinion buddy
Long live the Venza!
The Venza is coming back for 2021.
You crazy funny bloke! Such a lively video.
Hey Micah! Nice review! This is a good-looking SUV. I test drove the Mazda CX-5 Signature AWD yesterday. It's a great car. After seeing this video...not sure what to purchase. What do you think?
...if you need space and towing, cross sport...if you want solid and proven, cx-5. Which one fits your needs the best...
@@K03sport Neither one fits what I'm looking for. Based on the MANY reviews I've read, the Atlas Cross Sport is not reliable at all. Great space but not reliable. The CX-5 is a GREAT value and performance, but small interior space. It's for this reason that I purchased the 2021 Toyota 4Runner this past January. Great value and reliability.

Great car! Go with the 2.0T, stage 1 tune it, and it's amazing.
...ahhh, VW aftermarket is endless and helps cure initial VW shortcomings. Might as well do a full 3" turbo back while you are at. But the market this sits in doesn't have a GTI mindset.

When he said 30k I nodded my head like yeah thats not too bad. I litteraly shit myself when he said 51k for a loaded model. This is a VW not a Benz/audi/bmw. Vw is really pushing the brand lately (areton cough cough)
... How about the pheaton? All car prices are shooting up faster than the purchase power. Remember, all prices are negotiable; lots of headroom in the msrp (by design)
It’s crazy, I wouldn’t spend that much for a non-luxury car
2:20 am I the only one that would get really annoyed if I had to look at that volume button every day? The sideways symbol just urks me.
That's why you keep it in the center and use the steering wheel buttons to control volume
@@brotherdubious Lol that's what I always did when I drove my mom's Touareg. Still annoying, though.
I have a 2016 GTI, and it has the same problem. I find that I am usually too busy driving or doing other things in the car to even notice. Maybe if I had OCD I would care. I agree that it's a strange design quirk.
i used to have a jetta and now i have a bmw x3 and both of them had a volume button like that and it’s very irritating so i only use the steering wheel controls
The VW DSG has always been a bit rickety, but the new Golf 8 e-TSI DSG with it’s 48v mild hybrid system pulls away so smoothly, it’s absolutely brilliant!
This has a normal automatic not a DSG
I wonder if this one has same issue with engine and transmission as Atlas? Issue is of, transmission won't shift down to 2nd gear, stays in 3rd gear at 5mph, then give a gas little, you will hear grinding, clanking noise.
I really like it
This guy is hilarious! Very Paul Rudd like 😂
Funny how people say it’s expensive so don’t pay MSRP for it. Negotiations like I did on this cause I was able to get $7k off sticker price. Just have to find the right incentives and the right month...or in this case it was 114 here in Vegas lol.
Isn’t this a Q8 ???
Yes... A cheaper Q8 and Urus... Just need a 300hp
Not really. Different platform/underpinnings. The Atlas uses a transversely-mounted engine and corresponding drivetrain, while the Q8 uses a longitudinally-mounted engine and a rear-biased AWD system. You will find a lot more expensive materials in the underpinnings of the Q8, like greater use of forged aluminum, etc. But, if you ignore the more expensive construction, higher output engines, and luxury features, sure, same thing.
What I said... A cheaper made Q8 or Urus
@@jminaya90 ever suv from VW is a cheaper q8 Urus by that standard. Other than every single component it's the same thing.

Nice car
Cheaper version of Audi Q8
Cheaper version of Urus
Neither the q8 or the Urus are REMOTELY connected to this vehicle under the skin. Good lord do some research. The q8 and Urus are halo SUVs with more engineering in the frames than this car has in it's entirety. They share a slant back look that is all. This is a Golf with a giant body kit.
I test drove this car this past weekend and it handled great very smooth ride and great feel behind the wheel, but there are two major drawbacks that will prevent me from even considering it. First the roof line is way too low when getting into the car, the seat must be put all the way down in order for a 5 foot 10 person to get in without hitting his head and to make things worse Volkswagen did not give the seats easy in easy out activation meaning they do not lower automatically when you turn the car off. So basically you need to adjust the sea every time you get in and out, without re-adjusting the seat, I could not get out of the car and that is also a major safety issue how is this ever passed safety is beyond me. In a SUV I like to ride with the seat high, is that not the point of a SUV. The second issue is with the digital cockpit Display, why they would put eight point type in something you need to see clearly is beyond believe. It is incredibly difficult to read illumination at maximum is barely readable. Two major flaws makes this a no go for me.
Mike Russell not this SUV VW calls it a Coupe
