The Jellyman's Daughter & Friends - Young Americans (David Bowie)

- I didn't post anything when David Bowie died, but I'm going to post something now. I heard it on the news that day (oh boy) and it completely floored me. That afternoon I spent going about my day with Bowie as the soundtrack and the songs hit me harder than usual. What a sound he captured, what creative genius.
My heart was full of musical desire and I originally thought, we should do a Jellyman's Daughter cover in remembrance. But that wouldn't really fill the hole, I then called a bunch of super talented Edinburgh musicians to share my idea and amazingly on one nights notice (two hours for the rhythm section) everyone was on board.
For free and out of passion. We literally recorded everything in 24 hours of madness, laughs and spectacular takes.
Massive thanks to all the musicians, David O'Leary who did the longest engineering stint he's ever done, camera crew Camille Murray and Andrew Perry, and Graham for discovering he can edit videos.
With everything in perspective , I feel very lucky to be alive here and now, making music with the most talented bunch of friends! Turn your speakers to 11. Here's to you, Bowie.

10 stars for the background singers.
A beautiful snapshot of the Edinburgh scene in 2016! Fantastic!
The last singer should've been the singer for all the verses
True. The first singer sounded like Lou Reed to me, which is a good thing.
I disagree. The song reflects the diversity, that David lived.
please tell me who is the last singer? I will move back to Edin to fins him :D
That's Angus Munro - he's got material out under his own name.
He also had the enthusiasm just like David Bowie did.
What a touching tribute to one of Rock's most innovative icons. His passing is indeed sad , but great people like u honoring him, keeps his memory alive. Love ur funky down version & the backup singers = JUST INCREDIBLE ! Thanks for posting.
Progression of underwhelmed to HOLY SHIT THAT’S GOOD!

Extremely well done. Very impressive. What a bunch of very talented young people. I hope they are still performing today, and are very successful at it.

Angus Munro (at the end) is a real talent. He has stage presence and a superb voice to match, one that he knows how to use. Saw him sing with Fat Suit a year or two ago. What's he doing now?
who the flying fuck is that last singer? he's like the vocal second coming of christ....
i mean you're all great but holy shit.
That would be Angus Munro, look him up! He has a solo album on the way, keep yer eyes peeled!

"Hey Howard there's your china man."
The Jellyman is proud of his daughter and his/her friends, right?
You really are so damned cool !!! :-)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
that was fkincool - gazza England x
isn't it "she WANTS the Young American?"
Bummer. I though that was Peter Dinklage in the thumbnail
I hate when singers try making the song their own by sluring and making the pitch lower or higher.
I thought most of you couldn't sing. Sorry, not being nasty - just being honest.
Orripilante
Do you remember... President Clinton...and the bills your parents paid?
It's almost like they have no clue who David Bowie is
They were thinkin' Mr. Rodgers?
Captain Kangaroo & Mr. Greenjeans allstars?
The first guy is super flat
The ladies are amazing though especially the third one
Everything was fine but the lead vocals was awful. Weak, without power and character. I repeat, everything was awesome but the guy.
Awful vocalists
This is outstanding!!!!! Brilliant!!!
I imagine the ever handsome David Bowie smiling broadly ... and singing along from Paradise.
RIP David Bowie.
That choir is amazing! Great tribute.
Great to hear this on the Janice Forsyth Show yesterday afternoon. I've played it countless times since, and it gets better every time. #shivers
Thank you!
32 pricks gave the thumbs down to this effort, this masterpiece, this congregation of musicians. What a great cover!
Well said.
Lad at the end, Angus? I'm old and this is probably in my top 5 favourite Bowie songs. Your vocal gave me chills, well done.
I am a huge Bowie Fan : "Young Americans" is not my favorite Bowie's song but i love your cover, with a beautiful energy. It's always a great pleasure to listen to it, at least once a day !
I just didn't think I would ever hear Young Americans given such a heart-felt, earthy, soulful tribute by such superb singers and musicians! The arrangement was outstanding too!
Thank you so much for this. Are all the performers Scottish?
Only problem is, I hear you're a duo...what are people expecting after hearing that lol? I'll look out for you anyway.
Lovely guys. Cathartic even. xxx
God bless Bowie.
The lead vocal part of this song was not intended to be sung in a melodic fashion - too many words, syllables and timber changes - listen to how Bowie modulates his voice almost constantly to avoid sound "melodic" yet consistently interesting. Rather Bowie understood what his own song required vocally. Since this was during Bowie's "blue eyed soul" days he approached the performance as a Pentecostal Preacher offering a sermon for the masses on the merits of youth and the disadvantages of aging all the while encapsulating the logic under the purview of "life in America."
The performance is intended to build to a crescendo and in that regard kudos to whoever chose the progression of singers. This version does indeed build especially with Emily Kelly setting up the "moral lesson of love or something close to love" that Angus Munro delivers in high impact fashion all the while reminding the listener of the "Holy Grail" of 'Young Americans', "ain't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry."
Loved it!
"The lead vocal part of this song was not intended to be sung in a melodic fashion" What an absolute laughable crock of shit. Seriously, you seem to like to hear yourself speak because you pulled everything you just said out of your ass. God Lord what a pile of nonsense
@@Johnnywhamo I got that part practically verbatim from an interview with David Bowie. MORON!!!
To adequately demonstrate this listen to Angus Munro practically 'preach' his way through his part which encapsulates what Bowie was intending. Well l apparently can pull more intelligent things out of my ass than you can manage from your brain!
@@novyttude .......what interview would that be?
As well...''he approached the performance as a Pentecostal Preacher offering a sermon for the masses on the merits of youth and the disadvantages of aging all the while encapsulating the logic under the purview of "life in America."
Perhaps you could direct me to an interview where he gives this as an explanation because that is a giant pile of......whaaaaat?
VERY ,VERY WELL DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU FOR SHARING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That intro is the most disappointing cover I've ever heard. Not that the band is bad, by any means, it's just David Sanborn's sax in Young American's is that good.
Not impressed by the lead vocalists but the rest was great probably the hardest bowie song vocally to attempt
Such a great song! Dig the tribute.
Awesome... I'd love to hear more about this collaboration...
...and the last singer came, and raised the bar that can be seen from space. Great work you all!
Did he create a space oddity?
AWESOME
Fantastic!!!
Nope. Just nope.
Brilliant.
Well done girls :)
=D I fell in love with this best cover of my favorite Bowie song ! I keep listening it =D Over and over ! Thank you guys
I miss you bowie :(
n this is so beautiful :)
