  • Nestled between steep mountains on the banks of Aurlandsfjord, just a few hours outside Bergen in western Norway, you can find the small village of Undredal. Only about 60 people live there. Goats far outnumber residents. Before 1988, there was no road connection. The village was only accessible by boat.
The environment surrounding Undredal is humbling, but the town itself has a small, quaint charm. It is a place steeped in history, yet heavily influenced by modern tourism and development. The village is best known for its generations-old tradition of producing brown and white goat cheese, as well as its historic stave church dating back to the 12th century.
Undredal has opened up more over time, making it increasingly important to strike a balance between embracing the economic benefits of tourism, and maintaining its local character. As the village fights to preserve its identity in the modern era, it continues to change, while in many ways, staying the same.
