Eric Benninghoff is visual storyteller, Fulbright researcher, former TV reporter, political science major, and 2020 graduate of Yale University. But at his core, he loves meeting new people and helping to share their stories. Included in this channel are a selection of his Fulbright video reports from Norway, as well as his top stories as a multimedia journalist in Chattanooga, TN.
Undredal: Exploring rural tradition in the wake of modern tourism (2023)
Nestled between steep mountains on the banks of Aurlandsfjord, just a few hours outside Bergen in western Norway, you can find the small village of Undredal. Only about 60 people live there. Goats far outnumber residents. Before 1988, there was no road connection. The village was only accessible by boat.
The environment surrounding Undredal is humbling, but the town itself has a small, quaint charm. It is a place steeped in history, yet heavily influenced by modern tourism and development. The village is best known for its generations-old tradition of producing brown and white goat cheese, as well as its historic stave church dating back to the 12th century.
