How to test a Transmission Solenoid

In this video I show how to electrically test an On/Off DC solenoid taken from various transmissions and manufacturers. These particular Solenoids are electromagnetic switches that are used to control oil valves.

Very useful video thank you! I have been testing some solenoids and I know, or used to know, almost nothing about these things. This helps me see that a bad solenoid will still click but the plunger wont move. My solenoids have moving plungers and clicks but I don't think the plungers are actually moving far enough with each actuation.

The clicks I heard from the "good" solenoids were the same clicks I heard when you sent the 12volts to the bad solenoid. The only way to know if it was good was when the valve moved like it did in the first solenoid you tested. Thank you for the examples this video was still helpful 👍

I have a DTC p0777 on my jeep. I've never dug into a transmission other than replacing a torque converter. Hopefully this isn't too bad for the solenoids

You did not show us the electrical source and the voltage and wiring layout .. this is most important than what you've shown

He mentions they are 12 volt, 2 pin Solenoids. You do not need a wiring diagram for a 2 pin solenoid, and the electrical source is a battery because that is the only 12V source on a car
