I am 70 years old. I've been home one week from a 6 day backpacking trip in the High Sierra (Golden Trout Wilderness - Sequoia National Park) with my 39 year old son. When you said, "I am stoked to have my son with me" it really touched my heart. Because I, too, was really stoked to have my son with me.

Warmed my heart watching you and your soon enjoy this trip together. I lost my son to a tragic hiking accident while thru-hiking the PCT in 2020. Hiking together was our time to bond. Don’t ever take it for granted. It can be taken away in an instant.

    Heyhey Dan,
I know these sorts of videos likely don't make the sort of money that others do but I really appreciate the focus of the trip, adventure, and family on this video. Thank you for taking the time to just film the beauty of what you saw and the way you enjoyed it. This is the sort of stuff that I think gets most of us out of bed and into the wilderness and what I hope to share with my little one when they're older if they're interested. Hope you're recovering well from rabdo's impacts, enjoying the trails, and have a ton of fun in Banff. I can't make a trip like that right now but you're probably going to love it. Cheers for all the content.

You should be stoked to have your son with you! These are memories that he will have long after you are gone, God willing that is a lifetime from now. Great job, Dan! Being a good father is the most important thing you can do. I am 68 and my son is 41. We still go on backpacking trips together. Soon we will be adding my grandson to those trips.

I spend a lot of time in the back country, mostly now doing volunteer trail work, and I love being outdoors and sharing the experience with new backpackers. I'm about to get my first grandchild, and at 69, and I fear I will never get to spend time with him like you do with your son, since I will be old as the hills. These times are a blessing, enjoy before he goes his own way.

What a gift you have been given Dan. To slow down for a time and include your family in a piece of your adventures. I know it is probably fun going on trips with other pros but what a memory you made with your son. Don’t stop your gear reviews but this brought joy to my heart for you and memories of my own. Bravo buddy!

Dan, this video is great! This is a memory your son will cherish in the future and he has the advantage of repeating it when he wishes or sharing it with his future children.
This trail was one of my first backpack experiences when i was your son's age, although we carried canvas packs, plastic tarps, and steel pans for cooking over open fires (haha!).
Thanks for sharing this with us.
My Dad came with me a few years later on this trail for his first backpack. After my parents divorce, mother backpacker with me on this trail as a healing adventure. Years later my son and i hiked this and I look forward to sharing this with my grandson and granddaughter when they get a bit older (the trail along those cliffs is no joke!).

    • @memathews

@@TheNoobHiker Yes, the kid's smoke bomb burned 48,000 acres, mostly wilderness, in 2017, and trapped 150 hiking visitors who were forced to spend an unplanned night in the forest and hike roughly 12 miles the next day to safety through the wildfire.
A handful of visitors were experienced hikers and military, so they gathered the group together. A helicopter found the group and a ranger hiked in from the other end of the trail before dark with snack bars and mylar blankets, and a radio, to spend the night and lead them to safety. Afterwards, over 4,000 people volunteered to repair the trails and worked three years to reopen this trail. We are still working to open some trails and this trail closes a couple of times a year for rockfall and downed trees.

The Canada trip is so tempting! I was ready to jump on it if it was around $1,000. Definitely looks worth actual price though. Was already thinking of taking family up there or to Glacier National Park next summer but I’m thinking we may wait one more year to accomplish some of our financial goals. Definitely interested in any other group trips you might do. Maybe one without an actual tour guide might be able to help keep part of the costs down.
