I work at REI and was showing a customer the toaks 750 pot. Right as I said "too bad that lid doesnt snap on" they turned it upside down and it stayed put. Too my surprise, just that one on the shelf was slightly bent or out of shape enough to just barely snap on. He was sold immediately haha.
Perfect cook kit for a one night is stopping by Subway before I hit the trail. No cooking, no cleanup, and no weight on the way back. Even comes in its own trash bag!
I live in Alaska. We’ve had wildfires a lot recently. So I adjusted by grabbing a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme when heading out before getting to the wilderness. And a sub for the first lunch or dinner whilst setting up camp. It makes life easier. The trash gets thrown in a gallon baggie in the bear canister to cut down on food smells. Bears are big here 🐻😂💕🏕️
I absolutely love your channel. My wife and I recently started backpacking and using advice from you and other youtubers we've been able to build out our packs nicely and on a budget and keep our base weight under 20lbs each.
The Soto Amicus stove on Amazon shows at $48.95 (NOT $84.00, like the MSR, which, by the way has been reduced to $75.15, as of 01/10/2024) The Soto Windmaster stove (my personal favorite) shows at $64.99 (regular $69.99). I'll stick with my Windmaster; it has been a GREAT stove, with no problems, regarding the igniter! Another GREAT video, Dan!!! Thanks for all you do and all you are! Happy Trails, my friend!
Try the lid from the Stanley cook kit! Yes, the lid is stainless, but it fits well and the weight difference is minimal. The strainer in the lid is far better than others. Granted, I do replace the plastic lid tab in the middle of the lid with a tiny keyring.
Others have mentioned the GSI Minimalist (which often goes on sale for ~$29 vs normal price of $35). I use this cook system and found that it is the best for those who just want to boil water for themselves. It is so versatile and lightweight. Ive used mine for 5 years now and haven’t found a better cook for system. It comes with a silicon grip handle which works great. Ive never burned myself using it. It also has a coozie which is great for handling the pot and keeping hot drinks hot when its cold. The lid it comes with can be used to sip or as a lid for boiling water by simply turning the lid upside down so it fits loosely. I highly recommend this cookset! Its the only piece of gear that i have not upgraded or replaced because it has lasted so long and imho, i havent seen a better replacement.
My cook kit consist of the Stanley 700 ml pot, a 14oz gsi outdoor mug, BSR stove, and a tea strainer for my coffee, all of which plus fuel fits inside the stanley. It may weigh twice as much as other kits all together but its all tough and cost me about $50 all together.
Strictly water boiling here also. For my hikes I use a 750 alu pot (+wobbly lid) which fits a gas canister and a MSR Pocketrocket 2 stove, true to it's name. Plus I use a foldable plastic tripod for the canister for stability and also a piece of 'extra strong version/ribbed' household alu foil (with double folded edges for some extra strength) as a windscreen or protection for inside-tent cooking. The alu can be folded/reused many times and also quite small for packing. I'm amazed when seeing people prepare meals with fresh ingredients, on a trangia burner, filet mignon in mushroom-pepper sauce and sautéed asparagus and all. Usually at the end of the day, I'm famished, almost counting the minutes of my just hydrated meal and I have to tell myself to actually let it hydrate properly. Still too much other stuff on my 'nice to have' hike gear list, to consider a titanium pot...
Everyone knows the old adage about ounces, pounds and pain but at point there’s diminishing returns. Sometimes just having better food, gear or whatever just makes the experience better. I remember listening to a podcast discussing backpacking elk hunts and one of the guys was incredibly weight conscious to the point that all of his meals were drinkable in a protein shake mixer. Didn’t take a stove of any kind, he viewed it all as calories intake. By the end of the 6 day hunt his partner who was telling the story says that he noticed the weight conscious guy was watching his every bite. Instead he had packed mountain house, instant potatoes, and even ramen noodles. Yeah, he had to carry all the extra weight but he felt better, slept better and had better emotional energy.
I don't care about weight, I vanlife so I'm in the camp with the vanlifers, overlanders, car campers, and teardrop community who loves the Stanley Two-Cup cookset nesting with an Ozark Trails stainless steel cup with the butterfly handles. For your money, that is the best buy system because you get the full cookset plus a mug, a straining lid that fits both and locks on the cook kit for about $20. It's the perfect thing for a cup of coffee or tea on the go if weight isn't a deal breaker.
I made a pot lid for my cup out of the lid of a pie can. It clips on an everything. Its amazing what you can achieve when you stop trying to solve all of your problems with a credit card.
I have a 650ml Toaks for ultralight trips, and an OLICAMP Hard Anodized XTS Pot, 1-Litre pot with the heat transfer fins for trips when I want to prioritize faster boil times and fuel efficiency. Pick your favorite stove. Any long handle spoon will do.
That orange cozy serves an important role. If you ever use your pot on an open flame, you will get black soot all over it. That orange cozy will protect your other gear from getting soot all over it. (To clean the soot off the pot, use a green Scotch-Brite scouring pad with baking soda and a little water.)
That's a lot of stuff to buy just to basically recreate the GSI Minimalist which you can pick up for 35 bucks. It also includes a much better pot grabber that I actually prefer over handles. The one advantage this setup has is packability. With the GSI set, the lid won't quite go on snug when I put my pocket rocket deluxe in. Other stoves fit fine, the PRD is just a big stove.
After watching an older video of yours, have been using the Toaks pot and Soto stove for all the reasons you mentioned in both that and this video, but have still been using the original Toaks lid and securing it in my pack with that orange Toaks sack, which then doubles as my throw bag for bear hangs, has worked out great, can't imagine changing this setup...
Been running a similar setup for years, snow peak 1l titanium pot pr2 stove, snow peaks also came with a 500ml drinking cup that the 1l fit into. Changed last year to a msr windburner, its a bit heavier but so much better on bc’s west coast.
my go to is a 2L MSR aluminum pot... i'm only boiling water... but in one pot I can boil enough for 2 cups of coffee, breakfast, and still have some warm water to wash up with.
Hey Dan! Sorry to bum you out, but Soto came out with the titanium pots recently, and they’re THE lightest on the market. They also come with lids and a pot grabber. I know you were excited about your cookset, but you’re gonna have to replace it with this 😂
I have one of those stoves and I noticed the screw holding the igniter was loose. I put a spot of JB weld and retightened it, and it has been good ever since.
I found a silicone sipper lid that fits my Toaks 550. LOVE IT! It stays firmly on so I can use it as a lid when I store my canister in the pot. Unfortunately the company I bought it from (Riveted Oaks designs) doesn’t make anymore.
yeah this^. Recently saw setup this on My Life Outdoors (I think???) who I think noticed this from Justin. The collapsible Sea to Summit silly-cone mug fits on my Toaks - yet I am still using a rubberband.
Been using the Coleman F1 lite 4800W 77g stove with Toaks 750ml titanium pot for a while now. I think at 4800W it was the most powerful stove for its size. The Coleman F1 has been in use for over 10 years now. It’s so small you can fit it in palm of your hand and close your hand.
I started off with the jet boil and I now have a small little stove in the same pot as you and a gas canister and I personally find it to be the best set up as the taste of less space and is significantly lighter than a jet boil
Fire maple petrel paired with the fire maple green peak stove offers pretty much everything you're looking for here with the exception of being titanium. I'm extremely happy with the setup
I nest a toaks 550 inside a MSR Titan(850ml) which nests inside MSR Big Titan(2L) and a small fuel canister, lighter, wash cloth, neck buff(doubles as dish towel), small bottle of soap, Snow peak Gigapower stove + windscreen which all weigh about 820grams. Unbeatable versatility at a bearable weight.
Appreciate the frankenkit I've been running a Trangia with a JetBoil companion cup for a while and a folding spoon. A lot of the same reasoning but I also pack a few more items into the pot in favour of a bottle of fuel outside the pot.
Hey Dan, I highly recommend the BRS3000 stove. It’s 26 grams, cost $20, and you can find it at garage grown gear. My personal cooking setup is the Vargo 700ml bot (has a screw on top that doesn’t leak), the brs3000t, and the fuel canister. All 3 together weigh .79 oz
I have one of those stoves. Very small and super light! But found it a bit unstable. That, and when it comes to wind performance, simmer settings or fuel efficiency it falls behind a number of other stoves. I ended up grabbing a Soto Windmaster. The extra weight is worth it I reckon.
I liked the video. I’m a sucker for more efficient cooking stuff. BTW, The reason the Toaks weighs almost as much as the Soto is due to the aluminum handles and bracket on the Toaks. The Soto titanium pot will need either handles or the coozy with some sort of claw handle because the titanium will convey heat better than aluminum. I’d bet the Soto pot with coozy and handle is going to be heavier than the Toaks pot. I think if Soto sold just the top more folks would buy that item. I know I would. But I’m not paying $38 for a plastic top. That’s something only rich Dudes like Dan can afford.
On that missing screw... Bring your stove to a hardware store with open bins of screws. Randomly try various small metric stainless steel machine screws, till you find the correct thread pitch and diameter (it will screw in the old threaded hole, nicely). If it is too long, careful work with pliers, a grindstone and a tin of cooling water will fix that excess length.
I was looking for that spoon & like everyone else out of stock. However I found one very similar 9 3/4" from GSI essential spoon long. I have tried it out & I really like it. Bought it at Cabelas & bought all 3 that were there. $4.99 each
I am a huge fan of Ozark Trail. I got 7 buddies into bwca camping with OT stuff. Cheap enough for a beginner that might not go again, and does the job until you slowly replace gear.
I found the yeti cup lid or the Ozark trail Tumblr lid fit my 750 ML pot perfectly. Of course it weighs a little bit more than your covers but I use it on almost a daily basis for my coffee at work.
Soto windmaster with the 3 prongs tri-flex weighs 62 grams and its igniter is way better than the pocket rocket deluxe. So, weighs less and is better, that’s a win.
I was experimenting with the toak mug and I actually really love the soto setup. I would probably bring both as I do love a mug but that handle always heats up pretty good when I'm pulling it off the stove (though titanium can lose heat like nothing else, really incredible stuff). I think Soto actually just started to sell their lid separately but I got their full kit and I love it. The pot grabber is really nice and it comes with an insulated sleeve which I love so that I can boil my water and then insulate it and add my food to that the titanium doesn't lose all that heat as fast. Because the toaks lid really does suck unfortunately.
If you want your drink to stay hotter longer, get a dedicated mug for that purpose -- that is double walled, vacuum insulated. MSR Titan Ultralight Titanium Double Wall Camp Mug with Lid. 375 ml
Different trips require different cook kits. Long marches with a light pack and for just boiling water, I go for the MSR Pocket rocket or the MSR Reactor. For fishing trips or basecamp I go for a bigger burning head like the MSR Windpro. If it's cold you have to use a multifuel like the MSR Whisperlite. I myself have more than 20 different burners. It's crazy but can't think of selling a single one of them.
Nice video showing how to problem-solve a serious cook kit dilemma ;) I also carry a 750 Ti pot (by Boundless Voyage), Soto Windmaster & 110 g fuel canister. For longer trips, I'll carry the 220 g canister loose in my pack. Main effort is to boil water & rehydrate meals.
I had this sort of serendipity with my OG GSI Halulite Minimalist lid and a 750ml titanium pot I just got :D it weighs an ounce more than your lid there, but it's a backpacking sippy cup lol and again lol, I weighed my Halulite pot against titanium and went "welp" so, TIL, locktite the screw holding the igniter on my new Amicus... I feel like I saw that spoon in the camping section at Walmart tonight while grabbing a new backpack (it has a duffle-style zipper/opening vs top load, I ADORE this setup). Thanks for sharing, I love cobbling together gear sets
I have all the stuff he mentioned but I settled on the MSR Windburner I bought for $130 on sale because I only do day hikes where weight is not an issue. I used it last spring in Northern California in a steady 30 mph wind with no issues.Try that with any sit on top canister stove.
For quite a while I used the old aluminum fosters can with fiberglass cord wrapped around it... but those are quite flimsy. Much lighter than titanium though!
Still using my grandfather's cookset. Used during the war. He walked thousends of kilometers with it in the Soviet Union (and the weight of the pot was the smallest of his problems...). When it breaks, I'll think of a new one. But it probably won't.
I have two kits: 1) 750ml Toaks titanium pot with nest Toaks cup and MSR burner 2) 750ml Boundless Voyage titanium canteen (military style) pot with nesting cup, modified BCB FireDragon folding stand, and Evernew titanium alcohol burner with cross bars. Kit one is for miles, kit 2 is for quiet and relaxing…
Human gear duo has got to be my favorite utensil. Picked it up after watching one of your videos. I had the chance to use it on the PCT last year and it lasted the whole trip 😮
Ive just recently got into backpacking but have been aware of it my entire life because of my dad going when i was young. Hes no longer here to talk about it with but ive always been intrigued by it. Ive watched many of your videos and even bought the flextail zero pump from watching your video. Waited months for it but finally got it recently. I got the Stanley 2 cup kit too because of your video on it. The main thing is that i appreciate you continuing to search for the latest most up to date best equipment out there and i hope you keep it up! I really enjoy your videos and appreciate the time you you put into this 👍
I use (or “borrow “) the spoon from those milkshakes machines you buy at gas station . They are long enough and light weight that I don’t need to buy a $20 titanium spoon from REI. Plus I get the shake
First a question for you: Have you tried the FlipFuel Fuel Transfer Device yet? I'd really like to know what you think of it! Same here Dan, I just cook water. My cookware line up: Toaks 750mm titanium pot. I have to rubber band the lid anyway, the pot gets packed so tight with stuff, even a tight fitting lid would pop off. Toaks long handle, smooth bowl, titanium spoon -- sans carabiner. Pocket Rocket 2 -- w/o Piezo Igniter. I carry a Bic lighter anyway. Then I clip on a small aluminum windbreak. Finally, I wrap my camp rag around the inside of the pot to keep things from rattling around in there. There's not much more annoying than having something clanking inside the pack.
Aluminum typically is similar weight to titanium and aluminum transfers heat much better than titanium. I carry an aluminum 2.5 cup pot with a tight fitting lid and it weighs 5oz
FYI: Another lid that fits (albeit a tad snug) into the Toaks 750 is the lid for the GSI halulite minimalist set. That lid is amazing for sipping coffee. 👌🏻
Thanks for the info Dan, I love the channel and all the videos!!! You have inspired me to get off the couch and get back into the outdoors. You have helped me navigate the overwhelming world of camping gear to make some great choices so that I enjoy my time out on trail. Thanks for reintroducing the great escape of hiking and camping. It’s nice to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and disconnect with the world for a few days!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Great video thank you. Do you buy multiple gas canisters or do you refill your gas canisters. If you refill them, do you have a video that shows how you refill them thanks a lot.
My setup is very similar. I use the BOT 1 liter titanium with the screw-on lid. I wrap the canister in a small bandana to reduce the rattle and prevent rust stains on the pot. (the rim of the canister always seems to rust a little.) Stove is some Ti Pocket Rocket knockoff that has worked fine for several years now. The extra height of the pot fits my flexible spork (no idea on the brand - something I grabbed at Hilton Tent City years ago and it's still in one piece) I also keep some heavy aluminum foil for a wind block and a mini Bic lighter. Why? Always felt the igniter on the stove would fail - never has. But I've used the Bic many times to get a fire started in challenging conditions. Yea, it's a bit more weight, but it's pretty much bomb proof. The bandana allows me to screw the lid on or off on those really windy days were you fear (and sometimes predict) the pot is going to blow off the stove. I'm still looking for a spoon that is long enough to reach into the bottom corners of a mountainhouse pouch without your hand getting icky, but somehow collapse to fit into my pot. It's the one missing link.
The value of a long spoon is keeping our icky hands out of the glorious food we shovel into our mouths. Remember The Oregon Trail constant: you died of dysentery (short sporks).
I love my Ozark trail spoon, too!. It's lighter than titanium and dosnt burn my lips and tongue. Went to buy a few more cuz they are only 1$...can't find them anywhere 😢
I bought the toaks pot and MSR PRD for my partner for Christmas based on your videos. We’re excited to use them this year! Hoping the igniter works better in the Tetons than JetBoil’s🤞.
Good point!
Subway is garbage. Plenty of other better sub spots.
Fact!
The big drawback though is you have to eat subway with their fake bread and questionable cuts.... So Idk lol
I absolutely agree with you, the wind master, is an incredible stove!
and if you choose the Triflex for Windmaster it is much lighter than Pocket Rocket Deluxe.
@@christophmichel3380 cool- I just bought the triflex also because it’s so much easier to pack in a pot can’t wait to try it
@russelljackman1413 is the windmaster same footprint? Making sure it fits in the toaks 750ml.
Try the lid from the Stanley cook kit! Yes, the lid is stainless, but it fits well and the weight difference is minimal. The strainer in the lid is far better than others. Granted, I do replace the plastic lid tab in the middle of the lid with a tiny keyring.

if buddy thinks he can save weight by drinking all his meals he needs a lesson in nutrition. that's pretty much the worst way to go.

I love the stanley pot, it bomb proof, intergrated handle that keeps the lid secure, its aluminum though.
Msr deluxe handles pans of most sizes brilliantly. Easy win.
I really appreciate vids like this!
Getting "Coffee with Carl" vibes
I made a pot lid for my cup out of the lid of a pie can.
It clips on an everything.

So glad i was able to scoop the MSR pocket rocket deluxe up for like $35 on sale, ive had nothing but great experiences with it
Just bought the Evolved 750 pot and BSR stove, perfect set up!
Most fuel efficient setup is Jetboil Stash pot with a Sotowindmaster totaling 7.4 oz. There is a Reddit thread with someone doing testing
Jetboil stash pot with MSR Deluxe Maybe a bit heavier 🤷
my go to is a 2L MSR aluminum pot... i'm only boiling water... but in one pot I can boil enough for 2 cups of coffee, breakfast, and still have some warm water to wash up with.

I'd highly recommend the Soto Windmaster. Absolutely cracking stove.
Thanks, Dan, for correcting your pronunciation of Oregon "Ory-gun".👍
From an Oregonian 🙂
and he still managed to over-correct from "gone" to "gun" but at least he tried. :)

Speaking of which, the lid on the jetboil micromo does not stay on either, which sucks
Vargo bot. Works as an extra water container, cold cooker or standard pot with a lid. A size available for anyone
Fire maple petrel paired with the fire maple green peak stove offers pretty much everything you're looking for here with the exception of being titanium. I'm extremely happy with the setup
I use the same Toaks pot, BRS stove, and rubber band. It's perfect for boiling water. I may add or make a windscreen for it. Cheers

Soto windmaster with the 3 prongs tri-flex weighs 62 grams and its igniter is way better than the pocket rocket deluxe. So, weighs less and is better, that’s a win.
I have two of the spoons love it
I was experimenting with the toak mug and I actually really love the soto setup.
I had this sort of serendipity with my OG GSI Halulite Minimalist lid and a 750ml titanium pot I just got :D it weighs an ounce more than your lid there, but it's a backpacking sippy cup lol and again lol, I weighed my Halulite pot against titanium and went "welp"
so, TIL, locktite the screw holding the igniter on my new Amicus...
I feel like I saw that spoon in the camping section at Walmart tonight while grabbing a new backpack (it has a duffle-style zipper/opening vs top load, I ADORE this setup).
Thanks for sharing, I love cobbling together gear sets
You can buy the soto lid set for the thermo cup cook set for cheap. 2 size lids come in the kit
the titanium pot is lighter than the aluminum pot, but the handles account for the extra weight.
Ive been rocking a $30 walmart kit for years. It’s a bit heavier but never had an issue with the hardware itself
Great idea to reach out to Soto. Respect, Dan.
GSI Minimalist set had this year's ago in halulite aluminum.
I have all the stuff he mentioned but I settled on the MSR Windburner I bought for $130 on sale because I only do day hikes where weight is not an issue. I used it last spring in Northern California in a steady 30 mph wind with no issues.Try that with any sit on top canister stove.
I use the soto amicus stove but the one without the igniter a totes 750 pot and have a mini clipper lighter and love that setup
The Soto lid is available as a replacement from Soto
For quite a while I used the old aluminum fosters can with fiberglass cord wrapped around it... but those are quite flimsy. Much lighter than titanium though!
Still using my grandfather's cookset. Used during the war. He walked thousends of kilometers with it in the Soviet Union (and the weight of the pot was the smallest of his problems...). When it breaks, I'll think of a new one. But it probably won't.
The titanium and aluminum pots weigh the same because of the handles on the Toaks. They also make a 750ml version without the handles that is lighter
I have two kits:
1) 750ml Toaks titanium pot with nest Toaks cup and MSR burner
2) 750ml Boundless Voyage titanium canteen (military style) pot with nesting cup, modified BCB FireDragon folding stand, and Evernew titanium alcohol burner with cross bars.
Kit one is for miles, kit 2 is for quiet and relaxing…
Human gear duo has got to be my favorite utensil. Picked it up after watching one of your videos. I had the chance to use it on the PCT last year and it lasted the whole trip 😮
Jetboil stash. Boils water pretty quick
Love the run and gun vibe today
Trangia makes a canister burner for thier stoves. I love mine.
It is the metal handles Dan
GearSkeptic did a great video series on Backpacking Stove Efficiency reviewing weights sizes stoves/pots/lidded or not ...
The GSI minimalist lid also fits.
First a question for you: Have you tried the FlipFuel Fuel Transfer Device yet? I'd really like to know what you think of it!
Same here Dan, I just cook water. My cookware line up:
Toaks 750mm titanium pot.
I finally picked up a titanium mug three years ago (with handles). Don't care for it. It is sooo hot to drink from. Burns your hand and your lips.
Thanks for sharing this….so cool!! Think I will splurge for the combo!
Grand Master Emmit I like your editing style man!
Thanks Dan!
FYI: Another lid that fits (albeit a tad snug) into the Toaks 750 is the lid for the GSI halulite minimalist set. That lid is amazing for sipping coffee. 👌🏻
Thanks for the info!
Thanks that’s awesome to hear!
Hey Dan- my Jetbboil lid fits on my Toaks 750ml pot…😉
😲
Soto Windmaster is my fav!
Great info on new pots!
I love Soto products. I have that Soto pot and lid. Mine came with a cup with a lid inside it as well.
Nice!
Fire Maple Petrel for the win. Just replaced all my other cook systems.
Fire Msple Petrel pot with Pocket Rocket deluxe & Primud Coffee press. Use aluminum pots when fuel is limited
I love my Ozark trail spoon, too!. It's lighter than titanium and dosnt burn my lips and tongue. Went to buy a few more cuz they are only 1$...can't find them anywhere 😢
Sea to Summit has a very similar spoon for less than 2$ and come in a few colors.
❤😂🎉🎉🎉 Great to see you, Dan!!
They make a repair kit for MSR stoves too. I have needed to use it twice.
Just when I thought all my gear was dialed in and I was done spending money. Thanks Dan.
Don’t forget Dan, no handles on the Soto pot so need to add the weight of the grabber ;-)
I’m with you…handles all the way 😀
I was able to contact Soto and purchased their lid individually for my Toaks 750 pot. Total came to ~$20 shipped to CA :)
How did you contact them? Email or phone call?

My understanding is that titanium is not necessarily lighter than aluminum, it is just stronger than aluminum for the weight.
I bought the toaks pot and MSR PRD for my partner for Christmas based on your videos. We’re excited to use them this year! Hoping the igniter works better in the Tetons than JetBoil’s🤞.
There is always Soto's "Pocket Rocket Deluxe".....the Soto Windmaster. (My personal preference.) :)
My favourite is the Windmaster as well. In Oklahoma the wind is constantly blowing.
