Thanks dana! The one in this video is a 1972. If you have an 84 the procedure is still the same.

Jojojeep evo engines are pretty solid. There are a few things I would try. Starting with a pushrod adjustment. It might be just a wee bit too loose and when the engine heats up and expands it could be just enough to start clacking. That would be my step one.
Second thing I would do is change the oil. These engines use a thick oil. In my evo I run a 50wt oil. If your oil is degraded and heats up it will change the viscosity and could cause the clank.
And if that doesnt do it replace the lifter.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering what type oil you might recommend for an ironhead? I've heard many different types just wondering your opinion. Thanks again

Dana steele the tech manual calls for straight 50 weight conventional oil. I live in florida so when it gets hott I run 60wt. During the "winter" I run 50wt. In a pinch you can use 20w-50 conventional. Some people swear by 20w-50. Some people use synthetic. Dont be scared to try different oils, they will all work. Find out which one your bike responds to the best and use it.
Also little thing I always do when I change oil in an old bike, I cut the oil filter open and look for metal flakes. Sorta lets you know if you have a rebuild coming up.

Marcus I have to disagree with you on the side to side movement, The Harley Manual along with the Clymer's states you do not want any side to side movement you adjust till all the shake is gone and you can barley turn with your fingers.

I'm not putting shims back in. My 72 has shims and they are all worn down and thinned out; my feeling is they only shed metal bits into the engine and that's why harley said not to use them.

Would that keep a motor from starting. I just put in new pistons rings and seals and can't get it to fire. It's getting fuel, I can look down the neck and see it coming from the jet. I've got spark.
