War game suggests Chinese invasion of Taiwan would fail at huge cost to US, China, Taiwan militaries

  • A Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2026 would result in thousands of casualties among Chinese, United States, Taiwanese and Japanese forces, and it would be unlikely to result in a victory for Beijing, according to a prominent independent Washington think tank, which conducted war game simulations of a possible conflict that is preoccupying military and political leaders in Asia and Washington. #CNN #News

Back in ww2 when planning the Normandy beach assault, they prepared ten thousand body bags because they expected that even with supporting bombardment there would heavy casualties. Fortunately due to German defenses being undermanned and the naval bombardment being especially effective, three quarters of the invasion corridors where effectively cleared, aside for Omaha and one other, and less than 1000 casualties were sustained on the first stage of invasion.
High balling the odds seem to work in our favor because it dispells the thought of an easy win and doing foolish things. Otherwise we get moments like black hawk down where overcompetent troops don't even bother to put their plates in their vests and did not bring enough supplies on their backs making a bad situation worse.

This is why China must trend cautiously. They never fought super power vs super power like USA. Usa has two times already fought modern super powers. In wwII usa fought 2 super powers at once as well. China keeps losing border wars with India, which is the closest it gets to fighting a "land" super power. So China has only loss to learn from, a lot to learn, but no winning tactic yet as proven by modern chinese military capabilities and indeed their operational effectiveness on the current active chinese combat zones. You are right, the war games really don't account for human judgement and error, especially on Chinese end, for what I explained before, a supreme lack of winning strategy. If the war game suggests a usa win, then the reality is a nation ending catastrophe for China. Even if you think you can win, is it worth gambling your nation ? We will find out.

This is also assuming china invades Taiwan now.
China knows it is not ready yet.
China knows it is likely to suffer economically, and militarily if it invaded Taiwan in its current state.
Hence why they set the date for at least 2027.
According to the pentagon, china is aiming for 2027 to invade Taiwan.
This is because they wanna prepare militarily and economically for any potential outcomes.
They will expand and build more foreign military bases before 2027, (nobody knows how many) they will also rapidly modernize their military capabilities for a successful invasion.
By then, china would have a nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
China would have a Stealth bomber (which is able to reach the United States territory) and it's military would have far more reach, and way more capabilities than it currently does now.
      This will determine the outcome.
I wish they would have added these in the equation and done the war games.
It certainly would have had a significant difference.
But regardless, a real war will always be different.

Something is afoot in China - something that the Chinese themselves don’t seem to know - or can control. In such dangerously ambivalent situations it’s better to error on the side of readiness - and we’re not ready. Whatever is brewing in China will likely start in Taiwan, so it’s prudent that we help them prepare. How and to what extent, we don’t fully know. But we’d better do more than just think about it - which might be all Gen. Mike Minihan is saying.

  • @Scar626
    @Scar626 Год назад +7

2:46 - That doesn't always seem to be true.
I mean clearly recently (like the Ukraine - Russia war) we've seen if a nation state sees a risk to its survival and it weighs those two options. That being war vs no war, it will sometimes risk going to war.
Deterrence will only get you so far, until it runs into that calculus -> Either our nation disintegrates due to lack of action or also if we do take action. Sometimes they take the latter if the risk seems to have a greater chance at survival.
That is why that saying "If you want peace, prepare for war" is so fickle, because if you also want war, you prepare for war. The Cuban missile crisis was the greatest example of doing compromises to achieve and favorable outcome.

But your missing my point, those losts are why we don’t underestimate our enemies.
