My 2013 MacBook Pro after installing the OS requires the USB stick to be plugged in when turning on or else without it, it cannot boot. How I can make it boot without the USB stick?

Thanks and this has breathed new life into my 2014 MacBook Pro. However, I almost killed it with the macOS Sonoma 14.1 update. To all, make sure that you wait for the OpenCore Legacy Patcher update and run that first. Otherwise, you might be unable to reboot your Mac after a macOS update. Thank God I still had my USB boot flash drive and could recover. Thanks again for the tip, and God bless
You are a man. I successfully installed Sonoma 14.2.1 on my MacBook pro mid 2012. It's fast and working perfectly. I increased my Ram to 16gb and changed hdd to 512gb ssd hard-drive. Thank you!!!
Installed the latest software pack no problem to my mid-2014 iMac after upgrading to an SSD hard drive and its running faster than ever with the latest software. Thanks for the easy installation guide. You are amazing!
I did this a few days ago to my old 15" MacBook Pro Retina, now I have it running in my garage running as a Server with a couple DAS drives in RAID holding my Lightroom photo library and a couple external SSDs for macOS backups and another for holding movies for streaming. My DAS with HDDs is a bit loud, so I"m glad it now sits in my garage instead of my desk in the house. I wish I would have built my home server a lot sooner since my old MBP was just sitting in a drawer since I upgraded to an M1 Pro MBP.
If I could pick, I'd totally go for a 13inch MBA M2 in silver. My old laptop was a 2013 15inch Macbook Pro and it just crapped out on me. The new MBA seems like the bomb - it's affordable, speedy, and easy to carry around.
I have the late 2011 13' MBP. Running a patched Catalina. It's running slightly better than officially supported High Sierra but let me tell you this, get the 2012 model, it makes a difference from a Metal support for newer Mac OS versions, if running Linux it doesn't really matter though, and USB 3.0 is a god send compared to USB 2.0 so from a practical standpoint that'll make a huge difference if you're the kind of person who wants to use a computer like this to do basic browsing and managing data back ups on external storage.
I have a 2012 MBP and it runs perfectly. it actually surprises me everyday. the body is out of style, with the CD drive and Mini display port (which i bought an adapter that connects to hdmi and works like a charm)
@@newmanh I disagree, the body is most definitely not out of style, if Apple added back some display bezels to their line up they'd end up looking like a very mild variation of the OG unibody design. But yes, their port selection was a bit outdated even back then, HDMI was already a well established standard by the start of the decade and Apple used to have a history of pushing out technological features ahead of others, and Firewire became obsolete the moment the USB 3.0 standard came out. CDs were still common and would still be at least mildly relevant for a few more years if the market hadn't fallen into sucking Apple's ding dong every time their took a dump. With that said, at this point in time, a fully upgraded non retina MBP is quite usable, the 15 and 17 inch ones even more so, and I will gladly keep on trucking with it for as long as Mac OS and eventually only Linux supports it to watch cat videos.
If I had a choice, I'd love to get a 13inch MBA M2 in silver. My old laptop was a 2013 15inch Macbook Pro and it recently got broken. I think the new MBA is the best in terms of price, performance, and portability. By the way, love this new video on installing Mac OS Sonoma on unsupported Macs! Keep the news coming!
Thank you for your easy to follow guide! I’ve managed to install Sonoma on a 2015 MacBook Pro, I’m well chuffed that I managed it myself! 😊 Thank you 😊.
Hey. Congratulations on your install. I'm about to do it but I had a question. You know how he patched the system to run without the USB with open core, and rebooted; now although he didn't hold the option key, it still showed a disk drive, but then automatically booted. My qeustion is, will that show every time, or does it directly boot to the apple screen, like usual? Thanks
Just upgraded my early 2017 i7 MacBook Pro which has a 250GB SSD and 16GB Ram and all went smoothly. Will probably do a fresh install when we get the final release of Sonoma. Thanks Matt for a very informative video.
Great! I am doing this on my 2012 mac mini base model but spinning hd still it has 8gb at least so it should be fine. It is on mojave right now. I will do an update if it works okay. I still have the backup bootable mojave stick just incase if not.

I bought a mid 2012 MacBook Pro I7. I'm upgrading to a 1tb SSD, and maxing out the ram we with 16gb. After watching this vid, I think Ventura might be the better OS option between the two. Thank you for the info!
PLEASE READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL, as it can save your time, effort, and good mood: the new features in Sonoma are not worth risking a stable OS. The new unsupported OS causes a number of issues: computer freezes in shell mode connected to an external monitor, loss of internet connectivity, inability to print your PDF files and so on. As of today, Apple still has not fixed some of them. Most importantly, the patch will interfere with your Mac’s SIP (System Integrity Protection) in order to force install Sonoma. This will take away your ability to reset NVRAM and SMC and will prevent you from TimeMachine restores because TimeMachine will not be able to verify that your system has not been compromised. To uninstall this patch, you will have to re-install your previous OS and then, hopefully, be able to use TimeMachine to restore everything.
I just bought a 2014 Mac mini with 8gigs and 512 ssd on ebay for $90. It says it comes with Monterrey. After reading your comment would it be better to stay with Monterrey? I bought this just to try Mac and use for homeschooling my kids.

Thanks for this . I installed Sonoma to my 2017 iMac 5k 27" (iMac 18,3) took about 1/2 hour. The only issue was that when you eventually copy to the internal drive, I selected the 3Tb HDD instead of the 312Gb SDD ... but I just rebooted from the external SSD and OpenCore took me through the copy process again, letting me choose the SSD drive. Seems slow to boot up even so ! Otherwise, everything seems to work ok ! Thanks again for this video, it's really good! Update: spoke too soon. It failed and a reboot went to hell . Spent last 2 days wiping the HD and trying to reinstall Ventura. Yes, I backed up to Time Machine but it raises a hardware error when I try to reinstall. Looks like the HD got portioned or corrupted by the patch … currently shows 2.5 hours left to install. Fingers crossed
I upgraded to Sonoma on my 2017 MacBook Pro yesterday and the OS works smoothly. However, all of my registered fingerprints were deleted from the system, and when I tried to add them, I was asked to enter my password, it didn't matter how many times I tried, the system didn't seem to accept it. So Sonoma works great, however, Touch ID was gone for me. I also tried to boot it on "safe mode" but it got stuck, and couldn't troubleshoot the error. I'll give it a couple of days, and if it doesn't work, I'll go back to Ventura. Thank you for your help on the process!
In OpenCore Legacy patcher notes it clearly states that T1 chip support for the fingerprint functionality is not working at the time, so that was expected. I advise to first read thoroughly all documentation and release notes before jumping to use OCLP directly.
I have the 2011 27inch running Sonoma it work so far. I did what he did. but I make a partition for Sonoma and I still had my support Os out the box running on this iMac that is High Sierra. If you make a extra partition and nothing works you can go and delete the partition and still keep your Os and still have a working computer. then you can try the other 3 Os and see if they work for you. By following the same steps. Use open core 1.0.1
Hi Matt, Thank you for the video, its a life saver. Quick question, not that the USB is setup, does that mean i can use it again and again? or do i need to go through the whole process again?
Great vid, it worked-thank you! One question : I updated my 2011 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 imac to ventura 13.6 and now I get an update option for Sonoma. Is it safe to use that update now, or do I have to go through the all process with USB stick again to update?
Hi Matt, I'm sure this is a simple issue. When i boot into the EFI and chose the install of the MacOS (Ventura) i can't find a why to get to the MacOS utilities, i'm stuck on the MacOS Recovery screen. This means i can't chose the drive i want to install to. Hope you can help i'm on an early 2013 Macbook Pro
Hi, very amazing tutorial - I am seriously thinking about upgrading my MacBook Air 2017 to at least to Ventura - it is sad that having Monterey I cannot download Keynote :( But I have limited internet data transfer - will 20 gb of internet be enough to do whole process ?
21:11 I need help, I never make it past this part and I just get stuck a on black apple loading bar screen that never finishes. been at this multiple nights now.
I figured my 2011 IMac would be too slow to get very far. Using this tool, it installed and ran Big Sur great with no no noticable lag. I got greedy and tried to jump all the way to Ventura, and it runs, but it dogs a lot, and RUclips video is choppy as hell. I'm gonna try to split the difference, reinstall High Sierra and use OpenCore to install Monterey. I think if someone had a 2011 and did a GPU upgrade, Ventura may run well.
Hi Matt thanks for your video, its great. I've got a 2012 27 inch Mac running on Catalina. I've got it running perfectly on a Samsung external SSD. My question is can I do the open legacy patcher upgrade to my external ssd, this will mean the internal hardrive is running on Catalina still. (I've got no intention running the old hard drive, its too slow, the samsung external ssd works great). Thanks Phil
Hi Matt, I am new to your page but followed your instruction in updating my iMac late 2013 to Ventura OS and it has been working well. My mac keeps telling me to update to Sonoma, Is that something that I can now do? Please let me know, Thanks. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Hi! Great video thank you. When I reboot I only get the EFI boot yellow drive, not the black. Oncr I click on it, it just restarts and bring me back to the regular startup page. I've tried to do the open core isntall three times following step by step, but no luck. I am using an imac 2012 16gb. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
Thank you making this video to help many like me. I am using Macbook pro i7 mid 2012 wit 16gn of ram and and 256gb of ssd. I have been trying to follow all the step you mentioned but my sonoma installation get stuck on the screen which says "less than a minute remaining..." and stays like this for days. Tried many times re booking, smc clearance, nvram sett luck, first aid from mac utility etc but lucky Any solution will be much appreciated. Thank you again
To those who are in doubt to install, I won't recommend at the moment because it is quite buggy on older systems also wifi & bluetooth not working and pointer is moving so slow. It is better to wait for some more time to get the stable version. (I am using MacBook Air 2017 model)
I followed your guide exactly and now I’ve been stuck on this page for nearly 24 hours asking me to select a disk to install the OS on and the flash drive says it’s locked and the SSD still says it’s encrypting. I can go back like one page, but I can’t go any further.
What about the performance on those old MacBooks with this OS? I made something similar to may MacBook Pro late 2011 with MacOS CATALINA (becausa I wanted to have DARK MODE :) ). Must say that I already updated my MacBook to 16Gb of RAM. Just to know if it's worth to jump to a different MacOS or keep on the actual one.
I’ve got a base mid 2014 15 inch MacBook Pro that could probably run Sonoma with its 16 GB of ram and 256 GB SSD. My only question is whether or not it’s safe to install. And by that I mean if the developer is a trusted one and not the type to install malware, or any sort of monitoring programs.
My iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) is stuck at Big Sur. I'd be happy to push it beyond Big Sur all the way to Sonoma, but I am wondering if there is a sweet spot between MacOS 11 and 14 for my particular iMac? So officially MacOS 11 is where Apple support for my iMac stops, but at 11 (sorry, SpinalTap) my iMac doesn't keep up with Apple Home (for my security cams, etc.) or other apps/features. But maybe Sonoma is too greedy. How would I know? Is there a chart out there?
16GB is the limit of the non retina 13 inch Macbook Pros, at least the 2011 and 2012 year models. NOT 8GB and at this point it's always better to have a little extra.
@@sllick I have a spares machine with stock 4GB of RAM, it's painfully slow. My rebuilt machine is all maxed out and as long as it's not running a few RUclips pages at once it's great BUT if it is not fun.

thanks so much, my 12years old macbook pro is usable again!
Thank you so much for this tutorial 👍
i was on ventura and tried to update in settings , but now when i reboot my macbook pro, stuck only a loading apple screen , please help
Hi, very amazing tutorial - I am seriously thinking about upgrading my MacBook Air 2017 to at least to Ventura - it is sad that having Monterey I cannot download Keynote :(
But I have limited internet data transfer - will 20 gb of internet be enough to do whole process ?
Unfortunately I got rid of my old iMac 2017 so well done I have been waiting for this video from you what about the screen savers
21:11 I need help, I never make it past this part and I just get stuck a on black apple loading bar screen that never finishes. been at this multiple nights now.
mid 2012 15 inch macbook pro
I have the same one and I’m
Thinkinh of doing it
I figured my 2011 IMac would be too slow to get very far.
I have a 2012 MBP with an i7, ssd and 16gigs of Ram. So I should be good right?
How would you feel about downloading it on a 2013 Mac Pro the trashcan?
What will happen when an update appears? Will the OpenCore patcher be removed by the update?
Bro how to fix touch id on 2017 macbook pro after installing sonoma touch id not working
Thanks a lot ❤❤ it helped a lot.
Do you have to use the usb?
Thank you making this video to help many like me.
I am using Macbook pro i7 mid 2012 wit 16gn of ram and and 256gb of ssd. I have been trying to follow all the step you mentioned but my sonoma installation get stuck on the screen which says "less than a minute remaining..." and stays like this for days. Tried many times re booking, smc clearance, nvram sett luck, first aid from mac utility etc but lucky
Any solution will be much appreciated.
Thank you again
Have you tried removing your wireless card? Also, you can make sure no Wi-Fi connection is on. You can patch those after install.
2012 Mini (I7 16gb). Booted and installed on ssd, but stuck on Apple screen. Any suggestions?
working fine here, thanks
Mac mini 2011 server with 16GB RAM, SSD, i7... It's working thanks
To those who are in doubt to install, I won't recommend at the moment because it is quite buggy on older systems also wifi & bluetooth not working and pointer is moving so slow. It is better to wait for some more time to get the stable version. (I am using MacBook Air 2017 model)
can you uninstall and go back to ventura?
@@babylongardens Yes, that's what I did. I have downgraded to Ventura back
Am on late 2012 pro and on catalina Os, my laptop suddenly start slowing down and takes tons of time to load 😢😢
Nice video!
I have a 2012 macbook pro with ssd and 8 gb ram. Which OS would you recommend me to install for the best app compatibility and best performance.
Will this work on a MBP 2016 with touchbar?
Thanks appreciated Lifr Saver 🎉🎉
I’ll be using a MacBook Air 2017 from what he said at the beginning I should be fine because it’s newer then the pro
Are you able to receive texts and do facetime etc, unlock with apple watch? They mentioned a lot of the continuation features are broken.
Aaah! The download link is no longer on the Github page!
ok let say for OS everything ok, but the answer is how about plugin or app which is request metal GPU? still can install and use it or not?
Been banging my head for days with the usual Open Core and it doesn't work ...hope this SPECIAL version works it out.. thanks in advance
finally it went through!! You're a rock star!
Can I use the same usb installer on different type Mac’s like my 2014 Mac mini and 2013 Mac Pro or do they need their own ?
16GB is the limit of the non retina 13 inch Macbook Pros, at least the 2011 and 2012 year models. NOT 8GB and at this point it's always better to have a little extra.
I run a 2012 with 16GB RAM and it runs perfectly
Mine has 4GB of ram 😭😭😭 will it work?
@@sllick I have a spares machine with stock 4GB of RAM, it's painfully slow.
My rebuilt machine is all maxed out and as long as it's not running a few RUclips pages at once it's great BUT if it is not fun.
@@sllickdepending on the year. If it’s a 2010 or earlier, it might not work.
@@hubertmendel4587 lmao I’m trying it on a 2009 iMac
Edit: did not work
I am looking forward to buy the iPad Pro 11 inch,if the decide the make it out of titanium, this decreasing the weight
What if I choose to install Sonoma after rebooting and pressing cntrl and when I choose to install Sonoma it’s loading for some time and then it’s crossed circle
Hi , if it goes wrong, how you must Go back ? to your original version or previous ? Thx.
I have a 2012 MBP with 2.5ghz dual core i5, 256g SSD, and 16gb RAM. What would be the most recent OS that you'd say runs well, isn't buggy, and reasonably quickly on a machine with those specs?
in video there it is your mac
but to lag i think it will small
test it) i have it too but i have hdd and in 1 week i will upgrade to ssd
My Macbook mid 2012 has the same specs (but I have a 512 SSD). Yesterday I upgraded it to Ventura. It works totally fine, but I have this feeling, that it‘s kind of noisy. I will try it out for some days now and share my experience with you. Or have you already tried it and can tell me something about it?
@@Oktoblues I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Thanks for what you've already said. That's enough that I think I'll give it a go once I look up a few videos on doing the install. I'd love to hear your feedback after you use it more!
When it notifies you of new updates, can you click on the update for the latest software or will it crash your computer?
Really helped
yeah but hows the performance? its like taking windeows 10 and forcing the install on a win XP dated machine. like is it ecen good? i doubt. show it as a daily driver and give is teh results
just installed on my late 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, works well, only my fingerprint don't work,
Update? I have the same machine
What a disaster. I tried this and got it installed. Only to not have Bluetooth so could not use my mouse or keyboard. Them spent the rest of the day, erasing reinstalling Ventura and Time Machine back ups. Thank god for Time Machine back ups!!
Excellent
thank you matt!
Does GPTK work with this then? Or do you need a silicon cpu?
Hi Matt, I am dual booting my 2015 mb pro with windows 10, can I use this to update my system?
