@@MoviesWithMarty It was my pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you react to a life changing film for me.
I saw it on HBO in 1982 at 7 years old.

This has been one of my favorite films since I saw it as a child.
I personally think the opening monologue is one of the best bits of exposition to create the feel of a world in any movie.
This one feels rooted in a sense of reality whereas Fury Road is an over the top/magical reality that takes me out of the story.

    • @tommc3622

      Fury Road is pure cinema.
      It's storytelling with motion.
      It's a masterpiece.
However; Mad Max 2 feels like a documentary. It feels REAL.
The Road Warrior will always be the best in the franchise IMHO.

  • @richardb6260
    @richardb6260 Год назад +6

The desert festival is called Burning Man.
This is one of my favorite action films. It's still the best Mad Max film IMO. Sure, Fury Road is great. But this film has a rawness that suits the setting that Fury Road's big budget slickness lacks.
George Miller said that he only got about 30% of what he wanted on the screen with the first film. He was actually surprised it was such a big hit. With Mad Max 2, he said he got over 80% of what he wanted on the screen.
For an earlier post-apocalyptic film that I think influenced the look of this film, check out A Boy and His Dog from 1975. It's based on an award winning story by Harlan Ellison and starring Don Johnson.
BTW, they would have to get the film developed before they could view the dailies. It's unlikely they would have developing facilities on location.

As a child of the 70's-80's, I CANNOT explain how powerful and yet PROPHETIC the opening of this movie was. Not just as a simple "iconic opening to an action film", but something that we could SEE happening in our life times. Now (in my early 50's) this opening STILL rings far more "true" than any current effort to copy it because of the fact that it IS so iconic, that attempting to "match it" feels too much like a "rip off" to be taken seriously.

@@drewpaupanekis4710 -- Well, I can accept the Xenophobic part due to having the Xenomorph from Alien and Aliens scaring us half to death, so the Xeno part makes sense.
As far as homophobic? I don't really think that we cared one way or another. We just didn't want it constantly shoved into our face like it was some sort of badge of honor. Which could be said about a lot of things regarding children from the 70's-80's. From your politics to your religion, as long as it wasn't constantly shoved in our faces, told we had NO CHOICE about accepting it as a part of OUR lives, and it wasn't used as a club over our heads to dictate how we were supposed to behave and act in public, we were cool with it. Once it became your weapon of choice to inflict your beliefs onto us without ANY questions being allowed to get asked, we had a problem with it.
And probably why I still have real problems today when someone uses some kind of "identity based on lifestyle" as their club and shield to dictate how I am supposed to live my life, and can't ask questions without being labeled and "ist", "phobe" or "anti-". Well, that was just due to my formative years being spent by basically everyone around me telling me that their way of life was the "right way" and there was never any room for "doubt or questions", that I came to resent that form of "moral authority" over me.

I only recently discovered that George Miller had originally wanted the first Mad Max to take place in a more post-apocalyptic environment. Frankly, though, I think the pre-apocalyptic environment of the first movie really contributes both to the first movie's story and to the franchise. Seeing the fall of civilization reflected in the fall of one man, and the fall of one man reflected in the fall of civilization, seeing the last breath of the familiar world before being led into the next world, I think it just gave the whole thing more depth.

The director George Miller has said that only the first 3 films are related. The new one is a complete reboot.
They're not in a nuclear wasteland they're just in the outback. Like the dying old man says in the opening narration "He wondered off into the wasteland." Which we assume most people did to survive once the cities and populated zones became too dangerous. Personally, I like to imagine that Fifi and the cops from the first film are still there fighting off gangs!)
BTW, I loved the design of the various marauders in this film; there's vigilante police officers like Max, guys that look like ex-soldiers, then there's the whole weird s&m slave/master thing going on on between some of them... Kind of like the Germanic barbarians of the Dark Ages mixed with 80s rock culture, lol. Definitely unique.

The Mad Max saga has some very curious things that set it apart from other types of sagas.
    1. The continuity between movies is somewhat vague and it doesn't matter too much.
    2. The secondary characters and villains are more interesting than Max himself. They even have their own arcs and evolutions.
    3. The main character is dragged into situations where he is not the protagonist (Furiosa's plan in Fury Road or in this movie the escape of the guys from the refinery)
    4. It has a very unique aesthetic that has set precedents and influences other works.
    5. It has a somewhat pessimistic vision of the human condition in general, but more positive in particular.
and it is curious when watching this movie, how much of them is maintained in the new Fury Road and Furiosa saga.

the way to look at how things get more and more post apocalyptical is the amount of time that passes, the longer they live in this wasteland the worse it gets. They said that the amount of time between Thunderdome and Fury Road is the same as real world time that passed. This is why Fury Road is to far removed from where the first Mad Max took place.

Actually, apart from the first film, they are all stories from deep time. As such, details get a bit fuzzy. These are old memories and tales.
They are fables of the legendary "Max" as told from the perspectives of 3 great societies that rose from the ashes as a direct result of interacting with him:
      The Great Northern Tribe,
      The peoples that repopulate Sydney,
And the people of The Citidel.
      ...
Not sure how the upcoming "Furiosa" will fit in, but I'm guessing (like Fury Road) it will be told from the perspective of a "History Man".

Sucks we didnt get Mel Gibson in the 4th Mad Max movie that was originally supposed to be made in 2001 before it got canceled. Fury Road was good but i didn't buy Tom Hardy as Max. Some characters just shouldn't be recast and Max Rockatansky is one of those characters.

Fury road has nothing to do with 1,2, and 3 it's a crappy attempt to redo 12:25

Yeah, it seems none of them are linked to be fair. I didn't realise that after only this one, although after 3 I very much realise this. Thank you though, personally I much prefer these original films to the newer one. I hope you're well Sean! Thanks for watching

This is by far the best mad max even fury road was going to be filmed in Aus however it rain and was shit in Namibia still decent but nothing comes close to 2nd beyond thunder dome was the worst by a mile so crap only action was when master blaster fought max the rest was a snooze fest.

It was interesting to hear a pov of someone who saw the reboot (Fury Road) first. I am one of those old Mad Max fans who is very dismissive of the current gen cartoony surreal CGI stuff in Fury Road, but I guess its not that bad to have a version for everyone.

It was like 90% practical effects.
Most of the CGI was used to clean it up, erase wires, or tracks from previous shots, etc.

@@ericisprobablyfullofshit7797 Not even close mate. How can you not distinguish a CGI from a practical effect? And practical effects it did have weren't simply cables and tracks being erased,, no sir - EVERY stunt was heavily embellished by CGI, added debris, loads of, additional vehicles in action not just somewhere in background, additional people, CGI stuntmen - in action, most explosions etc. Almost every background or foreground was fake. I'm not even getting into the sandstorm Marvel level bs. It was made for 3D remember that. EVERY SINGLE stunt was CGI-ised to oblivion, outside the jarring Instagram filter on top of it all. So the fact it did have many practical stunts that were then completely overwhelmed with CG is not really defending the film mate...It looked as fake as 300.

Whatever you want to say, Fury Road's a better movie than the worthless Thunderdome.

@@Carandini We'll never know what Beyond Thunderdome could've been if it wasn't for a tragic death of a producer B.Kennedy, and subsequent withdrawal of G.Miller. Also, since Fury Road ''borrows'' from it so heavily, I'm surprised you'd be that harsh. Also, even though it goes without saying, non CGI race from the end of Thunderdome is miles ahead that orange MTV video from 2015.

Tom Hardy was not the right choice for Mad Max. Fury road was a bloated, creepy, Hollywoodized mess. Everything was over the top and Hugh Keys-Byrne deserved to play a better villain. I just sat there in the theater looking like I’m smelling bad fish.

It was only marketed as The Road Warrior and most US audiences hadn’t heard of the first one.
IMHO it’s the best of the series.

I don't know about what most Americans saw, but I saw Mad Max in theaters.
They'd dubbed all the voices with American accents.
If you ever get a chance to see that version it's worth it just for how weird it sounds. 😅
