  • 7.3 Powerstroke Turbo Blanket. Does a Turbo blanket reduce turbo lag on a 7.3 Powerstroke? The answer is... well maybe...

From what I read. There are two benefits of the blanket.
It moves the power curve to the left of chart. So, if peak horsepower is 250 at 1800 RPM, then the blanket would give you 250 at 1700 RPM.
Secondly, the engine compartment would be a few degrees cooler.
If I can get a blanket on EBay for $30 I might do it.

That definitely makes sense, and by definition moving the peak HP point towards lower RPM would increase torque output as well. I think part of the reason why there wasn't a huge improvement that I saw was due in part to the fact that the Garrett TP38 with the 1.15 A/R exhaust housing is so laggy to begin with. Additionally, with the larger A/R also comes with a greater ratio of internal volume to external surface area. In other words, there's less surface area for the heat to transfer out of relative to the exhaust inside the volume of the turbine housing. The amount of heat lost to the engine bay may not have been that bad to begin with. The larger A/R also lowers in turbine exhaust velocity, so with the lower velocity, there's a slower rate for heat transfer to occur anyway. The Cummins engines generally run turbos with much smaller A/R turbine housings which may be one of the reasons they see more benefit to a turbo blanket. I don't know for sure, I think you'd be better off saving up for a smaller A/R exhaust housing for the Turbo. I'm planning to rework the exhaust insulation I put on in this video, maybe make something a little cleaner and more effective. There is some potential with exhaust insulation, at least in theory. Thanks for the input!

Power Driven Diesel did a dyno test with a blanket. They found a 2 second reduction in spool time. A blanket isn't a power mod it's for efficiency and heat reduction. A fully insulated system (manifold, turbo, downpipe) is where you'll see the most benefit.

I definitely agree with you. The best thing would be to insulate everything pre-turbo, and maybe after turbo as well? At least in theory, it would give the truck more low end power. A 2 second quicker spool, (which I unfortunately didn't see :( darn) would give the engine more boost and allow the ECM to dump in more fuel as well. At the very least keeping the heat in the manifolds and out of the engine bay would improve the efficiency of the system like you said, but with the same flowrate as before, that would increase the overall output of the turbo. You could argue the extra boost helps drive the pistons down on the intake stroke, though I think that affect is near negligible. Do you think it would be worth it to try insulating the down pipe as well?

@@Rnddiesel ThermalZero makes the highest quality and most affordable blankets and wraps. Another great solution would be to intercool the system as the air charge on a nonintercooled diesel must be insanely hot.

@@xc8487 It would be good to look into some Thermal Zero products, thanks! I'm already way ahead of you on the intercooler, I've had one for about a year now! I ran the calculations one time, and at 20 psi boost, the temperature could exceed 250 *F or something like that. Heck boiling water is cooler!

IMO I don’t think any mod can compare, dollar to dollar, with the gains in power, expandability and versatility of a chip. A Chip even becomes more effective with adding other mods like injectors, a valve body, etc. opens up even more power! it’s the backbone or platform that connects everything in the diesel

    • @Rnddiesel

I'll second that! It's really amazing all that can be done with engine tuning. I don't know if you've looked into what all goes into it, but the amount of parameters and things you need to consider to write good tunes is mind boggling. The only downside really is that you're pushing the engine past its original design point, and the poor old e4od for that matter. After a chip, mods start getting expensive really quick though. Heck new injectors, are over $1k, transmission to handle the power, $5k, turbo to clean things up, another $1k, and it just keeps going!

Rnddiesel I haven’t looked into it but your an intelligent person and I would enjoy a video on tuning parameters you mentioned. I just bought my 95 OBS 7.3 back in mid-feb. Been absorbing knowledge and building up my truck since I got her. Before I purchased her I knew nada about diesel. You, 928 obs and living on wheels have been feeding my diesel “know-how” craving.
I think mods become an obsession! Hence the naming in Stages, 1-2-3, each stage deepen of that obsession.

@@jeremykeith3152 Well a tuning video would be great! That is something I'll have to start looking more into. It's awesome that you're going out and learning more about your truck. Most folks simply drive their vehicles until the wheels fall off. Like you I still do research and look to learn more. Heck I was so obsessed with getting a 7.3, that most of what I know about 7.3's and Diesels in general, I learned before I even got one. You are indeed right, mods become an obsession! There's a certain point at which you realize you could make the truck suit your needs better than it would have in stock form. It does come at a cost though, and if you aren't careful you can mess up the truck real quick! I'm glad you are finding value in my channel, it's what I set out to do. We aren't 'drivers' per say, rather we are 'operators!'

The turbo blanket helps keep the compressor side cooler, a big help for non intercooled powerstrokes...it also doesn't help that you didn't use a real turbo blanket

Thank you! Well I ended up putting a standard TS6 chip in my truck, of course it's been re-tuned by Full Force Diesel to run the 160cc/00 injectors. I really only picked it because it's the cheapest option, and it looks the cleanest. The Hydra chip is really convenient, but it looks kind of goofy. Are you running a chip in your truck?

Being OBD 2 (1996) you’ve got more options. Then the 94-95. I have TS 6 chip with my 95. Cheap (eBay $194 free ship) and easy to install.
