I suffered with that for years as well (hand path moving down the target line at and after impact). This has been a light bulb moment for me and clearing up a concept (swinging left) that I have tried to understand and do for many, many years! Chris’s explanation is like the missing piece in the puzzle.
@@ChrisRyanGolf Thank so much, Chris, for this explanation of what the hand path has to do to “swing left”. I’ve struggled with a hand path that was mainly swinging down the target line at and after impact. None of the instructors I went to could help me understand the “swing left” idea. They mainly focused on swinging the clubhead left which is just a bad idea. Once I understood this video, everything just fell into place, from my backswing to the follow thru. You’re an amazing teacher who’s able to convey difficult concepts into simple ideas that are easy to follow. Love your content and instruction. You’re THE best, Chris!!! 😁👍👏
Just got back from the range after watching this video earlier today. Honestly it was almost like a eureka moment! I always felt like I was trying to “muscle” the club to get distance, this felt so much fluid. Thanks Chris! By the the best concept coaching and explanation as always!
This one is priceless! I always heard about slingshot the club but nobody come close to explain exactly how it is done. You demonstrate first the key concept and then detailing the path of the butt end which is the critical piece. Amazing!
Chris, this is a game changer. Letting the grip end go left also make you fold your left elbow in the follow through. Tried it and stick with it. A bi-product is a better balance in the finish as your arms and club end up more to the left and thereby counter-weight your body’s lateral bend through impact and beyond. Thank you!
Literally just watched the video, went to the range and genuinely, genuinely never hit ball better or further. Ive been trying everything and this nailed it. i feel compelled to comment because its made such a distance. No exaggeration when i say it added 30 yards to my 5 iron. A true Eureka moment
I know this video is a couple of years old but I just wanted to let you know it is the best explanation of how to use the club in the golf swing on you tube for me. It has worked and once I learned this concept my body adjusts accordingly with everything falling into place. I have heard the same thing talked about in several books, but your on the ground demonstration was the key I needed. Pete Cowen said exactly the same thing talking physics and keeping loft on the club. Your demonstration was far superior for my understanding. Thank you! Jeff
I've been watching loads of other experts but not ONE has ever explained this. I was "I thought hitting balls solid but 8 iron only going 110 yards at best" but as soon as i tried this amazing move the yards shot up. Can't thank you enough Chris
Wow this was so helpful. Sometimes you just need to hear something said the right way for it to click. Watched this and then went and hit a few balls into the net. Noticed a difference right away. Makes me think of "cracking the whip" with a bunch of kids on roller skates... for some reason that just worked for me.
I NEED an in person lesson from you, I have been watching your videos through lockdown and I'm now playing the best golf I have ever played. Somehow I cant grasp instructions with certain termanologies. The way you teach with feelings and visuals is perfect for me!
Thank you. Effortless power. I've seen this before. It was called the folding point. Cowan calls it the twist down, but this is the most logical explanation for me. Grateful for the instruction & explanation.
Thank you for this swing concept. One of the easiest tips I've ever put into my swing and seen immediate results with the very first swing. I've heard that move generally described before but it's never clicked until you laid it out on the ground with your Club. 👍
Just tried this on a lovely evening on an empty practice area. Literally transformative! I'd be quite optimistic about tomorrow's comp if it wasn't for the 4 hole shelf life that all RUclips clips have... Thanks anyway, always enjoy your stuff.
Best explanation of motion of grip and club. I have studied your article in top golfer magazine. With this video it all becomes very Clear Thank you and well done.
Chris, this is a revelation as l have received lessons in the past with an emphasis on ‘ the left pocket’ but never had the importance explained. This is now my go to drill, and in time l will be hitting better more consistent shots. Thank you!
Simply fabulous, lucid and brilliant instruction. I've never heard things like this explained before. I'm 72 years old. Wish I'd had known these moves at 15.
Your instruction is so relatable and easy to understand! Thank you! I can actually listen to you and then apply what I hear to a golf swing! Wish you were local!! Thank you and keep up the good work! Between you and Rick Shiels golf, I have Dropped 11 strokes off my game! Thanks!
I think you did another video similar to this one which was also really good. In that video you showed that when the butt end of the club moves up at the end of the swing it similarly forces the head end of the club down ... sort of an equal but opposite reaction. You explain these concepts really well ... thank you.
Chris for me this is the most enlightening video about the golf swing. I have played golf for 20 years and have always had trouble clearing my left hip. Today I went direct to the course with no practice session and my only swing thought was your video. I shot 5 under my handicap and my partners told me "it looked like effortless golf". Thanks Chris you are the best in my books.
Thanks very much. Your methods are so easy to understand. This video and the ones on trail arm have really helped me solidify a swing change I've been working for some time.
Chris, bravo for a great explanation and demonstration of "swinging left". So few golfers understand this technique. I'd also add that this is not only more powerful, it reduces shot dispersion, too.
This is Epic Chris. I have been trying to implement this from a previous video of yours. When you get it right it is quite dramatic the increase in club head speed, but of course hard to implement consistently for the time being, after thousands of swings with the mistaken belief that the hand path should mirror the intended club head path through to impact. What would be useful is a follow up video covering the transition from a short chip working up to a full swing with regards what the hand path should be as the shot length increases.
Really good explanation - particularly the demo with the club on the ground. This is something I've been trying to understand recently, so this video is good timing as far as I am concerned.
Chris are the upward and inward direction of the hands on the grip entirely passive and the result of leg and body movement as opposed to active recruitment of the left shoulder pulling the grip up? In other words is the action purely a body release. Many thanks for an excellent video.
awesome. This clarifies what I have been working the last few weeks. The delivery position is along the swing plane (30 degrees off the target line) not the target line. Hitting first with the butt/handle allows for the centrifugal pendular whip, from the hyperextended trail wrist (hyperextended wrist ready for the throwing motion). I like to slam my trail shoulder (my shoulder rotation is along the target line) on impact to release the club head after the impact. Thanks for the video
Hi Chris not seen this drill before but looks great I watch a lot of golf & thought about the distance pros produce with minimal effort makes sense with this video it was was well put across by yourself will definitely look at this when I next go & practice keep up the good work 👍
I liked this video, and could you relate this movement to deceleration of the body parts as you come into impact? Left foot pressure pushing away, opening the hips and the shoulders pulling away i.e. deceleration and stopping of the body parts to sling the club head.
Chris, this explanation is excellent. Improved my iron strikes big time in the last couple of weeks,, thanks a lot!. Question I have, does this principle also apply to the driver strokes?
Incredibly well explained. This concept brings a lot of puzzle pieces together which I never could figure out before. Will look into some of Ernie Els's slomo videos to check if this is finally his secret 😁
Your explanations are always very concise! I've started off this year with the shanks. My right hand doesn't feel comfortable on the club. The second I start a back swing I can pretty much feel it's wrong! Would you mind going over how to recover from this curse in a future video? I save all your videos in OneNote and I don't see one on this issue. Thanks so much for your instructional videos.
Hi, Chris. First of all: I totally agree with you on the backswing and the start of the downswing. I recently (re-)discovered this swing mechanism and like you said, it gives you effortless power, because you maintain the angle in your wrists really long. However, I disagree with you when you say that in the second half of the downswing (towards impact), you should "pull the grip up". I know from experience how easy it is to misinterpret a tip. If you mention "pulling up the grip" or something like that, people will start collapsing their lead arm. Instead of that I just focus on pointing the back end of the grip towards the ball for as long as I can. The body rotation will take care of releasing the club(head).
Thanks for watching Rob and appreciate your feedback. I think everyone interprets things in their own way and a golfers history and previous experiences plays a huge part. Pulling the grip upwards or inwards is factually correct, we are now able to measure the forces a golfer puts through the golf club and that is exactly how we need to move the golf club, but also appreciate that for some it can cause issues 👍
How far ahead of you is the slanted alignment stick? Normally when I release the club head it is through the golf ball. Are you recommending having the club head go under the alignment stick or just follow the angle. I think I understand the movement with the handle coming up and back. Something I’m missing. Please explain. I think this video is the key to the swing with power so I want to get it right.
A superb explanation, thanks. My feeling with golf coaching is that if students deeply understand the physics of golf club movement they'll be able to work on their swings themselves, and will be able to self diagnose problems. I've always wondered how top professionals can hit a six iron 200 yards whilst looking like it's just a gentle knock, and this pretty much explains the mechanism. Now to apply the technique!
Hands exiting to the left is the single most insightful advice EVER. Trying to keep my hands moving down the line has messed me up for years.
You won’t be alone on that one, I still coach lots who have that concept in the swing 👍
I suffered with that for years as well (hand path moving down the target line at and after impact). Brilliant explanation of club speed without forcing it!

Chris- A very innovative approach to this lesson as it communicates cause and effect.
Great video.
Well explained.
Hands exit left not the club head is the concept I need to drill into my game.
Brilliant
This video was very helpful to me. I appreciate and use all of your videos!
Excellent explanation. Loved the physics behind this and can’t wait to try this.
Took this into yesterday’s comp. Been really struggling with my irons since lockdown, but this has really helped me. Cut from 26.6 to 23.2 yesterday!
Wow great to hear Chris
Best explanation of motion of grip and club. I have studied your article in top golfer magazine. With this video it all becomes very

Brilliant! The detailed breakdown you provide in your videos is what makes them stand apart.
Thank U - very good teaching - thank U for the drill.
Love the "PERFECT" Street Fighter sound effect in the beginning! 👍
Another excellent visional of the golf swing.
Thank you Chris. So clearly explained and with a simple drill. Can’t wait to get back on the range 👏🏻
Wie war Deine Erfahrung auf dem Golfplatz?
Now that’s a great video and learning. Great visual and explanation.
Great explanation! Never seen this before. Can't wait to practice this technique.

Wow what a magic move. I can not wait to try on range. Thanks.
been out today and used this on the course. Game changer!!!! shots were longer, better shape and it was all effortless. Thanks chris!

Is this motion with the exit left the same with the driver

It does, such an important part of the swing 👍
Once again got that intro music slappin! And another helpful video. 🏌🏾♂️
Absolutely Brilliant
Absolutely phenomenal video
Can this also apply to swinging woods as well ?
Another swell video. Will try this later today, thanks.
Great explanation and one I will be trying out tomorrow.
Thank you for your explanation in your videos, I now understand where my problems are. Never thought of it this way. Thanks for the good advice.
Love it, thanks so much. Month 2 and starting to make husband jealous. Your the only teacher I watch, your movements excellent.
Truly a brilliant lesson Chris.

Leadbetter talks about this in his book The Swing
That is a C type curve through impact
Thanks 🙏
