    Good tip I use this test all the time. Some cars have an auxiliary vacuum assist pump that is driven by your cars engine. Engine oil can leak through a defective pump and travel from the vacuum line to the booster, thus filling the booster with engine oil instead of brake fluid.

    Also, as brake pads wear the fluid levels go down. That's why if you top off on brake pads that need to be replaced, then replace the pads, the resivor will be overflowing.

      Brakes fluid will always go low and as well the brake fluid can get sucked into the engine vacuum

    • @gcbification
      @gcbification 3 года назад +5

      Worse case scenario (as it once happened to me) -- the rubber diaphragm inside the brake booster can perish/rot due to extended contact with the brake fluid, and when it perforates (typically when depressing brake pedal), you lose the power assist and the brake pedal feels like pushing a brick - guaranteed to increase driver pucker effect ; fix it before possibly getting caught out.
      Technically speaking, as the brake booster fills with fluid, you lose the vacuum capacity (think a booster unit half full of brake fluid ; I've come across this a few times in 50 years of turning tools), and the amount of power assistance decreases. Also worth noting, brake fluid reservoirs are typically designed to hold enough fluid to compensate for the increased brake piston capacity, as the brake pad/shoes wear down ~ your brake pads/shoes should wear out completely and be metal on metal, before the reservoir empties ~ in practice, by the time you see the brake fluid level in the reservoir getting down towards the low mark, it's time to inspect for brake pad/shoe wear. Don't forget to change your brake fluid every 2-3years m'kay =)
      @Oz Mechanics - neat trick ; I always used to just crack the nuts holding the master cylinder to the booster off a little bit, and pull up on the master cylinder while looking under it, and you'd see the run of fluid going down the booster face =)

    • @jagtan13
      @jagtan13 3 года назад

      The short end is he needs a new brake booster and either rebuild or replace the master cylinder. The pedal in most cars and light trucks use vacuum assistance via the brake booster. It provides mechanical power by using vacuum created from the engine to pull a diaphragm in the big cylinder. The other side of the diaphragm is open to the air. Atmospheric pressure 15psi absolute pushes over a large surface area over a short distance. Power = force × distance. The part that can be rebuilt is the master cylinder which takes the power from the pedal and booster to pressurize hydraulic fluid. The rear end of that in this case is leaking into the booster. The master cylinder is the component that compresses calipers; it can also open brake shoes on drum brakes.
