Please, no more clones. One of my least favorite features of Six Flags. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'd prefer the parks to remain unique, with unique collections that actually motivate you to visit.
Not that Cedar Fair parks don't have them too, but they're far less prevalent and tend to be more on the family end of the spectrum.

I personally agree, but from a GP point of view clones are really smart. Only the enthusiasts go to enough parks to care and the GP gets to not miss out on Batman or whatever at there local park. It saves the company money reusing a proven design and lets the GP not miss out on a popular ride.
But yeah. As an enthusiast, it gets annoying.

So here is the thing about the Six Flags/Cedar Fair merger: It makes a lot of sense in the current market. And no, I don't think it creates a concern of any sort related to it becoming a monopoly.
For starters, you have Disney and Universal. And you can't compete with either of them (particularly, these days, Universal which is just doing Tony Stark shit that even has Disney thinking, "WTF?"). And both of those companies, while situated on opposite ends of the country, are making encroachments into the middle of the country (Universal is opening something in Texas soon).
Those, of course, are theme parks. Not amusement parks (though Universal straddles the line). You also have upstart companies opening up insane projects in the bible belt. You have Lost Islands in Iowa which looks promising if it can develop an audience. More importantly, there is a major push in Oklahoma to build a park that can rival a Disney or Universal park. The American Heartland Park sounds impossible, but it's very well-funded and being built (like, actually being built) by former Disney Imagineers.
You have the many privately owned parks that are difficult to compete with. Like, you're not competing with Knoebels or Lagoon or Hershey. Sorry. You're not. Not if you're Six Flags or Cedar, anyway. You also have Herschend (with an insane amount of properties including parks like Silver Dollar City and Dollywood) that straddles the middle ground between theme and amusement park. Herschend owns the middle of the nation, and you can't compete with them without a massive investment.
And the future of the industry seems to be centered in the heartland/middle of the country. Six Flags and Cedar Fair aren't going to compete with what already exists there, nor can they compete with the other companies breaking ground there.
More importantly, though, is Sea World/Busch Gardens. That company is doing crack lately. Ever since they fell under intense scrutiny over ethical concerns related to their exploitation of animals, the company has done a complete 180. They overhauled their practices when it came to animals, and they've focused, almost exclusively, on building thrill rides.
Disney attracts families, but you're not going to experience a lot of thrills. Plus, you'll have to deal with shit like It's a Small World and insane lines. Universal is perfect for families with older kids. It has thrills and insane lands (the new Super Nintendo Worlds are incomprehensible), but the prices and lines are stupid.
Sea World? That's the perfect weapon. Kids young and old (even mom and dad) will enjoy petting dolphins and watching sea lions muck it up. Throw in the fact that you can also ride a hyper coaster? Perfect weapon. Six Flags, Cedar fair? They can't compete with Sea World as currently constituted. They can't compete with Disney or Universal. They probably won't be able to compete with the massive parks being build in places like Oklahoma or Iowa. They can't compete with the well-established independent parks.
Six Flags and Cedar Fair are an endangered species.
During the coaster wars of the '90s and early years of this century, both companies painted themselves into a corner. If they want to survive, it makes sense to Voltron up, combine their resources, and forge ahead in a new direction.
We will likely never see another giga coaster again, and that monstrosity being built in Saudi Arabia may be the last "reach for the stars" coaster we ever get to experience. I'm not sure what this new company will look like in ten or twenty years.
I do believe, though, that without this merger there is a good chance both companies would not make it another ten or twenty years.
So, yeah: The merger makes sense.
It's stunning. But it makes sense. Coaster enthusiasts will flock to parks with insane rides, but the amusement/theme industry makes its money by catering to families.
All the parks I just talked about, even if pricier, are more appealing to families. And for every coaster enthusiast, there are a thousand families.
The merger makes sense. Insane as it sounds, it makes sense.

Do you have any idea what a ground up park costs? Hint, there is a reason neither Cedar Fair nor Six Flags has built one since the 70's. One of the first things the combined company will look at is what parks to cut. SF has a bunch of non lucrative EPR lease deals with 2 dry parks and 5 water parks. Other low performing, low price point parks are also likely on the chopping block..LaRonde, Great Escape, America etc.. 27 parks and 15 water parks is too many mouths to feed. THe reason Cedar fair has nicer parks, higher quality food/restaurants, infrastructure is that they only had 11 parks while producing more revenue than SF. Cedar Fair essentially is running the show in the merger with the CEO and CFO.
