From Tree to Off Grid Cabin. Milling & Installing a Rustic Pine Floor

- I could just go to the nearest box store and buy flooring. But why?! I have trees on the ground, waiting to be milled and shaped into something beautiful. So let's do that!
In this video, we take an old burnt tree, cut a log out of it, mill the log, cut the planks, rip and sand the boards, and finally...install stunning, rustic pine flooring! It's just that easy!
Well, it's actually not easy at all. But if it were easy, everyone would do it. And when everyone does anything, the charm and uniqueness gets lost. Not here! This floor is loaded with character and brimming with beauty. I bet you agree, as you watch the story of a cabin floor unfold before your eyes.
And an important design question: Would you or wouldn't you...? Oh, you need more information? Check out this awesome video!
Thanks for watching @LifeontheMoose !

I have to say that the eclipse may be the coolest thing I have ever seen and I am 70 years old. I have never seen a full eclipse before and the awesome work of God cannot be overstated as far as I am concerned!
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing! 🙏
Me too. 73 here.
How do you do so much and do such a great job? I have been sick with Epstein Barr for 22 years and will be 75 in December. How do we get old so fast? Hehehe
Looking forward to heaven. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!!❤❤
Patrick, the wood look is a good look, once you paint you can't go back. I would wait awhile, see how the wood colours develop and then decide. Watching you each week is so relaxing, as they say, i love hard work, i could watch it for hours. 😂
I appreciate that! 🙏
Exactly! Natural.
I think a painted accent wall would be nice! The floor turned out awesome, gotta love a sawmill! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Indeed! 🙏
Just received my "Happiness" Moose Merch t-shirt. Checked it over and found it was top notch quality and arrived quickly. Then some red stains on the front caught my eye. Looking closer, it was chilli stains! Perfect. Not too many RUclipsrs would go to all the effort to add a personal touch to their merch. Thanks. Good video.
Hey thank you! Glad you received the mug ok. Chili and all..🙏
@@LifeontheMoose You might have interest in a YT channel recent submission of "Northwoodsman1" using a more portable mill with his chainsaw and a ladder. A center point emanating radial sunburst array of 2" light colored lodgepole pine over a darker stain background might look good over the door. Bookend for the loft railing.
Ha ha ha . He's got a great bunch of followers!!!!❤
No paint for me! Love the natural wood look. The door could be painted a color, perhaps.
Oh….and the wide plank floor is awesome!
🙏
The floor looks awesome ❤great video can’t wait to see when it’s done Love watching love your sense of humor 😊great work my friend until your next video stay strong and may god bless you 🙏❤️✌🏼
Thanks so much! 🙏🙏
That blue board is awesome
More beautiful each week! ❤
🙏
Hi 👋 Patrick, good to be back on the job site with you.
Don’t paint!! Live with it for a while. With the natural wood through out the cabin. Once you paint there’s no going back… at least not with a lot of hard work, just what you need is more hard work. Maybe a bit of Decor would be a way to start off the cabin. I know you don’t want to visually shrink the inside of the cabin and with paint that is a possibility 🤷♂️
I’m looking forward to seeing you again next week! Till then,You take care of yourself Patrick
Good to see you! We’re thinking alike...
Take care! 🙏
Ah, thank you for another great episode. Friday would not be the same without a visit with you. Hubby says hi, have a great evening. Dee
Hi, and hi hubby! Glad to have you back. 🙏
Patrick, sure is nice to see you’re using the materials that you’ve readily available. Adds a personal touch as well. I continue in awe at your work ethic! 👍
Thank you!
The floor looks great !!! The cabin is looking good !!!!
Thank you!
Have a great weekend my friend
You, too John! 🙏
Looking Great! Also beautiful country!!!
That millwork my friend!!! Good job! Looks great!
🙏
Awesome episode as usual thank you.
Aw thank you!🙏
I absolutely ❤️it!!! Great stuff!
Me too! 🙏
The wide floor boards look good! As for painting the one wall … yes? But what color? I’m thinking a warm distressed red? Or white washed? Your call! 🤣
Thanks for sharing
I'm with you every step of the way. I look forward to two
things every Friday. A 10 mile hike in the desert and Life on the Moose. Life is good.
Wow sounds like it is! I appreciate the comment. 🙏
Very nice
Thanks!
Another great video, the floor boards are awesome
Thank you!
Beautiful color in that wood. Fantastic tree.
I agree!
Hey Patrick, Toes are crossed also!!!.... Ha, ha. Great to see you my friend. Sincerely, the old Montana cowboy, Frank Scherping❤😅
Thanks, Frank!
So, so, SOOO good.
🙏
I'm glad you live in a dry climate. Drywall screws are prone to rust. Deck screws would probably have been a better choice. Keep your eyes pealed for rusty screws around the door where wet boots come in. Change those screws out if it becomes a problem. I enjoy watching your projects. Cheers.
They’ll get a nice thick coat of lacquer and never be an issue. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Absolutely do an accent wall. Everything looks fantastic.
Thanks!
Natural
Hey Patrick, my wife and I love watching you on Saturday morning while we drink our coffee. As for the question of the painted or not painted wall, what if you white washed it but not the window or door trim. What ever you do it'll look great.
That’s awesome. Glad to see you every Saturday. I won’t touch the trim! 🙏
Floor looks great! Love the straight up camera shot of the snow...do it again 😊
There's nothing like milling your own lumber, but it does come with some ups and downs and broken bands 😉 Just got back to our little piece of Washington heaven yesterday and ready to start the third summer of milling and sometimes learning the hard way!
True that! Let me know how the project goes.
I like way you build No cutting corners.
Thank you! MOST of the time anyway..😅
I love watching the milling process. Really cool. Great video as usual. Thanks Patrick.
Thank you!
Very enjoyable video. Love the cabin and the banter. Great personality to do videos which makes viewing so much more enjoyable. Great to mill the logs off your own property. Big thumbs up.
Wow thanks so much! I appreciate it. 🙏
Beautiful wood! And wisely used.
I can't imagine how beautiful his house is going to look
I can only imagine what your ranch looked like before the fire, but based on the size of the trees, I would bet they only added to the beauty of the landscape. If you ever find old photos of before, that would be interesting to see. Floor looks great!
I should have included a few photos... I’m sure I will in the future. The towering ponderosas added to the beauty, for sure. 🙏
@@LifeontheMoose that would be awesome to see for sure
Looks great. Love the fact you used and milled the wood from the property.
🙏
Excellent as always! 👍
Snow looked cool!
Great job done with flooring! 😉
Small things, usually, take a lot of time (don't ask, how I know).. Looking at the list, there will be multiple cabin videos, from this point.. And that's great, because I will wait for them..
About wall, from my perspective, leave it natural and do not paint, but for contrast - hang some pictures, paintings, small shelves, horse shoes, moose horns etc..
But can of paint leave for cities where everything is synthetic.. 😂
Thank you! Multiple videos indeed. I appreciate the comment. 🙏
❤I am pretty sure that I shared the RUclips videos but we are still so proud
Thank you!🙏
I would paint the bottom part, perhaps a barn red or some shade of green. Watched the eclipse here in Maine, incredible!
Cool!
came out nice
Sure beats buying from box stores. Looks great 👍🏻
Thanks!
Just great thanks for posting the wood is so nice ! Keep up the great work
Thank you! 🙏
Love the flooring, I would use a sunset yellow stain on the wall, just light enough to let the grain of the wood show but dark enough to tell it been painted. Need to paint the outside door trim, looks like it’s used!!
I’ll add that to the list! 🙏
Yes. Paint the wall. It will look amazing.
Man I really enjoy your videos, Thank you for sharing.
Thank YOU! 🙏
Yes, I would paint it. A nice powder Blue.
My trappers log cabin (Eastern white pine) I just used a colored (light blue stain-yes I still have the can with the mixture recipe) on the trim to break up the logs. really worked well.
Nice!
Floor looks great. I love it. Was waiting for the flooring episode. still need to put my flooring in my cabin. I would paint it.
Good luck with that floor! 🙏
Looking good!! Personally, I like the natural look but agree on breaking it up a little. Maybe a colored stain that gives a little hint of color??
Greetings from Slovakia.
I'm actually watching your vids standing up 😅 in our kitchen.
Mostly while cooking lunch on a Saturday.
Keep it up. Good luck with the channel.
Hi Slovakia! Thank you for standing by! 🙏🙏
Great work, Patrick! Quite entertaining!! Thx for sharing your projects with us! Peace from Daytona Beach
Hi Daytona B! Thank you.🙏
Outstanding Craftsman ship 👍!
Thanks! It’s all in the editing…😅
as you said earlier there are going to be gaps, cracks, joints and spaces in the floor so the black tar paper is a good idea, it is what people place behind reclaimed barn wood walls to make the spaces less noticeable
That’s also what I was thinking. 🙏
before finishing, you could lightly sand the floor and sweep the dust in the cracks and I think you said lacquer but ships use shellac so what ever finish ( even Polyurethane ) could level out the cracks and joints somewhat / good to try before you build you new abode
Keep it natural. If you want to add some color, hang artwork like laser-cut metal painted bright colors. Love your work ethic and banter. Keep it up!
I appreciate that. I will!
Keep up the great work thank you
Thank YOU for watching!
All natural
If you must paint the wall, I would suggest a pickled oak style white wash. I would not use an opaque paint..
Old School Shalac Best Bet
"Dust and Memories" sounds like the name of an old timey country music album. You know, like back when all the ladies in the industry wore really big hair.
Like lyrics to a song (good memories!)
I remember!
Looks great
beautiful floor ty
excellent work, interesting to look at
🙏
I like the all-natural wall. Just caught your channel. Looks like an awesome project you have going!
Hey great to have you! 🙏
oh I reckon I'll help...I'll get the lil boards....
🙏
awesome flooring Patrick....perhaps staining is an option for the inside(part of.....)all sort of colors are available so it can give that extra personal touch...just an opton...greets Nico
Thanks, Nico!
Oh natural
Floor looks great I don't think i would paint anything maybe the cabinets to add some color
Thanks!
SURE LOOKS LIKE MONTANA!
I LIVE IN BILLINGS SO YES I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH BEARTOOTH PASS!
I LIKE WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
GOOD LUCK & BE SAFE!
Ah cool! That’s a beautiful road.
It does look like Montana, which is one reason we fell in love with it. But it’s E Washington.
Yes paint the front wall a nice soft blue, orange or green.
A+
🙏
Thanks. Learn a lot.
🙏
Looks great. Consider a mini wood burning stove.
Try weathered grey-Oh yes, they would call it "Accent wall"
I think having an accent wall would look great. It would tone down some of the wood.
I'm originally from Minnesota but I've never seen snowflakes as big as you're getting. Holy smokes!! Mother Nature does beautiful work some days. 🙏🙏
She sure does!
-originally from Iowa.
"Mother Nature"??? How about God?
@@Johnny_Yuma Amen!!
I would wait a bit on painting and see what naturally happens, but if you decide to paint there’s a Sherwin-Williams color called Iron Ore that I did an accent wall in my garage and it is very nice.
Thank you!
When I was in high school/college I played T-Bone in a jazz band. We called our band "Saw". Our trumpet player also played football. During one of his games he got hit so hard that he lost his front teeth. I tell you this because I know first hand that missing teeth can severely affect the performance of a band saw. (Too much??? Sorry, I just thought you could use a good pun.)
I just came in from working on my Train Room project. All the while I'm laboring I was thinking that it would be so nice to borrow your fast forward speed ability and get this chore over more quickly. I gotta say that it sure is neat to see you enjoy doing whatever comes your way. It gives me inspiration!
Another excellent job done your way. If you are truly asking for guidance for paint or no paint...I suggest NO paint. I also understand that it's ultimately up to Karen (and you). Thanks again, see you next week.
Ha great story! Not too much.
Thank you. 🙏 Glad to see you here.
Really nice flooring. Yes paint the wall, too much wood look. We have switched to using the red Rosen paper under floor, cheaper, doesn’t smell, stops the squeaks and thinner so no worries about overlapping. Try it sometime. We also usually run the floor on the short dimension perpendicular to the floor, gives the illusion the cabin is wider, just a design thought.
Thanks for the info! Couldn’t run the planks the other direction. Joists…
I appreciate the comment! 🙏
Apply a coat of linseed oil, slightly thinned with odorless mineral spirits and a small amount of Japan drier to the interior wall boards. Then make the decision to paint. Sweet project.
Interesting!
Agree with some painting to break up the wood look!
Tuyệt vời quá 🎉
all natural
I would stain all the trim a translucent color . It's small cabin but you are gonna have a lot of trim . I feel that it would pop this way while keeping the wood look.
🙏
I say paint, my wife says all natural, 😂 hope this helps. Looks good either way.
Ha thank you!
Have you thought of scorching the inside gable wall and then oiling it? Might be a bit risky, but can provide a lovely finish. Your ranch looks amazing, have you planted more trees or do the White tail deer eat them? Love your content and thank you for it.
Thanks for the comment and for watching! I think I’ll pass on the interior fire, tho… 🙏
I wouldn't want a painted accent wall, but maybe a white wash could look good?
@ 25:20 I feel your pain on the Phillips heads, maybe next floor try dipping screws in Tung Oil before drilling into floor, might help might not ?
I like the color of the board in the middle of the door opening.
Why the cabins, their size and placement on your land?
I like building stuff!
Do the walls with a white wash / pickled wood.
Hi Patrick! Love your channel! Painting the wall would be okay, but why not wall paper it with some really cool paper? I do think that all wood can become boring and some contrast would be nice.
Thank you!🙏
Looks good ! I see you finally put on knee pads... Don't paint, more labor, and if I was staying in the cabin I would want the woodsy look. Besides if I was staying there I wouldn't be in the cabin much..
Thank you!🙏
Great video brother I'd do a white wash on that wall or the back wall with loft
Hello from Midway,Tx 🤙 looking good, when you get done with this cabin, what are your plans for another building project ?
Hello! First up is probably an outdoor “kitchen” there. Then a few more small projects lined up before the eventual ranch house build.
Definitely paint the wall. It will break up the too much wood look. But I suggest you wait till you have completely finished the walls and flooring to choose the color.
Smart!
❤❤❤❤i liked❤❤❤❤
🙏🙏
Nicely done. I was wondering what kind of coating you were thinking of using on the floor? On my house, built around 1850, I pulled up the linoleum used to cover the floor. I put Masonite down on the bare would as the splinters was somewhat devasting. I eventually planed and sanded it, then coated it with a polyurethane. No more splinters, but I think it was 6 coats. It seems to be wearing thru now after 4-5 years. Oh well, I'll have to coat it again. I'm probably more concerned about what your finish is just thinking of the splinters I endured. And, It was fun watching you harvesting the log as it was in the aereal view along with the other one just up the hill. :)
Thank you!
yes some paint
Stain it a light to medium gray. It will tie into all of the natural grey accents in the wood and won’t cover up its authentic beauty.
