Installing Posts & Beams for an Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen. Ep #2

- Using oversized 6x6's that were milled on Red Moose Ranch from Ponderosa Pine killed in a wildfire, I attach them to last week's buried brackets, and boom...we have posts! I used a similar method when I built the barn on the Ranch. No earth-to-wood contact here!
And like usual, I couldn't just go buy floor beams...I made them! I simply sandwiched, glued and screwed two treated 2x8's together. Fastened securely to the posts with structural screws, we are ready for joists.
This episode contains many sights and sounds of the stunning area in which I am blessed to work and video. When your view isn't interrupted by this weird guy working, the scenery is simply beautiful!
Thank you for watching @LifeontheMoose ! Without you, I wouldn't be here.

Happy seeing this build begin. The post lumber will add to the value of the scene since that lumber is from trees from the property. I bet with that zoom on the camera you could see sasquatch in the forest across the way! Great video, looking forward to this series.
Hey thank you! I’ve been looking for the ‘squatch…
Great video always your sense of humor and a great builder the cabin came out amazing just enjoy watching!!!!! Looking forward to seeing how this comes out!
Thank you so much! That’s very kind. 🙏
Next build: An out house on the other side of the cabin at the top of the hill! So you can pooh with a view.
😂
@@LifeontheMoose Priceless!
Great job, Patrick!!! With these posts and beams I can see a kitchen there!!
Just a question, by curiosity: why did you use those biggest beams one internally and the other externally considering the whole kitchen, instead of use both internally or both externally?
Thank you! If I understand the question, hopefully it will become evident in the upcoming videos. The canyon side joists will run long, over that beam, and I simply wanted the shortest span possible to accomplish the “plans” in my head. 🤔😅
@@LifeontheMoose thanks. I'm sure I will understand it soon and I will let you know. 😊 It's a pity we can't send an image or something like that to explain better. Many times an image is better than many words. 😉
I love watching you. You're a breath of fresh air. Judy C
You’re kind! 🙏
Hammer drills revolutionized fasteners...i remember hanging drywall with a phillips head screwdriver...life was rough
Yikes!
Totally dig the dark socks and work shoes with your shorts. I rock the same look myself. My feet are nice and comfortable and I don’t care what anybody else thinks.
Ha exactly! I tend to care a little less every birthday. 🙏
Ooooooh yeah. Friday made.
🙏
I just love your kind of humour but also the content of your channel ... it was a great choice to follow you and I look forward to many more building and other projects! Have a nice weekend!
Hey thank you so much for making good choices!! Enjoy your weekend, as well. 🙏
great building skills and great video scripting and editing skills also! love your channel!
Thanks so much! That means a lot. 🙏
Remove battery when changing blades…akin to unplugging saw
ain't it a blessing to have what ya need..or make what you have work.....
It sure is!
It’s Friday! Love the video of the deer walking. The grass is still nice and green! Great video as usual Patrick. I did miss the long sanding sections though. 😂
Thanks! I’ll try and weave in more sanding..🙏
💖💖💖💖🙏🙏 My goodness, that shot of the sun ring behind the top of that pine tree was phenomenal. Good on you!!
Yeah that was just too stunning not to share. 🙏
Just wanted to let you know, your goal of inspiring first time builders has worked, my wife and I are about to do the siding on our "Cabin in the woods". Started in March and followed along. All the way down here in SE Missouri.
Hey that’s so awesome! Keep me posted on the project. 🙏
Hello Patrick 👋
Good to be back on the job site again with you.
You have a great start on the outdoor kitchen,I’m already looking forward to next week.
Take care of yourself Patrick and I’ll see you soon 👍
Hello and thanks! Glad to see you. 🙏
4th comment wow..... not much to watch today.....
Awesome, perfectly💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you! 🙏
Thanks again for another fine video! Always fun!
🙏
Excellent entertainment, as always!
Watching beam offset measuring with measurement tape pointing down between legs and laser point at that tape was fun! 😂 Lot of great jokes in this episode!
Love idea to put seal between two deck joists to prevent moisture accumulation, considering, climate..
I think that, under these center blocks some gravel will prevent joist middle sagging from washouts - sand will go first leaving blocks hanging..
View from new outdoor kitchen place is gorgeous! 👍
Yeah I had lots of opportunity to laugh at myself! Thanks for the ideas! 🙏
Maybe you should just get a cheap used mountain bike or fat tire bike to carry with those beams so you can get back to the ranch a lot faster.
Great minds! lol. I was thinking the exact same thing..
Made a platform and outdoor shower yesterday. We are doing tongue and groove today and tomorrow. Always good to see what you are doing.
Hey cool. Thanks for keeping me posted!
love construction + for sure your choice of music too !
🙏
Definitely should use ledger lock screws attaching a joist to 6x6
Finally replacing the blade,lol.
Right?!
Everything will be just fine.
I couldn’t agree more!
Lets get to work ...the cats are antsy..
I understand..as a cat owner!
12:37 Not as meditative as shaving it down with a slick but it's accurate and efficient.
Great start. Thanks for sharing
🙏
Great stuff! What type of 2x8s are you using for those beams?
I like the way you think..
🙏
Lookin' great and glad to see you're not putting I your mouth
The tent was a bit drafty last night.......
Nice start to the kitchen. Timber framer here, I would recommend the 16 5/16 Skilsaw for cutting beams. Makes life much easier, a good purchase for me. Looking forward to seeing the next video.
Sounds like a good idea. Thank you! 🙏
Hey Patrick, Buenos noches from Rancho de Vegas.
With legs like those now I understand why pants were invented. Haha! Thank you for starting a new project, it gives this old retired dude something to do on Fridays. Take care and keep moving forward. See you next Friday!
Ha that’s a good one! Glad to tie up your Fridays for awhile. 🙏
6:13 You buy those Finnish blades? Very fancy, those Finns really know their saw blades. I knew a Finn once, old drinking Buddy named Mickey. He was one of the reasons I quit drinking. But to my question: When will they ever make a handsaw the same thickness as a circular saw blade?
Ha good question!
I’m sure there’s a root word connection between fine and finish, but Finnish? Probably!
As always I enjoy all your episodes!! PS... If it's legal can you share the name of the music at @12:30 minutes into the video?? TIA Dean
Thank you! The music is listed in the video description.
❤ it's going to amazing to have meals there so peaceful and beautiful ❤. Great job so far my friend xxx Australia
Thank you, Australia!
Just for future reference, I like the Simpson screws much better than the nails--like most nail vs. screw comparisons, I think the screws hold better, and in most situations, they're sure a lot easier to install! Great work, fun to watch!
Ah good to know, thank you! 🙏
After the kitchen you can build an outdoor shower or outhouse! 🚿🧻
I've got pretty much the same water bottle. Got mine at a Jackson Browne concert. Should be a good kitchen build series.
Hey cool! Sounds like a good concert.
I think you should put angle brackets on the inside 2x8 beam. Right now the outer 2x8 is holding up the inner 2x8.
I probably will do that. Although I really don’t think it’s a necessity. I believe the shear strength of one board over such a small area at the very ends, is still better than the deflection potential near the center of two boards. But…the pier blocks take care of that.
Good conversation! lol. I appreciate the input.🙏
I just read Maxid1's comment about building an outhouse. I watched a video on sidetrack adventures yesterday about an outside pottie made of one way mirrors and thought that with all those beautiful views you have....well just a thought.
I like it!
can't talk too much today..94 degrees and been working in it...lov ya
Stay cool! 🙏
With all the cabins you're building, do you do Venmo or Air B and B? Looks like a lovely place to vacation.
Not yet! Never say never, but short term plans are just for personal use.
9:30 Water under what you're building. Once upon a time in the 1980s I lived in a little town called Imperial Beach in Southern California. We were in a duplex and I had a rat problem and an infant baby so I was on high alert. These were asiatic rats and really big. I'd killed one or two before I went to the middle of the building between the two halves and went into my water heater room for some reason. While i was in there the door blew closed and I saw light coming from the crawl space. It was light reflected off water. The pad had a 4 or 6 inch curb around it effectively turning the water leak from the faucet in the front of the house into a swimming pool and it was teaming with rats. I considered dropping a cable plugged from the 220v into the water but called the landlord instead.
Yikes! That live cord may have been more interesting to witness.
Houdy! What is the serrated looking plate you install at the bottom of your uprights. What’s the. purpose of it?
Hi! Possibly you are referencing the strapping? I just wanted to capture more of the post.
Thanks for another great video Patrick! Can you give us an honest review of your new tool belt?
Honestly, I do have a complaint about the belt: I wish there was a “high and tight” pencil holder on the right. I find myself digging for the pencil once in a while, so I might look for a workaround.
Knowing what I know now, would I spend the money on another? Yes! I can’t imagine the quality being any better. It fits well and stays put, and the moveable bags make it comfortable in different circumstances. And realistically, my complaints so far are probably more ‘user habit’ related than product defect.
Geniet er steeds van hoe je de kijkers bij je project betrekt door uitleg te geven hoe je het doet👌. En het uitzicht dat je daar hebt amai, om jaloers van te worden 😁, zo prachtig 👍. Doe zo verder. Groeten vanuit België 🇧🇪.
Well thank you! Yeah that view spoils me..🙏
IDK...they look like regular "chicken legs" to me!!!🤣
Too early in the year to be BBQ…😂
I was so intent on listening to what you were saying in this episode that when I was gonna go grab something from the kitchen and at about that time, you said you were gonna put in the pier blocks, and to.not go anywhere, that I stopped and waited for you to finish. (I could have just hit the pause... but no, I was.in it with you).😂😂😂😂
Ha! That’s good! All in this together. 🙏
You know its summer when the construction guys start wearing shorts and short socks...next step is shirtless...lol
Hmmm…not sure about that! 🤔😅
waiting for the Moose Store to open back up...I told ya if you got T shirts I would buy one..
Maybe if you go to my homepage and click on the “PayPal plus one” link, you can get there. The store should be the ‘plus one.’ 🙏🙏
We need to get some BBQ sauce on those chicken legs...............LOL!!!
Yum! 😂
That looks like it will be sturdy , good start you will have a awesome view when your making breakfast !
I hope so! 😅 yeah I love that view. Thank you! 🙏
😀 its okay hun Im a 59 year old female my legs have blow out with the spider veins , and I had worn jheans all last summer mine were Very white at the start of spring here
You understand!
Really cool! How about a rooftop water catchment drum that feeds to a sink? Mighta let-in those 2x8's into the posts - lots of weight for screws. How about cantilevering the joists over the beam on the Christmas Tree Canyon side?
Hmmm…have you already seen my next video?!
My wife just made a big pot of cowboy beans. Come on over after you put up your tractor and have a bowl 😊
Mmmm… sounds good!
Great video 🎉 Patrick.... The socks and shoes not so good Patrick 😊
Ha thanks! And I don’t necessarily disagree!
Great stuff! What type of 2x8s are you using for those beams?
Those are pressure-treated pine.
I put joist tape on the bottoms of my post 4 in up. Or 6 in. flashing tape
Also a good idea!👍🏻
Question..why is kitchen so far away from the cabi ..
A level spot in which could dig.
Hello from Midway, Tx looks great 👍….
Thank you, Midway!
I think this should be called the Bent Tree Kitchen merch to be named later !!
I like it!
See ya next week....unless I watch it again..hum...
See you then! And thanks for the rewatch.🙏
Thanks again 😅
So glad to see you on another project. I really enjoy your videos.
I’m so glad you do! 🙏
Allen Key* :P
Thank you
Was there not a good spot to build the outdoor kitchen near the cabin ?
Nope!
Why is one beam on the outside of the post and the other is on the inside?
Ultimately, the joists will be cantilevered over the “inside” beam. I believe it will be clearer as we make progress.
2:10 I don't know if you've ever read the "The Long Walk" by Stephen King (I've completely lost respect for him recently due to...well never mind) In that story you had to walk 4 miles per hour to not be eliminated from the race. You're a contender! I don't recommend reading it because he's ... well never mind..
I used to read a LOT of SK, but missed that one. Used to..
@@LifeontheMoose It was written under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. One of the novellas in a compilation book with other short stories.
So cool
Cool
Wow, trees with halos. Down here all we have are cacti with horns...tiny horns, like needles...and temps hovering in the 105° to 110° F area...but it's a dry heat. Well enough complaining...good to see you back at it.
I have always supported you philosophy to do things your way and know that you're correct when you say "It'll be all right."; however wouldn't it be stronger to notch the posts and inset the outer part of the beam in a slot so it would rest on top of a support instead of hanging on screws? Believe me, I'd never question this except of a bad experience that I had with a porch roof construction where I did exactly the same thing you did and trusted the weight to screw support only.
I don’t think you’re wrong! lol. I didn’t want to compromise the posts by notching them so close to the bottom. I think by the time I finish the floor structure, the strength may be more apparent as it’s all tied together.
Stay cool down there! 🙏
@@LifeontheMoose I know you've got it covered. My faith in you is a lot stronger than in most of what I see out there!
I was having withdrawals after you completed the Cabin build. I went back and binge watched the entire series. Now that you started the outdoor kitchen the universe is back in synch. Guess you don't hear me reply when you ask for help holding up some trim or needing a tool passed to you. I am shouting as loud as I can! BTW, the black socks are geeky chic. You sir are a trend setter!!
lol I’m not making the trendsetter claim…just yet. Thanks for binging and being here! 🙏
@@LifeontheMoose You're always good for a laugh! Happy Fathers Day!!!
Patrick, is the Allen key just above the battery? It is a phenomenon where you see it so often that when looking for it, your brain ignores it.
You should invest in a post level, they make the job so much easier.
That’s where the key SHOULD be! 😅
@@LifeontheMoose 🤣
Nice legs, but we need more ankle next time
lol, I’ll try to accommodate!
With that view how do you get any work done..
It’s honestly difficult at times!
There’s nothing wrong with your legs, Patrick😊
Ha thanks!🙏
You’re welcome my friend 🦵🏻🦵🏻😊
caught the crud but all else is Ok...
Get better!
So much fun Paddy boy!!
🙏
A four mile walk in only an hour? Amazing feat on those legs! 😂
Or amazing feet…🙄🙏
@@LifeontheMoose Exactly!
your content is very good
I really appreciate that!
Will the stump be a step?
Good question! It may have a role going forward.
I may have missed something but was just wondering why you put the 2x8’s on the inside of two posts and on the outside on the other two?
If I understand your question, you’ll see the answer in the next video. I didn’t want to cut into the post, and I didn’t want to “hang” both boards to the side either. I’m no engineer, but I believe this connection will more than suffice. I’ll try to clarify coming up..
@@LifeontheMoose Let me try again lol. If you are standing in the kitchen looking toward the canyon, the 2x8’s are on the inside of the posts. If you are looking toward the back of the kitchen, those 2x8’s are on the outside of the posts. Inside and outside are only relative to the location of the 2x8’s as you look at them from inside the kitchen area. Hope this makes more sense than my first attempt lol.
@@timothychristian9140 I’m going to cantilever the joists over the canyon side. Just wanted a few inches shorter joist span. Good question!
@@LifeontheMoose Makes a lot more sense now.
Awesome that we have another project to enjoy! Thx Patrick!! Peace be with you and peace from Daytona Beach!!
Thank you, DB!🙏
