It’s Friday! Oh man, nothing better than cast iron fried steak in butter! 🎉 Another fun installment on the outdoor kitchen. A little disappointed that there was no sanding, but I’ll get over it. Thanks again Patrick for getting my weekend started off right…..oh wait, I’m retired! Every night is a Friday night and every day is a Saturday……
While you eat I'll comment: Douglas Fir...you gotta prove nothing to me. I've seen your work and approve it, Your builds will hold up 1000K times longer than a certain politician's thought process during a presidential debate!
Okay, I finished watching to the end. You floored me with this one. At least you didn't get too spaced out and become board with your work. and just say "Screw it.". Thanks for the ideas, gorgeous scenery, and fantastic music. You've definitely have a talent and patients. May your arm heal posthaste.
I like the 2x4 extra "hand" board you used to butt the flooring up against. It's nice when that extra hand starts out a board, and doesn't whine about how bored it is...
You did such a great job on the cabin I know this is going to be amazing 🥲!!!! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out until then stay safe stay healthy and god bless my friend 🙏❤️✌🏼
@24:30 you could also take a can of "Thompson's Water Seal" and a tray and roller and just roll the deck, then water will bead up and roll off no problem !!
Glad to hear you are going to put up some sort of walls. Given you penchant for bare chilli, it will provide some amount of civility for others. Some of the older gents here at Fred Moose Lodge will go around without shirts and time has not been overly kind to them. It tends to scare women and confuse babies. Great video, I've been delayed getting to my cabin in the Arapaho National Forest, but I'm sure with your help the deck build will go quickly. I'm using cut down carved teak room dividers between the support posts. Once the carved foliage is painted, it will add to the Bavarian Forest look of the cabin. And, it will give you someone to ask questions of that's actually there.
I have had great luck with my Bucket Boss tool belt. You can spend more for an Occidental or Diamondback but for the average/casual DIYer the Bucket Boss is an affordable, comfortable and lightweight alternative with plenty of accessories Another Friday at Rancho de Vegas enjoying Life on the Moose. Stay safe Patrick and Happy 4th!🇺🇸
35:09 I would recommend the outdoor kitchen be dual purpose (if not more): As a kitchen with a nice island (for that grill and sink maybe) and as a bathing/miniature hot tub area. You could get a used bathtub some place and have it on there if you need it and drag it off into the bushes if you don't... maybe.
I have the Doug fir door yard table and 6 chairs my Grandfather made right after getting married, well over 100 years ago. They are untreated, unpainted, and as far as I know have never been given any special treatment except put in the barn during winter snows. As far as I'm concerned...good choice..plus use what you have available.
A little stone fireplace place would be nice on the up wind side but I know that would be more work and added expense? But any way it's going to be a really nice place to relax and enjoy friends and family Patrick.
Perkins Brother Builders tool belts are awesome. I think you’d like it. Deck looks great Patrick. Man that’s a lot of steak! But it sure looked tasty!!!
Blockings are called Dwangs here in Scotland , Noggings in England. Like you say, with 6x2 (we always put depth first😂) boards the blocking is an extra.
for the solid wall you will have to research what is the direction of the prevailing wind for the season that you want the most protection in the "Bent Tree Kitchen" LOL
Perkins builder brothers tool belt. They are another great channel. Maybe explain who you are and what you’re doing, maybe they’ll give you one to promo. Love your channel, keep up the entertainment!!
Hi, Patrick!! The deck is really nice. I'm a little crazy about open spaces (I mean without walls) but as it's an outdoor kitchen, I would build at least 2 half walls with windows to block some rain, snow and wind inside it. Certainly, it wouldn't block all of it, but it would help a bit. And they have something as big windows on them, you could open them during the summer or when the weather is good enough. Once we don't have snow in Brazil, except in very southern states, I have no idea how it works with this weather, but I'm sure you make a better decision about the next steps. Hugs from your Brazilian friend. 😊🖖
I believe we are thinking along the same lines. Hoping not to put glass in it, but like the idea of having the option of opening something up at times of the year. Thank you! Hugs back to Brazil. 🙏
I've used them with just a little bit of tip. Sticking out, just put your drill, run your drill around it and use it that way. I don't know if you got a drill there that you can chuck it down on it, but that'll work because i've used them that way
you can always buy some cheap painters drop clothes and large wooden dowels and make some roll up sun shades/wind breaks for walls that get too much sun or wind
as long as the wood if off the ground, it will last (at elevation) for decades. I have hatchet/saw cuts on old juniper stumps from the mining days of 1880's. those snags last centuries.
@ 16:00 if worried about the decking ( weathering over time ), just take a garden sprayer filled with deck stain/sealer and simply spray the whole deck yearly
I thought maybe you'd exclaim that your arm wound came from hunting triffids or fighting off a herd of penguins but your story was riveting none the less. 😁
Boards all covered perfectly. Victory is the culmination of the mistakes you make a long the way. a wise man once said that. Well, not that wise because I just made it up... At least I think I did.
My suggestion for the seasoned toolbelt would be to fix the belt and keep using it... I am convinced you will not be able to find a nicer and better suited belt in the store today...
1:43 A house I had in San Francisco had this weird rise and valley in the kitchen floor. Not huge but noticeable (I think it was over an inch from side to side). When I went to redo the floor I expected to find some kind of mechanical failure or bug/water damage, something. I pulled all the tile up and then the subflooring and it was nothing but twists, and crowns and valleys caused by the messed up rough sawn lumber lumber the house was built with in 1955. I planed down the high spots. Ended up floating the floor and slate tiling (previous floor was many layers of vinyl tile) so the low spots took care of themselves.
I would have build me a lil side table from that block of wood you showed us. Man,,,take that ol friend tool belt to a Shoe Repair shop..Or wouldn't it be neat to have you one made out of some Moose hide from your ranch.
As altitude increases relative humidity decreases. So at altitude there is less oxygen per litre of air so the capacity of the air to hold moisture decreases.
"My side" of the deck was off by a quarter inch because you didn't share that second steak with me. Starve the help and expect a measurable declivity in quality of work. LOL
I’d buy onea your Tshirts. Early episode. Id like to know wat the heck you do to be able to afford to do all this. I envy you a tad. Wonderful land, time to build, wife not fussing. Howd the whitetail hunt go btw
Great question! The short answer…we make it work. My wife and I both want a house here, so she’s supportive of the whole process, even though we have to be apart about a third of the time. We have no “extra” money, and I have zero extra time. I sleep 6 hours a night and work 12-14 hour days a lot. I work full time as a real estate agent on the coast, drive 6 hours one way to our property to video, and do 100% of all production/editing myself. Hopefully I’ll explain further in a video someday soon. And…no deer! I appreciate you asking and watching!🙏
@ 28:35 just came to mind, that the 1/4 inch difference towards the end may not be the gaps but the boards probably have some differences in widths from end to end that multiplies over the distance causing some of the discrepancies
wouldn't that interfear with the sky hooks you have to install on the end that you don't have any hangers installed on lol thats what you should have told that guy that asked the question
…I think I’ll go for a walk…. If it’s just a rivet coming loose pop it out or drill it out and put a slightly bigger one in. I’d rather fix my old belt vs the trouble of trying to find something new of any decent quality and then have to break it in.

Piece of junk countersink. I'd braze it if it mattered. Stilled worked without the fancy tang. But that's the drink that went with the astronauts to the moon!

I truly enjoy watching as well as learn tricks of the trade
Excellent! Glad you’re enjoying it.🙏
You did such a great job on the cabin I know this is going to be amazing 🥲!!!! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out until then stay safe stay healthy and god bless my friend 🙏❤️✌🏼
Much appreciated!! God bless. 🙏
I’m so fascinated by work. I could watch it all day. You’re doing good there. I’d like to move back to Montana some day.
Thank you so much! 🙏
Thanks for taking us along.

This made me laugh! Fred Moose…😂
Sounds like a nice cabin in the Arapaho. 🙏
Perkins Builders belt versatile and you only have buy the pouches you need.
That’s 2 for PB belts. I’ll look into them!
Until next week thanks again for sharing
Thanks for being here! 🙏
Received my Life on the Moose T shirt--excellent quality - true in size. lov from south alabama.
Excellent!! I appreciate you. 🙏
Another great project, Patrick! Kudos
Much appreciated!🙏

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I’ll look at it.
Happy 4th! 🙏
@@LifeontheMoose It certainly won`t cut you.

Perkins Brother Builders tool belts are awesome. I think you’d like it. Deck looks great Patrick. Man that’s a lot of steak! But it sure looked tasty!!!
Another nod to the PBB…thank you! And yes…I had enough steak left over for breakfast. 🙏
I'm inspired, thank you! Can't wait for next week 👍😊
Hey cool! Thank you for watching!🙏
Looking awesome
Thanks!
Looking great
Boards most commonly cup in the direction opposite the growth rings; that is, if you're looking at a smiley face, cupping will tend toward a frown.
Yes! I think I may have been holding my board upside down…🤔
I love cast iron and butter fried steak, the project is looking good. I wish I was there to help
Thank you so much! You may not be here, but indeed you’re helping. 🙏🙏
Thought half wall around kitchen then a good screen since it's a kitchen help keep the bugs out of your food while cooking.
Excellent video as always! 👍
For countersink drill repair - just drill hole from side in holder, tap it and screw in hex screw without head..
That would work. I’m thinking not quite worth the effort, as the countersink cost less than a new tap! I appreciate the suggestion.🙏
Blockings are called Dwangs here in Scotland , Noggings in England. Like you say, with 6x2 (we always put depth first😂) boards the blocking is an extra.

I like it! I believe more recommendations for PBB than anyone else. 🙏
and here I thought one of those steaks was for me! Looks good, enjoy 😊
I only ate half that second one! The rest was breakfast…🙏
Keep up the great work! Your videos are always entertaining and your hilarious personality keeps us coming back!
Thank you so much. Whatever the reason may be, I’m glad you keep coming back! 🙏🙏
Hey bro,
Put a band frame around the parameter. It may help the protect the cut ends and frame everything up!
Good suggestion!
I like Sleeping Bear Rock in the background.
I like that name! And I think I know which one you’re referring too…
@@LifeontheMoose @1:09 the rock just above your hand, you have a guid ane (good one).

Occidental makes good tool bags but they are not cheap. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! That makes 3 suggestions for OL so far. I’m looking into them. 🙏
When it comes to tool belts I lean toward the fancy because I'm in it for a really long time. Occidental Leather is my favorite.
Another OL mention…one I haven’t heard of. Thank you!
I've used them with just a little bit of tip. Sticking out, just put your drill, run your drill around it and use it that way. I don't know if you got a drill there that you can chuck it down on it, but that'll work because i've used them that way

I really look forward each week to you video's. Many thanks
Thank YOU for being here each week! 🙏
As a finished cabinet installer, I have sheared many of those countersink bits off. Especially with maple.I usually buy ten at a time.😁
Ah good to know. Yeah that maple is tough wood. 🙏
You know, I always seem to learn something from you on every video. I Thank You for that.
Wow that’s a great compliment. Thank YOU!🙏
It’s Friday
Been a long week
Just relaxed with your video
Thanks for the reset Patrick!
From Patrick in CT.
Hey Patrick from CT! Thank you so much. 🙏
Looks great. Maybe 1.5 full height walls to keep a full corner out of the wind?
Agree! 🙏
I gotta replace a few boards on my deck myself
In the Coast Guard we would measure with a micro-caliper, Mark with a piece of chalk, then cut it with an ax...
lol, sounds accurate!
you can always buy some cheap painters drop clothes and large wooden dowels and make some roll up sun shades/wind breaks for walls that get too much sun or wind

Its a really drafty building!

With new lumber you don't need an gap and with seasoned wood just drop a 8 penny nail between the deck boards.just nail down and pick up your nails
Boards all covered perfectly. Victory is the culmination of the mistakes you make a long the way. a wise man once said that. Well, not that wise because I just made it up... At least I think I did.

Indeed it did!

I’ve heard of them, but haven’t checked out their belt. I will! 🙏

THAT would be very neat. Good ideas!
With those vistas, any walls should be glass!
And that’s the crux of the debate!
The kitchen is looking good. As far as your walls, which direction does most of your weather come?
Thanks! Prevailing winds from the SW, where the short wall is. Probably the full one..
As altitude increases relative humidity decreases. So at altitude there is less oxygen per litre of air so the capacity of the air to hold moisture decreases.
Thank you! I was hoping to get some insight on that. 🙏
Darn, and I had a gift card with your name on it.
lol so thoughtful! You just go ahead and use it.

Diamondback makes awesome tool bags. They'll probably hook you up for free if they know you're a youtuber guy.

In a dry climate wood will not rot like in a more humid climate.
That is true!
wouldn't that interfear with the sky hooks you have to install on the end that you don't have any hangers installed on lol thats what you should have told that guy that asked the question
😂
At 3000 feet there is less moisture. Your dryer thus wood lasts longer, stays drier than lower levels.
Aha! I knew it…😅 Thanks!🙏
put a new rivet in and fix it. Put the solid wall on the west side
I will most likely take you up on at least one of your suggestions!
…I think I’ll go for a walk…. If it’s just a rivet coming loose pop it out or drill it out and put a slightly bigger one in. I’d rather fix my old belt vs the trouble of trying to find something new of any decent quality and then have to break it in.
If you don’t have rivets you can buy Chicago screws that you can install with a screwdriver and a drill bit or scratch awl
I should have mentioned, there are several reasons aside from the several rivets that needs replacing. You’re right…I am a bit concerned about breaking in a new one.
Thanks for the suggestion!
do you season your cast iron skillet?
Yes! It basically works as a non-stick pan now, with the right fat at a high enough temp.
Hope losing a wisdom tooth adds wisdom. It looks good!
I’m hoping the same! 🙏
hey Patrick, where are you located, near what city ??
I would consider the nearest “city” to be either Wenatchee or Spokane. I’m north of them along the Canadian border.
My belt like your has many decades of use and has succumbed to leather fatigue… LeathercraftI427X

About wisdom teeth. Im 53 and still have two of them.

E Washington.

A couple of wraps of electrical or duct tape around your pencil and you'll never drop it between the deck boards while using it as a splacer...
