    What is the easiest way to remove the spike mounts without damaging the shutter?

  • @allencrossland1973
    @allencrossland1973 2 года назад

    Okay, you said to use a 5/16 for a clearance hole for the plastic spikes, but I did hear what size you drill in your sheeting for the spikes. I have a 43 year old house with celotex sheeting. Will these spikes hold my shutters in wind?

  • @brianhollingsworth5947
    @brianhollingsworth5947 4 года назад +5

    When using a spike and attaching through vinyl siding, what do you do about the wood behind the vinyl? The spikes will only go so far into to vinyl before hitting the wood.

      I'm wondering the same thing, I had a couple spikes/fasteners break and I pushed them through with a screwdriver and hammer. Is that going to be a problem when I put them back on.?

  • @mickael486
    @mickael486 4 года назад +8

    The video mentions if using spikes drill a 5/16 hole in the shutter, NOT a 1/4 drill bit.
    And then the video says use a 1/4 drill bit for Spikes and put tape on the bit to help you only go so far for a clearance hole, but when the guy does it, it says to use a 5/16 bit again.
    I don't understand. At what point am I supposed to use the 1/4 drill bit for Spike mounting?

    • @djblock215
      @djblock215 7 дней назад

      @@Annie-px5nithe smaller bit goes into the siding and through the sheathing of the house. The spikes grab onto the siding and the sheathing to hold. The hole has to be smaller for the most grab of the spikes

    How hard do you hammer in the screws so you dont break the window? I already broke 2 windows and fell off the roof once. Its hard hanging a ladder from the gutters, i dont see how people do it all the time.. i tried mounting them with super glue but is too hard to hold them in place for as long as the ue sets up so been trying to get the screws hammered in..

    I would love an answer to the question about only drilling through the vinyl siding and not the wall. Where is the rest of the fastener going to go? Is it only held on by the vinyl siding?

    • @Rychster
      @Rychster 2 месяца назад

      He mentions the critical step of drilling 1-3/4 inches in the siding with the proper diameter bit but does not show it on the video. That drilling does hit the wood underneath the siding at the proper depth. Bad video for something so critical to the process. Then he shows only the drilling of the final sized hole in the siding only. That is because the tighter fit is in the wood and he doesn't want you to drill it with the bigger bit, hence only drill the siding at that point.

    great video! just a quick question though, my house is made out of brick should I use the plastic spikes or the metal screws?

    • @perfectshuttersinc8274
      @perfectshuttersinc8274  5 лет назад +1

      If your house is made of brick, we would recommend using the vinyl shutter spikes. You can use the metal screws with brick, but would also need to use an anchor with each screw. Hope this helps!

    Not installing on siding or brick , but on stucco do I use the same instruction as if installing on siding ?

  • @sbchannel7006
    @sbchannel7006 5 лет назад

    I'm curious about the expansion and contraction of the vinyl siding. With the screws or spikes installed through the shutters and into the siding, the vinyl siding will be unable to expand or contract without buckling.

    • @perfectshuttersinc8274
      @perfectshuttersinc8274  5 лет назад

      If you use the proper drill bits for drilling through shutters/siding and beyond the siding into the house, the screws or spikes should be tight in the house but have some play at or near the siding and shutters. This extra space allows for the expansion/contraction of the siding/shutters!Hope this helps clarify!

    • @sbchannel7006
      @sbchannel7006 5 лет назад

      @@perfectshuttersinc8274 yes, this makes sense, the holes in the vinyl siding are bigger than the screw or spike allowing for movement of the vinyl. Thanks!

    • @gokblok

      1/4 hole in the shutter is so the threads of a panhead screw will clear the shutter. 5/16 hole is for the spike. 1/8 hole is the pilot (in the siding) for the panhead screws.

    • @sundown798
      @sundown798 5 лет назад +3

      @@gokblok Actually just threw up 7 Pairs. The ones from home depot vinyl.shutters come with the plastic spikes or the screws. In that kit, and most you drill your 1/4 inch holes in the shutters. Line up the shutter and drill 3" 1/4 into the vinyl with the 1/4 inch again. . Tap the spike carefully with a hammer. Rediculously easy took a couple hours installing 7 pairs and 4 on a second story.
