Hi there, I have a 1999 automatic CRV that needs a rear diff replacement. Only ones I can find on ebay are from manual CRVs, can I replace my diff from my auto with the diff from a manual? same generation of car of course. Thanks so much
The differential was fine and did not need replacing. You found the real problem at 1:45 but since you do not know what you are doing you did not know it. It's called the "rear differential damper" and that's all it needed. Also, you can only use Genuine Honda Dual Pump Fluid in a Honda PERIOD.
That part you took off at 355. What is this part, what does it do and do you really need it. Mine has this same part worn out like yours. Replace it or trash it?
I noticed you just threw it on? No new seals no nothing ? Did the differential have any trouble or was it fine the way it was ? I ask because I’m getting a used differential and I’m wondering if going over would be overkill
Will changing the fluid stop the howling when vehicle speed increases or can you rebuild it with all new bearings or is it easier just to get a whole new one
Make sure you use new crush washers on the drain/fill plugs, and burnish the clutch after changing diff fluid. I would also recommend putting the lug nuts back on the studs if you're swinging a hammer to prevent thread damage, that way you can use a mini sledge vs a mallet.
What if you have burnished and changed fluid but still acts like plates are sticking together bad catching and releasing to the point you about can't give it gas motor won't over power it either
The fluid in my deferential (1999..CR-V) looks like Coffee with Cream (lite Mocha) coming out. I have changed it twice. Can water get into it. What is my problem? I got lots of noise too.
Nice video bro! Question: i have a 97 crv and my user manual says to use atf fluid to rear differential but you use dual pump fluid, do you know this difference? Both work?
It's probably too late, but use DPF II. The manual can help a lot, but with my experience, it is not exactly accurate s lot of the time. Example: I changed out my CV axle and hub assembly, and the spindle nut alone was labeled 24mm, when it was 36mm. You should always look up other people's experiences when working on your vehicle.
Hey I have a problem I started hearing a grinding noise from my differential I took off the shift and to eliminate the differential when I put the car in drive it wouldn't move do you have any advice, do I have to take off the differential for the car to move? It's a 1999 honda crv
How can I tell if my rear differential has gone bad? You mentioned clunking noise. My drive shaft continues to spin while in drive gear with my foot of the brake pedal. Yes, makes a clunking noise while driving and continues to roll while in Park gear. Has 268K miles on the car. Thanks Gary
@@hondaresource i know for the diff fluid i was wondering how much I would need when I change the power steering fluid just got a crv so trying to do as much as i can
@@danielsmith6539 I don't honestly know the total capacity right off. I generally buy my Honda PS fluid at O'Reilly's since they are the only place I've found that carries quart size containers.
A little problem about spacer want to clarify . Have anyone try to install the spacer on rear wheel only on CRV rd1,Did that cause any problem or damaged to the differential work due to drive? I am planning to install a pair of 15mm spacer on rear wheel of my CRV rd1 so really want to clarify this matter.
spacer has nothing to do with the differential. If anything it may put just a little more stress on the wheel bearing. 15mm is pretty minimal for a spacer.
Hey kind of new to youre page. I've been having problems replacing my slave cylinder and liked the way you explained the valve cover replacement. Can you do a video on how to replace a slave cylinder for a first gen crv 5spd manual awd? P.s. nice work on the awd civic!!!
Do 2nd gen and element diffs line up and have the same spline count for the 3 shafts?? I actually just noticed a rotating clicking noise under the center or near the rear upon load at lower speeds low rpm. Driveshaft or diff, I don't know yet 🤷
I can't tell you enough how much your work is appreciated.
Another "thumbs" up!
Cheers

🤣🤣🤣🤣toss that damper on the trash, it's not needed. I'm aware of what fluid goes in it.

This one worked perfectly. As long as the seals on the one you're installing aren't hard or torn I would leave them alone!
@@hondaresource Thanks ! I'll keep that in mind really appreciate the quick reply

Usually if it's not worn out, the howling stops with fresh fluid.

Good visuals, thanks for uploading. Keep up the good work.
Do you think I can replace those two mount bushings without taking it all apart?
Probably so

Maybe if you are putting it in deep water
I have a car of CR-V RD1 Honda. The 2 wheel at the back are bit lay . How can we straighten up?

Thanks for the advice. At the end I could get Acura diff fluid to use ❤
Awesome video. QQ..if you need to replace just the rubber rear differential mount, is it as easy as replacing the the damper that's attached to it??
Yeah should be

I would check your front axles to make sure they are both good. If one is broken and you remove the driveshaft, it wont move.
@@hondaresource thank you
Hello, was this an automatic or a standard transmission CRV, please? Nice video. Wish I had a lift !!!
The automatic and manual share the same rear diff.
I found out I also need a driveshaft. Do you know if the driveshaft is the same part for an automatic or manual transmission?
Yes, it is.
My diff plate needs bushing on my 06 crv. What should i do??? Find new bushing or try to find the diff plate with the new bushing already in
The bushing are replaceable and available through Honda
@@hondaresource sooooooo dont buy the cheap ebay brand????
@@millcitychris4303 you can

Usually if the diff is bad it'll pop. Some whining in a tight turn is normal.
Thanks for the video helps out alot
Very reassuring. Quick paint job and I’ll have to throw mine in. You seem to be a pretty solid guy.
Great video! Why not replace the upper mount bushings? It appeared cracked.
Customer didn't want to spend any more money.
Thanks, used this to fix my Element
How about just replacing a rear axle shaft? Still have to remove the 3rd member? Thanks!
if you are just replacing the cv shaft, you can just removed the lower control arm and the spindle will swing out far enough to get the axle out
How can i tell if i need to just replace the fluid or replace the diff? Mine was making a grinding noise in the back upon acceleration?
generally, grinding or popping = replace. A whine when it engages = fluid
@@hondaresource ok thanks how much power steering fluid is needed I need to refill mine
@@danielsmith6539 it takes dual pump fluid, 1.2 quarts I believe

thank's for mounting advice
You should’ve flushed the differential fluid a few times before replacing.. the fluid has to be from Honda to silence the humming when driving
I always use Honda dual pump fluid. The recommended method is drain and refill.
I have a 97 Honda CRV also I'm taking differential out for good how do I make axle stubs that are rear drive shafts
Just get some from the junkyard out of a fwd model
What about gutting my rear axles and use them as a axle stub to support wheel bearing have I seen this before done
@@derekwilson8011 you can also do that
Ok thanks again
I'm removing rear end in my '97 can I use rear axle for stub to bolt wheel back on after I got the drive shaft if that's possible
Thanks for the video. Makes perfect sense
Glad it was helpful!
Good job
Thank you
What lift is that ?

There is a video on my channel of me doing it on a prelude. The process is very similar. Manual Crv's are pretty rare around here.

Probably an element rear diff since those bite like a mf compared to the 1st gen crv rear diff.
