Even though it seems like a life altering failure he cared enough to listen and gave you game. Props to you for taking the moment as a learning opportunity and moving forward. This is inspirational. Thank you!
Yessir it was humbling
No different than being a good college football player & then going to work out for Belichek or pick an NFL team. The difference between college & pro levels is substantial. You might be good , but are you ready. Dope story, its inspiring !!
What’s crazy is I had a friend named Andre that I found out that raps when I moved to Atlanta, when I got back to ny I played him some of my beats and he said they sound mad generic and one dimensional, I kept a straight face but I was floored.. they was my bangers, I thought was straight fire.. ever since then I’m tried to add layers of sauce to my bears. looking back at them beats not lol he wasn’t lying.😅
When I first got into hip hop, producers had their own sound. You could listen to a beat and you could tell if it was by Dre, Timbaland, Havoc, RZA, Premier etc, just by the way it sounded. You can’t say the same about the beats made today. They’re all really similar and there’s nothing that really helps you identify who made it unless they say “Zombie on the track” or “DJ KHALID” at the beginning of something.
It's important to remember that Dre doesn't even like his own beats lmao, he said in 2020 he made like 300 songs, but we ain't hearing them 😂the man has an ear and holds himself to that high level too, it's his blessing and his curse
Remember Ill, you actually make beats unlike Dre.
Word
That’s exactly right…
I can understand the deep need to be super original, but sometimes, the beat is just a beat and it’s about what the artist brings to it.
From there, you change things up after the vocal is down.
@@bangmateo7481 what an ignorant comment based on some stupid myth that Dre doesn't make beats smh
@davidanugo Scott Storch, for example, can play all your favorite Dre songs you know why? Because he created the melodies.
It takes a lot of character and discipline to turn such an experience into a lesson. How good must it feel when he liked your beats years later?
It was wild! Came back stronger and that built my confidence even more
@@IllMindproducer Curious to know what "key" or "scale" Dre mention he likes to use?
@@MrAnutha1 d sharp minor works for everyone, scott storch's favourite
You should play us some of those beats. I’m curious how big the disconnect was between what you were making and what Dre was after
yeah i'd love to hear them
I would love to hear what Dre listened to by him! For him to even play them beats for Dre they must have been somewhat halfway decent?
yup we need to hear those 5, 6 beats so we can make an opinion too
Let'sgoooo
@@sidekick4 huh it’s a learning opportunity? Ill’s business if he wants to share or not and I don’t expect him to.
Play us them beats u played dre. Let's us be the judge now
I really respect his honesty. It's always easy to nod your head to someone's beats you've just met even if you don't like them, but he respected you enough to give you his real take - and it helped you out in the end too. Super inspiring
I appreciate this. All too often it seems like everyone wants what has already been done. To hear that someone like Dre wants a unique sound or something new is very inspiring.
Exactly
Dre can be very particular with his beats, i remember hearing Just Blaze saying he had a beat for Dre for the Detox album but that beat landed on Ushers album Confessions, the song was "Throwback" ft Jadakiss, it sounds like a beat Dr Dre would rap on 😂
i can totally hear him over this beat
That’s probably why he didn’t want it he had that beat already made
Let’s be honest. The best beats Dr Dre produced was when he had Scott Storch on the keys and Mike Elizondo on the bass. Since then. He hasn’t done much. 🤷🏻♂️
Hell of a story man. I know it had to hurt. But think of it this way: This video would have 1/3rd the views it does if it was called "Dr Dre liked my beats." We'd all shrug and keep scrolling. But you gave us an honest story, and got some real feedback from arguably the greatest hip-hop artist ever. Also it goes without saying, but Dr. Dre's opinion is still just an opinion.
DRE was always looking for ghost producers lol. Why would a famous producer want to listen to the beats of other up and comer producer?
There’s a difference between hating and not choosing a dope beat. I can see how Dre may have come off at first but he was honest AND gave a critique. Cool video.
Constructive criticism.... Gotta be intelligent (or Ill-telligent in this case) to absorb it & grow from it. Awesome story !!
So fire. Reminds me or Herbie Hancock telling the story of when Myles Davis said “Don’t play the butter notes.” Basically “dont play the obvious.”
What key does Dre like?! That’s interesting content right there
You should've replied with "Well, let's hear some of your beats then" lol
Dre a legend…but imagine if he didn’t have a Scott Storch, DJ Quik, Daz, Mel Man & Mike Elizondo??? He would be just considered a legendary engineer 🤷🏾♂️
I don't think so fam. I assume as you are aware, those guys were amazing musicians and great keyboardist and bass players but..sometimes great musicians struggle with keeping it simple. I think those guys added great value to the musicianship of his work but the direction of those beats were spearheaded by Dre. He was the conductor. He's a true producer. Every time a Dre beat came on, you could hear that Dre sound. You knew when he had something to do with it. Whether Scott was on keys or Mike, you knew it was Dre behind the vibe.
He didnt have any of them when he built ruthless from the ground up with hit after hit
He would be considered a legendary producer like Quincy Jones
Btw if the mix engineer doesn’t play an instrument or touch a pad but is responsible for the session, the arrangement and final composition then he is also the producer
Thats curious considering Dre himself hasnt thought outside of the box for well over 2 decades...maybe 2 and a half. He hits the same predictable repetitive rudimentary notes on ALL his beats. So overrated. Hes still floating off his work from 3 or 4 albums in the early 90's... Nothing noteworthy after that.
Saying it’s nothing I haven’t heard before in 2023 is like saying the sky is blue though. But maybe it was different in 2014.
If Dre had of heard something he liked he would of signed you to aftermath for 3/4 years to work on bishop lamont’s album or slim the mobster’s …then drop you. Dre’s a legend but when I go to iTunes his solo catalogue is terrible, quantity wise.
1: Dre obviously had learned to be that honest during his career, before you even have a chance to make it in the biz and he showed you respect by not bullshitting you out some form of courtesy.
2: I guess you grew up faster than if you had never met him.
Yes, thinking outside the box is basically always the best way to improve.
Kind of a weird comment coming from Dre because he hasn't really done anything in recent years that hasn't been done before. Generic beats, raps ect. I mean he literally replays stuff chord for chord melody for melody when he produces. Maybe he re do's the drums but that's about it. Just my opinion.
Dre also didn’t like Regulate when Warren G first played it for him and that song became an anthem when it hit the streets. Our heroes can be flat out wrong. Or just because they aren’t feeling a track for them doesn’t mean the masses won’t vibe with it.
Who care if he likes the beats or not its ine thing to take technical advice to make your soind better but your beats are your beats ....his opinion dosent matter ...takes away the creative flow ...kimda defeats the purpose of making music...
I can't imagine what it felt like when he didn't like your beats man, that's enough to crush anyone. I'm glad you had the perseverance and determination years later to change his mind though. Inspiring man, thank you.
It's funny, all these guys say they are looking for something unique from a producer, yet all the songs playing on the radio aren't unique.
Nice. More stories would be appreciated. That feeling when u meet a well known producer and they don't like your beats. Been there before 😅. I just went back home and made more beats to improve
Always gotta improve
Yo Ill-Mind, I don't necessarily think he hated your beats. I think he was trying to push you to be more creative and make better beats.. In which you made better beats, and he was able to use 2 of your beats so he can record on. DOPE!!
but Dr dre samples all his work thats why we call him a sample god none of his beats are Original
Every single time I have gotten a critique from someone I’ve always improved to a level unseen before the criticism! Critics made me a MONSTER! I relish in it!
I agree that dr dre is a legend but I feel dj quik is just as good if not better producer than dre!
This is why we need less yes men in our lives. Not to put us down but to level us up. Good story.
Great story mate, love your beats for 50 ("All His Love" and "On Everything").
I respect you very much, and you always give back or in tune with your core fanbase -- however, your beats STILL aren't that good .
I remember the humble arrogance you had (and even more-so the people around you) in 2011 at an event in NYC , you played a beat that you submitted for Watch The Throne , and A-King (the host) was d!ck riding like "brand new off The Watch The Throne album!" and it gassed the entire crowd ...and I'm just like "🤦♂". The beat used the same drums from "Power/Crck Music" -- it had a John Legend reference vocal
I remember buying the album partially just to see if that was actually placed
... there was always full of sh!t vibes ..but I respect you bc you've been doing it for a while and became a teacher at NYU
Only 12 years ago I think I got a bit better since then.. much love
That is not failure, it was learning lesson that changed your life! Salute
I use to be a Dre fan then I realized he uses ghost producers and really talent musicians that come up with great ideas that he calls his own. Once I found that out I never really vibes with his music anymore. It was a blessing things worked out that way for you.
Peep the credits for all the albums and tracks that dropped back then and you'll see credits for everyone. That's not a ghost producer. Dre is just the Quincy Jones of Hip-Hop. Quincy doesn't make records in a room by himself with an mpc and a keyboard. He tells the musicians what to play.
All the big time producers do the same thing. They all used to be beat makers and they earned their respect. When they reach a level they start hiring talent from Southside 808 mafia, Scott Storch, to Louie Vega the house music legend. They now compose the beat using other peoples talent and they may add the finishing touches
What Was The Beats You've Played For Dre ?
He did that to push you, fam. He heard the potential and what it was. That on his phone stuff, looking bored…that was a tactic. That’s his brilliance. And look at you now. What a moment. Thank you for sharing, bro! Incredibly dope story.
Nah that was Gods tactic thru dre. Dre was just being natural but illmind caught the divine message
@@bulbasewer not mad at this at all. 100% fact. All praises due to The Almighty!
You didn’t have anything he could steal lol.
Kaytranada turned down a Dre session because he felt he wasn’t ready because Dre so intense
Bro mad respect!!! This is such an important lesson. Any situation can be turned into a lesson and a positive. I always think of that scene in the Kanye documentary when Scarface comes into the studio and Kanye’s playing him beats to get on, and he doesn’t want to get on any of them, but he said the beats are dope, and Kanye just focuses on the fact he said they were dope, not the fact that he turned down what he initially came in for. Mindset is everything. Thanks for sharing this experience, super motivating and a great reminder to push a unique wave 🙌🏻
Dre beat me in basketball..said.."game..blouses"..then served me pancakes.
Great story...Keep them coming🙏🏾
Before I have groupies jump in my comments.
We all know Dr. Dre is a legend.
But just because your legend doesn’t always mean you’re right .
Dre pretending like he wasn't interested, he was recording ya beats on his phone
@@marvin469 🤣
Love these types of stories...inspired to do better music
dont worry dre dont even make beats
*Dre’s a dope producer but he’s honestly overrated,* but Honestly Battle Cat, Q-Tip, Daz, J.Cole, DJ Quick, QD3, Hurt-M-Badd are nester in regards of originality & most ppl don’t know that Dre took credit credit for a lot of ppl’s beats especially on Deathrow!
Mainly Daz & DJ Quick Beats! 2Pac & Suge Both Exposed Dre for taking credit of other producer beats.
Bro stay up, and keep making your beats, because theirs always Simone that Fuckz with your material 💯💯💯💯 Peace & Light ☀️
keep working your stuff will be good someday
Cool story. You a real one. Furthermore think about that..Dre is a perfectionist, in every single detail. He has hundreds of unreleased song and beats, a lot of his beats came out because the rapper himself wanted it, like 3/4 of the documentary beats. Dre don’t like his own music and he never made co produced beats, only still dre with scott storch.
Sorry for my grammar, luv from Italy
Shouts to Dre for not sugarcoating it. We all need that & for the record (no pun) I’ve always liked your sound. Gr8 storytime man.
no cap, but does Dre even make his own beats anymore?
he tweaks other beats
Now I wanna know which beats were played. I'd put money on it 'Mug Shots' wasn't one of them. Dre couldn't say he heard something like that before.
one of mine almost made the compton album. i was at the studio with them for 2 days and it didnt make it in the end. i was absolutely gutted.
It'd be fine if Dre says that, I would be more worried if DJ Premier or Ye' said it to me though! lol 👍🏼🫡😁
I love how people just create this circle on these stories. Let's just erase all these layers because if there's 1ofthemandtheyareaccomplishedtosharewithapprovalofeachother. Then they are in it together.
My dream is to collab with the Legendary Filipino ILL Mind ! Kabayan Idol!
Dr. Dre, the guy who became famous stealing music from Parliament-Funkadelic😉😉
Honestly 95% of the beats these days are all the same…. No one thinks about more overlooked producers like Prince Paul, El-P, RJD2, blockhead Def Jux era, Madlib, Doom and shit even DJ Paul where they were really trying new things… producing and just music in general has become so accessible that everything sounds the same because everything can be mimicked so easily. Music mike technology seems stagnant right now which is probably why Dre is just holding back..
Can you show us the beats you played him 💪🙏 there’s a producer called HorrorScene doing Drill wave beats. Never heard anything like it
!llmind, could I ask you what piano sample you used on Unseen's 'Keep Movin'? That beat was ridiculously gorgeous.
I loved this story, but I think there's something to think about here. He didn't like your beats, but does that mean they weren't good? I haven't heard them, but I don't think so. The ending of this seems funny, you make it seem like a victory that he FINALLY liked your beats years later, and that it changed your perspective, but I ask you, was it for the good? In what way did it change? I get the feeling that it started to become more about external validation and less about doing what you feel is cool. I make beats aswell, I have a couple, they aren't at the level of Dre you could say, but I like them, and I think that's the most important part. Dre is just a human after all, with his own taste and opinions, and I think that voice shouldn't dictate you in a way that is not coherent to your actual artistic desires, or at least I hope that's not the case. At the end of the day, Dre wasn't responsible for your evolution, you were. He just stated his opinion and you turned that as a lesson. I just hope his voice isn't limiting your creativity every time you want to do something. You don't have to be super original all the time or do something crazy, a lot of the times we over complicate things for the sake of the ego, and we have to be mindful of that. Just some thoughts and reflexions in regard to filtering feedback and such, since I've been dealing with this lately. Nice video! 💜
PS: I just found out you were responsible for the Love Yourz beat. Man, I have to give you ultimate props for that, what an inspiration 🙏💯
Dr Dre is a studio gangster and sold his soul don't listen to him
Cool beats, Ill Mind. Want to bring them to the White House? We should inspire more producers like you to make beats. It's what makes America great.
Dre barely likes his own beats😂😂😂still waiting on detox!!!!!!!
And this mattered because...?
I'm glad you took it on the chin, but his opinion is just that.
I would be more understanding if you were shopping beats for him specifically, but it wasn't remotely the case, and it's fine if he didn't like anything because it's subjective.
So what he ain't like your beats. Somebody will he really ain't the best BEAT maker on the planet. I find better beats on RUclips.
That's the problem with 99% of the music out there right now. They're all just followers dude. A lot of things that we hear in the mainstream/what's popular for any type of music are SO played out.
I'd agree with Dre.
Hate to sound like a dick, but why would he buy these beats or anybody else's in the industry right now unless of course Dre got into EDM or Trip-Hop.
Dre's beats are dynamic and the rappers he signs are catchy. Songs like "How Many" are boring and the for some reason the beat seems filtered down so it's outdated in not one but TWO ways. So yeah, if you want to get Dr. Dre's attention you need to evolve to something that isn't played out and sounding like the same ole trap beats we've been hearing for the past 16 years.
The needs of the upcoming generation are going to be A LOT different. These kids are wanting music to sound like the opposite of what mainstream sounds like now. It's time for everybody to think outside the box and get extra weird. You're gonna need to pretty soon.
Fam😆you ain't do no samples!!! He wasn't interested..🤫real talk yall ..
kind of hypocritical for dre to say its nothing he hasnt heard before, all his hits are samples of songs other people made. i cant name pretty much any hits he created from scratch really. you could of said the same about him lol
He did not like Warren G's & Nate Dogg's'Regulate'...and then...😊
He's just an old head today, he might be a legend but music doesn't revolve over his taste, what he likes or not. You don't like it, some people do. If you believe in your stuff, even King Kong with a machine gun can't change your mind.
I’ve been following your career ever since you worked with akrobatik
🧢 ?the title was for Clickbait, sounded like he didn’t hate them. Your production sounded like everybody else’s.
Bro I liked the vid apart from the voice over bits….I found them distracting and a lil annoying. Great story though and thank you for sharing.
Does Dre even make beats? He just takes whole songs from other musicians and removes the vocals then calls it a beat. Nothing But G Thing is a total rip. He was probably looking for something to copy by a inviting you to the studio
Whats funny is that a lot of dres beats aint even all that either.. whooops.. 😂… we need to stop looking at dre as this model for hip hop when he aint even hip hop he’s gangster rap-r&b pop.. lol “if you go platinum its got nothing to do with luck, it just means that a million people are stupid as fhuck” - immortal technique
It’s cool that’s why it’s ART.
The ultimate subjective.
That's tough. But Dre is super critical. I really wonder how these beats sound.
If you are creating your art for someone else, you are in a world of hurt eventually. Being a "sell out" with your art doesn't have anything to do with actual money. It almost always reflects itself in the art created to those that consume large amounts of it. Create for yourself, let the chips fall where they fall with consumers. This way, you will always enjoy the creative process, and stay free with your art always revealing your own expressiveness, unhampered, unfiltered, and unchecked.
This is why you creagte your own lane - remember that,,,, especially now take advice and move on
I would've been shook if Dre wanted to hear my beats too! If only you had played each beat, turned around to look at him to get a reaction from him and maybe asking for his opinion, you'd probably know and maybe get a sense of it was 👍🏽 or 👎🏾 for him. At any rate, I'm glad he still hooked up with you and used some of your beats! 🔥 Keep doing your thing paré, you're a huge inspiration! ✌🏽🇵🇭
Dre dont really make his own beats post NWA anyway, hes more just working off of ideas he picks up from other producers. He picks a dope and rare idea and then polishes it so its more commercially up to date according to his experience and taste.
Wow! It's funny, I had the same kind of experience with Eric Bellinger a couple years back. The guy was nice enough to mention strong aspects of my beats but then he gave me more or less the same advice: what I gave him wasn't new/fresh/unique enough. I still have to reach the level you're on though...
Dr. Dre don’t like your beats…. But he did’nt even make 75% of beats he gets credit for. He wasn’t impressed cause he couldn’t buy you out and sell it as his own. That means you you do something right.
Sometimes the idols you meet aren't as perfect as you seem. I respect Dr. Dre for his influence on music, but he is also known for hiring ghost producers and slapping his name on them. Bro hasn't even released proper music in years but blames it on perfectionism - which is cap. He became stagnant and lost his magic touch, if it was as real as he claimed it to be.
Dr dre forced someone to say "yeah" in a studio nearly 150 times over 5 hours. He most likely has OCD.
but dre dont make half the beats he puts out heck "still dre" was wrote by jayz and beat was made by scott storch😂😂😢 lol
It's important to remember that Dre doesn't even like his own beats lmao, he said in 2020 he made like 300 songs, but we ain't hearing them 😂the man has an ear and holds himself to that high level too, it's his blessing and his curse
Fun fact: Dr. Dre is Lil Bow Wow’s father. There I told you.
Sucks that he’s a gatekeeper on the west coast cause a lot of great producers and artists from LA got swept into time. And for anyone born and raised in La that loves hip hop knows that whole culture is goofy anyway.
If Dre don't like your beats, it's possible that said beats are whack AF
Yeah as a artists and producer not close to levels of dre.. but when i hear other beats i don't hate or super like for myself or my artists. If i do not get them they usually get really mad at me and say I'm a Hater or i suck, because i won't buy or use theirs. It isn't that but like dre and others, i can get that on the music sites if i want that same 808 kick beat that's a West Coast sound. Everyone's the same over all using same samples from same Package they all bought from someone. It isn't hating, just i can get the same. I don't like mine, why because they mine. Others like it and I'm EH... I think a lot of producers listening to it over and over so many times its Whatever to us. Some we may say damn IM DOPE and like that beat, year later Eh.
So many people can male beats and we always imagine our beats to be unique to so many others and the way he said its like everything else he's heard, it's not that he dosent like it, it's that it dosent bring that Hit material, Dr Dre is a sound engineer his samples and beats are equalised in such a way that shows experience in how to manipulate the sound not just putting together instruments, melody and beat, I make beats, and I never pursued it to think its gonna be a successful career, very competitive and you need alot of money to have the best equipment so it sounds better than others.
crazy how generic everyone wanting to be "different" now is. always on the outside looking in.
I had a similar story and took it completely the wrong way! Ha! Sent into spiralling depression which left me somewhat isolated. It's nice to hear someone won where I lost!
