How come I listened to this ambience at 00.35 and it really scared me, my room is close to my parents' room and I live in the village. And I'm not going to lie I listened to this for 5 minutes it scared me AF💀
Me, age 13, 2004. I was playing this game on my uncle's computer. The moment I walked out to be met with the haunting soundtrack and the sight of the legs swinging on the tree I knew I had stepped in the shit. Ravenholm has haunted me for nearly 20 years now. Its soundtrack randomly playing in my head. The abandoned buildings. The unknown lore with failed spin off games or mediocre mods. Ravenholm is still one of my favorite levels in video game history that is begging to have more explored.
Ravenholm is like the after effect on what is going on in City 17, the giant wars between the combine and the citizens, but when you go to Ravenholm you return to a abandoned ghost town inhabited by only zombies and headcrabs, it's creepy because of what I said, I say that the after effect of a war, its sad because Ravenholm was once somebody's home, but instead all is it a empty town now only inhabited by one guy, Father Grigori. By far one the best games on Steam.
@@MajinMist603 I live in Chicago and xenian life forms are normal thing here lol, they are our pets, my pet is a barnacle and a poison head, also my neighbor tamed a gargantuan!! And my grandma managed to capture a race x shocktrooper and a vorltigore and she tamed them, they always helps her in grocery! =D
@@VirtualBliss888 Detroit legitimately looks like a warzone, or I should say, any city in the continent of Africa. Innercity Chicago, Philadelphia, NY etc all look like this too but Detroit is definitely one of if not the worst.
Well done brother! Make free use of my traps, but take care not to fall in them yourself. Behind you! In Ravenholm you do well. Better than better! I am father Grigori. You have already met my congregation.
This ambience plays on every zombie map for CSS, it's amazing ambience is what made me so immersed into that gamemode, it felt like you were actually surviving in the apocalypse, sadly it's all gone now.
0:37 I've always wanted to know, what kind of zombie or "monster" would make that scream so disturbing, it seems the scream warns of something worse to come
3:18 girl screaming like a 9 year old girl and basically she's scared going through the Ravenholms and crying and screaming for help being by zombies or something
I also like how right after you hear the poison zombie, whether that's intentional or not I still like the timing, as if it found the girl after she screamed.
Maybe it's not a child at all, but a representation of Gordon's growing paranoia and fear. or plot twist: gman stepped on a lego trying to stalk you all creepy-like.
Ravenholm was people’s home, and they were in a war against the Combine. But it became a ghost town only inhabited by zombies and those headcrabs. With only guy that still lived there.
At least I’m not the only one that likes the sounds of ravenholm. Something different about the ambience of this spooky town that makes you feel relaxed and makes you forget all the horrors of the real life world.
Remember this as a kid? My older bro got it when it came out and I think it was xbox 360 or maybe even the original Xbox. Ravenholm along with that tunnel mission💀
My theory on some of the wailing sounds and screaming and crying is that (1) these are zombie types that were never seen or (2) these are like the screams of old citizens during the combine/zombie invasion and them being killed or (3) these are ghosts of citizens reliving their haunted past
@@chickenkid7072 this sound doesnt belong to fast zombie because so deep sound. My opinion this sound belongs a never seen zombie because fast zombie s voice is such not deep and other poison zombie s sound voice is such not thin
Might be a bit of a hot take but I think this ambiance is more effectively unnerving in Portal 1's testing chambers after I discovered it borrowed it when you're on the down low and not doing much to complete the test, but just letting the ambiance fill the room. Much like Ravenholm, you're practically alone but instead, you're underground and confined in these cold white testing rooms with your only company being a rogue AI that's always watching you on the cameras. The only signs of organic life are mad scribbled drawings from the Ratman but you don't even know where he is in the facility, or if he's someone to be trusted initially. It also doesn't help that later in the game when you're escaping from GLaDOS, you crawl your way behind the testing rooms and into the building structures, the large machinery banging and clattering against each other echoes throughout Aperture, implying that this place is pretty massive, and that you're only in a fraction of the entire place.
ravenholm is great because it's the part of the game where you REALLY start to understand the implications of what happened. city 17 and the canals feel dystopian sure, but this is just a town that has been totally upended. they did nothing wrong, and now they are suffering an eternal hell from the headcrabs. powerful stuff.
When I played through Ravenholm, when I heard these ambient sounds, I immediately thought of Portal. I only started going through this game recently. Currently at Highway 17. Glad I'm not grinding Ravenholm rn.
i actually heard this ambience while playing portal's advanced test chamber 18. maybe it's because portal is actually after the seven hour war and this is actually the ambience of dying humanity
1:00 is it just me or i often hear this sound in other Valve games that use the source engine. i swear. i be playing l4d2 and i hear this out of nowhere. even in Portal.
Yea Valve uses a lot of ambient tracks from Half Life in L4D and Portal in the 4th Chapter of No Mercy you can hear the little faint sounds and a few others even outside you hear some of the ambience
Man, i would LOVE to see a mod which takes a lore friendly look on how the life in Ravenholm was and then see how everything went to shit with the headcrab pots.
they did use this for portal but with the screams and crying it would be genuinely terrifying to know that there would have been other test subjects suffering behind the walls of a test chamber
I think maybe the devs could have taken inspiration from pripyat ukraine when designing ravenholm since hl2 does take place in eastern europe so maybe?????
Even now, Escape from Ravenholm is my least favorite chapter. Mostly cause I dont really like zombies, and the constant chaotic noise they made. Could never get a moments peace

@blobalob a lot of assets from hl2 were re-used for Portal, since the first game was just intended to be a small tech demo
its also reused in L4D2 in the map "The Parish" althought sometimes you can hear the weird growling and sobbing noises in apartments
