Information to enrich your experience: Hades' helm is as important as Zeus' Master Bolt. In the war against the Titans, the gods received help from the Cyclopes, and the Cyclopes forged three weapons for the three male sons of Cronus - which would become known as their symbols of power: the Master Bolt for Zeus, the Helm of Darkness for Hades, and the Trident for Poseidon.
The plot is complex, it's on purpoise don't worry. :) Even in the book, we didn't understand everything until the last pages, and some things will be explained next season. So far : Hades thought Percy had stolen his helmet to steal the bolt. He kidnapped Percy's mother to get his property back. Ares gave Percy a bag with food, etc... and the bolt was teleported in this bag when they reached the Tartarus pit in which Grover nearly fall into. Strange, isn't it ? The heavy bolt wasn't in the bag before. Luckily, the flying shoes didn't fit well on Grover's goat feet. I like that you understand the mother-son struggles with school. I've seen reactors laughing at this saying : "Which school would refuse a nice kid like this ! It's so fake !" And this lack of empathy triggered me so much as a mother. The plot is definitely confusing, and it’s meant to be. So, don’t worry! The season finale should clear things up for you and hopefully, future seasons will continue to reveal answers!
I feel from the dialogue between Hades and Percy and Grover that Athena stole Hades Helm and used it to steal the master bolt from Zeus and give it to her brother Ares. Athena then gave the helm (Yankees hat) to Annabeth to hide the fact that she (Athena) stole the master bolt.
