    One other thing I have noticed is the phone battery discharges rapidly when connected with a cable to the remote. Not sure but maybe the remote views the phone as a source of charging when connected by the cable.

    This cable connection is not a "hack"...it's a bypass...😉

    • @DennisLovelady
      @DennisLovelady 7 лет назад +4

      Staf VH is partially correct, but It's not even a bypass, really. Clearly, if DJI had not intended that to work, nothing we try could have made it so. DJI caused that image feed to be replicated on the USB port, perhaps in keeping with the Mavic approach, or perhaps for another reason. But the point is that DJI does provide the feed there. Adding to that, like it or not, wired connection will always, always, always trump wireless from a strength and stability standpoint. As long as DJI continues to provide that alternate feed I will favor it. So will anyone else who wants the best possible connection.

      Yes but why have it with the mavic and yet keep it away from the Spark? They wanted the hands free little selfie drone to be as it is just that and not something we can get over 3 miles with that little drone..I say they are making it obsolete for us users that we have to go back to downgrading the firmware..

    I don't think anyone ever claimed the wired connection was 'better'. But, with the cable, you never get connection issues. Remember, when you use WiFi, you have two connections (one from the Controller to the Spark and one from the Controller to your Phone). I believe a lot of people were having issues with the latter

  • @ChristopherMuntonRVA
    @ChristopherMuntonRVA 7 лет назад +1

    One issue that isn't covered here is competing signals. I live in a city and when I fly around here there are a lot of competing signals. WiFis, electrical, microwave and so on. I have found that the more dense the area with signals the more issues you can have with keeping connections while flying. So far I have found the USB connection to solve this issue. Please do a follow up video with these parameters. good job on the video.

    Hi Alex, In my situation there is a huge difference. The hack is about the connection between the RC and your phone. It does not affect the connection between the drone and the RC so, no difference in range etc. In my situation the wife connection between RC and phone is constantly disrupted. And there comes the cable.. The connection does not fall away when there is the ‘hack’ And thus a much better flying experience. I have been flying in heavily crowded wife areas. I can see from the blog that you have been flying in a more remote area. I’m sure the wife connection will be better there.
    Great vlog :-)

    It's actually faster when your on to go using the cable instead of the Wi-Fi there's actually a big difference.The video quality is much smoother using the cable is that of the Wi-Fi... I had a phantom 3-4 and a inspire one and also a mavic pro now the spark combo all experiences with my drones I know the total differences when I'm flying the spark using the cable than the Wi-Fi and using the Active track is actually better in the cable...I also try the Wi-Fi I totally see the difference...don't make me make a video and show you the difference again

    Unless I missed it, was the wifi on the phone turned off before the cable was connected? My results were totally different with my iPhone 6 and the cable. My spark was pretty much un-flyable with the delay in the FPV on the iPhone. There is a specific order that the cable must be connected for it to work correctly.

  • @PathLessPedaledTV

    I think one big advantage of the cable is that the phone battery lasts longer since it is not using wifi and bc it is being charged by the RC.

  • @robdahlgren0506
    @robdahlgren0506 6 лет назад +1

    First of all, I would expect the latency to change as the distance increases. Second of all, 100 MS is a significant delay. Not like it is likely to make you crash, but if you move the sticks to the left you will notice the delay.

    The live video lag is bad when I use it without the otg cable. With the cable, I get no lag no matter how far I get.

  • @lewismccracken6073
    @lewismccracken6073 3 года назад

    FYI the reason its best to use cable only and turn off wifi on phone is simply to reduce interference because the controller also uses the same 2.4/5.8 ghz to control the drone, the actual performance difference will vary depending on many factors but in most cases it wont make much difference, however its still a better practice. There is also a possibility that there is less lag on a cable connection, however i have not looked into that.

  • @johnrobertson7583
    @johnrobertson7583 4 года назад

    Hi. Nice test. I do have a question for you as a relates to the frequency of control. Did you try the spark in both 5.8 G and 2.4 G? I will bet if you have it in 2.4 G mode that the cable connection makes much more of a difference because then there will be no Wi-Fi Interference between the devices. You’re correct definitely if you kept the spark in 5.8.

    when you did the otg test on distance did you use the 2.4 ghz o get more range out of the spark . Because that really works for me . I get up to 500m more out of the 2.4 ghz compared with the 5.8 ghz

    All I know is that before I started using the OTG to lighting cable for my iPhone I was get a ton of drop out while flying but once I started using the cable the video dropouts stopped. So in my experience this cable made the spark usable a all ranges that I have used it.

    its more about using the cable to stop video glitches and video lag which has nothing to do with latency - lag is image mili second freeze, frame roll and interference from other wifi units.. where are you getting your facts :P

  • @jamesm568

    I find a connection between the controller and the phone to be more stable when it's hardwired and using a wire is always better than wireless. Having two wireless connections between two different devices sharing the same data and frequency band will always cause a decrease in performance. Have you ever try using Wi-Fi in a residential neighborhood and tje performance sucks so bad because there's 50 other people hogging the Wi-Fi channels making your home network perform poorly?

    My results are very different. In a field near my home, 50 meters and you cannot get good video connection. The feed from the Spark drops out and lags/freezes. With the OTG cable AND WiFi of the phone turned OFF, it can go 400 feet up and a football field away and the video feed is perfect.

    The OTG cable works and it takes your device's WiFi out of the system. That alone is enough of a reason to do it. I can connect my tablet to the controller by cable and use the WiFi in the tablet to connect to a WiFi hotspot created by my phone so I can get live maps on my tablet.
    It is just clickbait to call this a hack or to claim that you have busted it. Use the OTG cable. If you forget to take it you can still work via WiFi and it is almost as good and almost as stable.

    This is a well-designed test, and thank you for doing it. The benefit of the cable would be if you could use it to bypass the wifi connection step. But based on your video, in order to use the cable, you still need to connect to wifi first, correct? If that is the case, then the cable hack really isn't worth it, especially if there is no real latency advantage. Great video!

  • @MrCareyer
    @MrCareyer 7 лет назад +2

    Dude, 110ms difference in latency makes a huge difference when flying pure FPV. Even the better 170ms is hardly on the edge of being acceptable. e.g. at 40km/h within the latency the copter is 113m ahead of your perception, i.e. you landed in a tree already without knowing it ;-).

  • @kniefi

    cool video - but one thing which makes me wonder the appropiate selection of a flying spot would be the huge Tower in the backgrund.
    On the left side of the audience`s viewpoint.
    Wouldn`t such a big source of telecommunications waves/radiation mean possibly reduced flying distances?
    I would not feel comfortable at all, if there was such a big tower with so many - seemingly antennas - being installed on it`s sides...
    If you made sure, it is no cellular tower at all and it is using completely different frequencies, well then my point is invalid and I may be excused.

    What a silly test - to check out problems with wifi, in perfect conditions far out in the country. Was there even ONE access point or other wifi-activity present in this area ? Of course you'll get the answer you was looking for - that you CAN get a reliable wifi-connection from RC to an Iphone.. But what people has encountered in crowded network areas and with other phones - you just ignore ? Why do you call it a hack, by the way ? A steady cable connection that's integrated in the RC and app (that is highly recommended by DJI for the other drones, just not mentioned in the spark manual)

Let's not mention that Google themselves can't even make a app that runs on an Android device better than it can on an Apple device. please explain to me why developers are abandoning Android at an alarming pace? Let's not forget that Android tablets are absolutely horrific and you can't even work with editing 4K files using an Android device to this day. Let's get some other facts straight, now look at all the Android startup companies that fell under. Worldwide market shares mean nothing when you have to flood the market with cheap horrible Android devices to third world countries. Also, what is with Android devices losing over 80% of their value after a year? I see why DJI don't give a damn about Android as it shows in their Android apps.

    Dont agree. I found a huge difference in latency. wifi connection feeds always have interefence to contend with in urban areas. The direct cable an absolute must. Instead of critizing forums try looking at the statistical significance of them first. Many people cant all be incorrect. The accurate technical conclusion is that when using wifi connectivity connection strength can vary between handsets/tablets. Even for the same model. I have seen variance across different devices based on CPU capability. This is a key interface for connectivity video wise between the drone's feed being emiitted through the RC controller to your phone interfaced through dji go 4 software. Incidentally in my testing i found the connectivity this way via wifi so bad on my iphone 6s I almost sent the drone back. The direct micro usb to lightening or micro usb immediately removes that variance more importantly in conjested areas where wifi interference is more prevalent as a direct data cable is directly passing the data to the interfacing app thus removing any risk of interference which you obviously was not getting due to the open area you appeared to be in. hard wire will always give you better reliable bandwidth (cable quality dependent). Basic bandwidth law.

  • @JohnFHendry
    @JohnFHendry 7 лет назад

    It's common knowledge flying using WIFI is terrible and if you do the math or read my post where it was done you will see 100ms delay hides what you hit at speed. Even in a camera quad it matters as you can't stop the wind moving you around. DJI products are for beginners that want a camera drone so the delay is more acceptable in that sense but still too much IMPO.

      1. You can't fly in cities in almost every decent country. 2. The phone is just next to the controller, why other signal will interfere in the city? 3. The strongest signals in every country are the regular FM Radio and the UHS TV. They made the video next to the most important radio tower in the city so...

      Xavi's G. Legal in America to fly over people and in cities, don’t confused rules with laws.
      2. While I no longer own a spark, the cable makes a huge effing difference specially in WiFi congested areas. I tested this myself on many flights, you do have to disable WiFi on your phone first so doesn’t jump connection, and it’s about 1/2 the latency and range seems to be a bit better but mostly signal quality improvement.
      3. TV towers can interfere but that’s mostly down to smothering it out with power, the wavelength is such that the spark could hide in the length of the wave and not be bothered.
      Finally I own many DJI drones, including the sparks big brother the Mavic Air. I will say this, DJI’s Enhanced WiFi found in the Mavic Air (in FCC mode) beats the Lightbridge system in the Phantom 3 series drones. I tested this... and not too far off from Lightbridge on P4A but defiantly behind it on signal quality and range. and miles and miles off from Occusync 1 and 2 .

    The reason that this works is that DJI created this hard link so that you could link the Spark to the DJI Goggles. See adapter cable now for sale at DJI.
    The DJI Goggle interface is the same as the Smartphone. So that is why this works.
    The Wifi connection from the Controller to the Spark is very unreliable and not usable on an iPhone or iPad. This is country dependant so you cannot provide a definitive result testing from your country.
    This is due to issues with the 5.8Ghz wifi implementation in the controller. 5.8Ghnz Wifi is a controlled spectrum and has different access availability in different countries like FCC and CE compliance.
    You need to clear the default 5.8Ghz wifi back to 2.4Ghz on the controller if you want to use an IOS device with wifi. The Model / Controller frequency hops channels in the 5.8Ghz band to channels that are not available on that countries 5.8Ghz IOS device. So you get constant pauses in the controls.
    Cheers

    From other tests I've seen, the improvement is in the lag from the video signal and no loss or dropout from wiFi connection. The "video quality" itself shouldn't be that much different, if at all.

    Poor test, proofing nothing. :( Next time try to fly in the city and try to fly as far as possible with and without OTG cable. And try it in Europe where max flight distance is theoretically only 500m (without using another real "FCC hack").

    I get far less latency and interference when using the OTG. I’ve never considered it a hack but rather a bypass.
    Considering you didn’t fly it a great distance (I.e. 1.2 miles) this test was not credible. When distance increases between the radios, more power is required to send and receive and as a result, along with distance, greater latency. Try a true long range test and post another video using both methods again.

    I have a google pixel 2 phone connected to the Spark via wifi. I would get random wifi disconnects between the phone and the controller. With an OTG cable absolutely ZERO disconnects. Cable all the way for me.

    I gave your video a thumbs down, which I have never done before. The reason is your premise: if it doesn't affect me, it doesn't affect anyone. I am truly glad you don't have the issue (yet), but I have seen it first hand, and the cable solved it. So I guess your bust is busted.
