    Ah, it would be. Because the tourbillon has a tiny pinion on the bottom jerkily driving the movement while the carousel uses that massive wheel attached to the cage to smooth out the jitteriness, right?

    Is there any practical advantage to the Carrousel? To me it seems somewhat pointless to add another, more complex set of mechanics to the system when the existing system already achieves its purpose. Is the Carrousel more energy efficient or what?

    • @karlzhao314
      @karlzhao314 8 лет назад +3

      +JP JP I was asking as opposed to the tourbillon. I highly doubt it's more "smooth" than the tourbillon, since the carousel adds a whole new set of gears that control the carriage's rotation, so the carriage is at the mercy if any backlash and tooth inconsistency in that new gear train. And the tourbillon cancels out variation from the position of the watch as well.
      Energy efficient, that's what I'm asking about, but since you appear to be comparing it to a standard fixed-balance escapement, I'll tell you this: tourbillons and carousels are definitely NOT more energy efficient than standard escapements. You're rotating a carriage containing the escape wheel, balance wheel, the carriage itself, and (in the case of the tourbillon) the fourth wheel as opposed to just the balance wheel in a standard escapement.
      Not all mechanics are watchmakers. If I asked an auto mechanic what a tourbillon is, there isn't much of a chance he could even explain what it is, let alone differentiate between a tourbillon and a carousel, let alone explain the advantage of a carousel over a tourbillon (which is what I'm asking for.)

    • @karlzhao314
      @karlzhao314 8 лет назад

      +karlzhao314 excuse me, I meant "in the case of the carousel" in the parentheses. The tourbillon is the one with the fixed fourth wheel.

    • @karlzhao314
      @karlzhao314 8 лет назад +3

      Your reply makes no sense, but I'll try to interpret it anyways.
      1. No, it isn't. A tourbillon is defined as a rotating cage for the balance turning around a fixed fourth wheel. A carrousel is defined as a rotating cage for the balance driven by a secondary gear train.
      2. Your evidence for this is? It's counterintuitive at best, and I don't see how it could be more energy efficient.
      3. Obviously the one with fewer gears. With more gears you're losing more force to friction between teeth, in the ruby bearings, etc.
      4. Irrelevant. The only reason I brought up mechanics is to show that not all mechanics understand watches.
      5. Just because the carrousel is a newer alternative to the tourbillon does not make it inherently better. I'd like to see why it's better before I'm convinced it is.

    • @luiskp7173

      If you stop the cage on a tourbillon, the whole movement stops, on a carrousel, if the cage is stopped, the regulator and the scapement will continue running.

    alot of chinese watches nowadays (look xeric for instance) have what is here labeled "tourbillon" in them. On a side note I would like to add that the word "tourbillon" in a lot of swiss watches seems to be synonumous with what is labeled caroussel here right? I mean when I google tourbillon I always see this cage structure shown on the right.

    • @bliglum

      Most of the extra cheap Chinese "Tourbillons" are just open heart movements... There are some TRUE Chinese tourbillions, but they are a bit more, around $500 and up... Still WAY cheaper than a Swiss Tourbillion!

      The tourbillon is more impressive to see for real than the carousel. I have a £400 chinese tourbillon (Audemars Royal Oak replica) and it is mesmerising to watch, no pun intended.

    nice try but no cigar, you've cluttered up your models/simulations with the drive train which is irrelevant to the difference so its pretty much impossible to see the actual details of the escapements.

    either way, it's a balance and escapement mounted on the carrier of a planetary gear that drives the escape wheel. the distinctions are (1) whether or not the balance is concentric with the carrier, and (2) whether the gear train drives the carrier via teeth at the edge, or by the carrier's shaft, or via a ring gear acting on the planet/escapement. the distinctions are mechanically trivial, which is why people rarely distinguish between tourbillons and carousels

  • @RollaArtis

    This video makes it all seem highly complicated, but really it's quite simple. Both Tourbillon and Karussel have a rotating carriage which carries the balance. With the Tourbillon, the carriage is integral with the train, whereas the Karrusel carriage is not but is driven by it.

    It's a bit tricky for the tourbillon because the fixed 4th wheel is not truly a 4th wheel. The tourbillon cage has a central pinion, mounted halfway between the jewel for the balance and the jewel for the pallet fork. It rotates once a minute, with the cage just like a 4th wheel, and drives the purple gear. You can see it when the back of the tourbillon is shown but the pinion gear is in grey which obscures it. Help?

  • @Anonymous.User.0419
    @Anonymous.User.0419 6 лет назад +1

    Can someone explain? If the power (from the mainspring) is delivered to the cage (escapement) always at a constant angle, why does it matter if the escapement-cage rotates? The mainspring is upstream of escapement in power transduction, and there will always be a bias in the direction of mainspring's power delivery. Indeed, don't you have to rotate the mainspring to balance the claimed affects of gravity?

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 2 года назад +1

      It was a complication introduced for pocket watches mainly, held vertically in a shirt or coat pocket.... Modern wrist watch tourbillons are just for show mainly, men's jewelry, essentially.

    • @liuj88
      @liuj88 Год назад

      To the best of my understanding, the mainspring releases its tension in only one direction and isn't affected so much by gravity no matter how it is oriented.
      The hairspring, on the other hand, oscillates back and forth, and is therefore more sensitive to gravity (at least in a pocketwatch where it is mostly in a vertical position, i.e., the hairspring oscillates up and down).

    It's hard to explain but karussel is far smoother. The escapement wheel turns an intermediate cog, which turns the karussel cage smoother. Hope this helps
