I've been riding SPD pedals since '95 and recently switched to Crank Brothers Candy. They are lighter, and shed the mud better, however I can say there is a learning curve even for those used to SPD style pedals. My girlfriend and I found the first few days we had trouble disengaging, and couldn't get our feet out, until you learn the new angle to clip out. Overall I am super happy once I got used to them. For newcomers however I would still recommend SPD.
