Peter, thanks for posting. Question. The one point about Bitcoin I've never understood is the scarcity point. If I can break up a coin into unlimited fractions, how then would a limited quantity be a value point? I have other concerns but that is the biggest one. I do get it, in general, but figured if you are suggesting it to your mother you may have thought it through a bit more than I have.
There is a maximum of 21 million Bitcoin. You can not break up 1 btc into 2 btc. Just 1 lets say in 2x 0.5 btc . But the scarcity comes from the total sum of btc beeing never more than 21m. Fiat money instead can be printed by choice and politicians abuse this. Can't print btc .
@@Alex-gu7xt Still doesn't make sense. The limited number doesn't mean that only 21M people can own it. An unlimited number of people can own it and buy it with an unlimited amount. I suppose if someone wants to buy all of the available bitcoin, that could give weight to your argument, but being able to buy fractions is still a huge factor. If there is a limitation on fractions, then that might be a reason but the altcoins are still present and the same issue exists with them. They can't be used for currency because they are too volatile and they are still treated as an asset - resulting in special sometimes complicated tax treatment. I think I'll stick to gold.
@@garypick Everyone owning a fraction of Bitcoin still makes it scarce. Gold actually has the same properties. You can melt it down in as many coins you want and everyone can own gold. But that has nothing to do with it beeing a scarce, as there is a somewhat limited sum of gold on this planet that can not be printed like Fiat .
@@Alex-gu7xt Well, gold isn't exactly the "same." You can make only so many coins from a lb of gold and distribute those coins. At some point, the unit would be too small to distribute reasonably. But, you can break up bitcoin into unlimited units indefinitely. A pretty significant difference.
