Loudest rock band ever recorded. Saw them in '75 at the Waterbury, CT Palace Theater. They were so loud, there were noise complaints from 3 blocks away and the Waterbury cops tried to stop the show. Didn't happen. GFR were banned from returning. Seems they caused a few cracks in the building and all future bands had to sign a maximum DB sound level clause. I saw Black Sabbeth there several years later, and they were not as loud as they were when I'd seen them in the past at a different venue.

I saw them at the Capital Center in Maryland years ago, I will never forget, buildup, then bright as hell, the whole stage lit up with a gigantic American flag, and the band burst into this song!!! I was ecstatic!!!
At my high school they played music at lunch time. There was exactly ONE tape they played. I heard this song every day for 4 YEARS. Never got tired of it!
I saw them in 1971 in Heidelberg, Germany when I was in the Army. It was an outside concert, kind of a mini-Woodstock. We camped out overnight and hashish was $1 a gram back them.

These guys were total professionals. They worked their asses off during a concert. Going to a rock concert in the 1970's was heaven for us young people. I saw them in 1974 and my ticket was $6.25. We really had it good!

Todd Rundgren produced this and he said he never saw a band so well-rehearsed as GFR. They were so well prepared they were able to release this song as a single and it hit #1 while they were still recording the album

He said they never rehearsed , GFR would come into the studio and cut an album in an hour, Just sing and play it thru in 1 take, What you hear on the albums is actually them playing " Live " . Frank said it took other bands a week to record an album. He said Grand Funk is 10 feet tall.

Of all the countless concerts I have been to in my lifetime, GFR was one of the most intense and enjoyable musical experiences. Saw them in the early 70's at The Warehouse in New Orleans and never forgot it.

First heard these men live in Nacogdoches, Texas 1972(ish). They were in old Shelton gym. About 6 months later Chicago, Three Dog Night, and the Brothers Doobie had all played on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. Good tunes for a $5.00 ticket. I was 12 and still remember the pot smell being so strong you could literally smell it BLOCKS north because of the summer breeze from the south. They were excellent ...still are.

Not a musician or expert, but it seems difficult to play drums at this speed AND sing. Requires a huge amount of energy. Later, Don Henley did some songs with Eagles, but I think they were slower ballads. I'm curious to know how many/who were drummers and lead singers. We have singers and singer/guitarists, but perhaps not so many singer/drummers. Karen Carpenter made a cross over from drummer/vocalist to featured vocalist. What a lovely contralto voice!
I bought this album after it had gone gold and they had issued gold colored vinyl LPs to commemorate it. The LP label had a blurb on it that stated "To be played at maximum volume"

The clothes were designed by the famous photographer and designer Lynn Goldsmith. They were made for the Shinin’ On Tour and they glowed in the dark. I love GFR and always have. What they did to Mark Farner is beyond forgiveness. Mark wrote most of the songs and did the vocals on the majority of the songs. Mark was GFR!!

Not a musician or expert, but it seems difficult to play drums at this speed AND sing. Requires a huge amount of energy. Later, Don Henley did some songs with Eagles, but I think they were slower ballads. I'm curious to know how many/who were drummers and lead singers. We have singers and singer/guitarists, but perhaps not so many singer/drummers.
Karen Carpenter made a cross over from drummer/vocalist to featured vocalist. What a lovely contralto voice!
I bought this album after it had gone gold and they had issued gold colored vinyl LPs to commemorate it. The LP label had a blurb on it that stated "To be played at maximum volume"

The clothes were designed by the famous photographer and designer Lynn Goldsmith. They were made for the Shinin’ On Tour and they glowed in the dark. Mark Farner also played an aluminum Veleno guitar for this tour too. When the lights hit the guitar it would shine back out into the audience.

I love GFR and always have. What they did to Mark Farner is beyond forgiveness. Mark wrote most of the songs and did the vocals on the majority of the songs. Mark was GFR!!
I actually met Mark Farner at a club south of Baltimore he was playing solo not with GFR third was after they split around 1986 the club was called the Network and fortunately my buddy owed it so I could actually hang out backstage cool Dude never forget it
