I started sewing 9 years ago, and your simple skirt was one of the first things i made. It gave me the encouragement to keep learning. I ended up having to stop sewing a few years ago because of health issues. Im finally ready to get into sewing again, and this video popped up. Im so excited to have this be my first project after not sewing for so long 🤗💚
You just made a sewing tutorial of my dream skirt- one made out of linen, midi length, and with pockets! I can't wait to sew my own this summer. Your sewing videos are my favorite!
Hi Dana! I was going through my RUclips sewing watchlist alphabetically while baking cookies. And of course the cookies I make almost exclusively are from your chocolate chip cookie recipe you share on your blog in 2011. You happened to come up alphabetically, by chance, so I got a double dose of Dana-Made-It all at once. Very fun! Thanks for the tutorial! It's super cute. I am considering sewing some skirts with ribbons instead of elastics, for more versatility as my waistline changes or the elastic stretches out. I would tie them in a bow in the back. Anyway, that's my theory. I'll let you know if it actually looks cute (and if I actually get to that project!). It's been fun hanging out with you today! Big hug!
I used to watch you a few years ago when I started to sew. I even bought a baby lock machine you recommended. I. Glad you are back on RUclips but I’m. To sewing much these days. I sewed so much I burned myself out. I may start again as my daughter is going to have a baby so lots to make.
What a great tutorial I haven't sewn a skirt probably since high school but I have been sewing making bags and quilting I can't wait to try this skirt I think I can handle this LOL!your instructions are very clear thanks so much 😊
Thank you Dana, just loved this video. My first piece of clothing, pretty nice...I was so excited about the pockets. I didn't have thick elastic, so I used thin elastic and three lines, really just fine. Just when I'm going to freak out, you always say the saving thing. Like I had overlap on the waist and started to panic, but you said it's fine and it was. Thanks oodles, Alexis
Awww you are the cutest! I'm so glad you felt confident as you were sewing! Yes! There's always a make-it-work moment that you can figure out. I mean, usually :) haha. It's all going to be okay. I'm glad you pushed through! Thanks for sharing Alexis! Have fun sewing more projects! - Dana
Yay! You're back! I've missed your sewing tutorials. They're some of my favorite videos. Your videos are simple and easy to follow. You taught me how to sew skirts and tanks. 💕
Dana, what a treat - 3 of your lovely, happy videos all at once. I do like your dress, is it made from one of your patterns? It really suits you. Thank you from the United Kingdom x
Light weight quilting cotton or a cotton type works also. I made mine with quilting cotton and it came out pretty nice (still learning). I enjoyed this tutorial, it was very thorough and upbeat.
15:42 I find it helpful to sew from the waist down when attaching side seams. I don’t remember where I heard it from, but it stuck with me. It was something about how if you unintentionally pull your fabric as you sew, you will warp it more toward the hem than the waist. It is easier to even up the hem than the waist.
I have some really beautiful (and expensive 😖) woolen fabric I bought last year to make a Victorian walking skirt. I never got around to making it because I was intimidated by the advanced sewing level. I think this might be a great alternative. I can have a nice shirt that's close enough to the look I was going for. I'm going to make six panels instead of two, and increase the tapered-ness of the sides so the bottom will be wider... I hope that works 🤔
New sub and sewing newbie! Wow, love this and your instructions are precise! I live in the south where we love our seersucker material. Would that fabric work well with this skirt?🩷
Me too. I was 36-28-36 at age 25, and was a perfect size 8. I was very into aerobics. 3x a week religiously. And I lifted weights. I worked hard for that figure lol I applied for a fitting model job in NYC and would have gotten it but I lived in south Jersey and it only paid $5.50 an hour (1990) 😂 It wouldn’t have worked. My daughter is 23 and is 34-28-38 (her butt is a little bigger than mine was lol) but she is a size 4. (She buys size 6 pants at Target. They fit her the best.) That’s crazy that sizes then are not the same as sizes now. I think this skirt would be an easy first project for her.
I’m about to embark on making some clothing for the first time since high school! (Graduated in 1987!!!😮) how do you choose your fabric and where do you buy it? And thank you - your videos are great and easy to follow!!!
You can leave raw seams as is (they might fray a bit, but it's manageable), or you can trim the edge of the seam with pinking shears (those zigzag scissors), or you can serge the seam with a serger (overlock machine). Hope that helps! - Dana
This skirt will be a great 1st project for my daughter. She has not seen yet but wants to. Finding time (and space) is the issue. She is good at art (much better than me, I’m a multi-crafter). She is working while in college. She got her AAS in veterinary nursing to pay for the rest of her schooling. This is her last semester!! She will have a BS in biology, minors in chem and premed. She’s got straight As so far. She’s headed to vet school next September. She loves animals and funky clothes so she will be making some wild skirts. (I saw some cool fabric on clearance that was blue and green tie dye with white outlined dinosaurs stamped on (kinda like if you bleached the dinosaur stamp and pressed it on the fabric). She would look so cute in a calf length skirt in that fabric!
Leaving your selvage on in any project, you risk it not laying properly once washed. All selvages shrink differently than the main fabric because the wrap and weave are sewn at the factory much tighter. This causes more shrinkage then the rest of the fabric. Batiks you might get away with this because the selvage is less tight. Hope this helps... Thanks for the inspiration to get back to sewing clothes again.
I tried this, but it didn't work. I think i was missing the seam allowance for my waist measurement after i took away for the slanted edge. It was back to my true waist.
So happy you're doing videos again Dana. Thank you. I love your videos.
I love the way you teach ,clear concise and your personality makes it fun! Please keep making videos.
Aww thanks so much Pamela! :) Have fun sewing! - Dana

Love a skirt with buttons all the way down the front. My lifestyle is more pants or jeans these days but I love dresses and skirts!
It was difficult for me about the waist n elastic part process before seeing this video.. You made it easierrrr.. Thank youuuu🥰🥰
I plan on saving the kids clothes I made even after they outgrow them. The next generation should enjoy them...keep those memories ❤

Very pretty. And a great idea to double pin with colorful fabric especially
You made my mother's day! Enjoyed your new video! They always inspire me to sew but I don't have the time anymore😅. Thank you!
I love easy and simple sewing! I love easy instructions! Thank you so much! 🩷💛🤍💙

You are so pleasant to watch 😊 I made one of these for myself, now working on an outfit for my 5 y.o. Thanks for this video, new subscriber here.
aww thanks! And yay! I'm so happy you made a skirt! Have fun with all your sewing projects :) - Dana

First video I've seen of you and GIRL... I'm in love! Look at you radiating so brightly sharing your gifts. Can't WAIT to make this cutie!!
I am so glad I came across your video, you made this so clear and straight forward. I tend to not stay long in one video and I viewed it through!

Love it! Thank you ❤❤
Going to make these for my granddaughters!!
Dana! Seeing you made my day today! ❤
Welcome back! I have missed your videos!
Thank you Dana! I love your videos and think you are so fun 😊
I have wanted to make one of these. Thank you.
10 thumbs up! That was super simple 👍

Great video. Where can I I get instructions?
Once upon a time my waist was 28. Not so much anymore. 😂
I feel ya! 😅
My waist has disappeared! 🙄
Me either.
What is a waist?

Super cute!
Love me some Dana!!!
Dana I missed you!!
Inspiring!
How do you clean that fabric?
Thank you 👍👏🥰🌸🇦🇺
We used to make these exact 1m skirts in the mid 1980’s
What if I just wanted to do the elastic on the back of the skirt? I can’t figure out how to do that
I love this skirt 😍 Can you please do the measurements in cm also? It would mean so much to me 🙏😍
So if we haven't made a skirt before, we shouldn't start with this? I made the simple skirt once before but it's been years.

Wonderful BUT the fabric 's choice.... well, to me! : )
❤️❤️❤️

The written instruction could of been a little clearer
