How to make a Circle Skirt - for any age + any size

- CIRCLE SKIRT MATH
Radius for your Waist circle =
(Waist measurement + 2 inches) ÷ 6.28
OR
Hip measurement ÷ 6.28
Using the waist measurement will give you a snug, and less gathered look. And though hips are wider than the waist, the added 2 inches (plus the fact that the waist is cut on a curve, which creates a little extra give in the fabric) makes it possible to get the skirt on around the hips. However, if there is a significant contrast between the hip and waist measurements, go with the hip measurement to create your pattern. The skirt will simply have more gathers in the fabric.
CIRCLE SKIRTS!
Circle skirts are fun to wear no matter what age you are! They twirl, they look adorable, and they're easy to make! We'll do some simple math to create our pattern and then sew it together with a simple elastic waistband. These skirts are great for everyday wear, holidays, and they're PERFECT for costumes.

I made my first skirt by myself when I was 10 with this video. Now I'm 17 and I'm getting paid to make clothes for people. This is so beginner friendly and taught me a lot!
That’s so great! Love hearing that! Way to go Katelyn 👏👏🥰🙌
I am 11 and made a long skirt for myself! IT IS AMAZING, THANK YOU! I am blessed with a sewing machine.
Dude! I'm 11 and made one as well!! I ended up sewing it to a bodice and making a dress though.
Oh, that is great! Congratulations! I learned to sew when I was 9, and my 10th birthday gift was a real sewing machine. Needless to say, I have continued sewing my whole life, and will probably do so for as long as I can.
@@sarahtracey1504I’m making one too!!!!!!! Any tips on making bodices?
im 11 too and i found a sewing machine in the cupboard i made a couple of stuff butt i kinda want to make a skirt
im a bit stuck on where to buy my fabric from especially because all the shops are shut in england
i'm 15 and want to start making my own clothes, and this tutorial is so beginner friendly and informative!! this lady has such positive mom vibes i love her
Have you tried making anything yet? ☺️
My 7 year old granddaughter got a sewing machine for Christmas from the other grandparents. In 2 hours (not counting grandmother preparations), we had a circular skirt that she loves!
❤❤❤
I love how this tutorial is broken down and so beginner-friendly! I'll definitely be watching more of your tutorials -- thanks!
I have always wanted to make clothes for my kids but other tutorials “for beginners” talk like I have been sewing for years. I can’t wait to try this out! I have leopard print cotton that I’m now considering not sleeping tonight for haha
How did your sewing projects turn out? Did you come up against any challenges?
This is by far the BEST online tutorials I have found. The pace of tutorials is not too fast, not too slow.....it's so easy to follow. Thank you for this.
This is such a great and clear video! I love how thoroughly you explain the measurements and how to fold the fabric! Most videos hardly pay attention to that part!
I hate math, but love sewing; thanks for making it easier to understand without getting aggravated and throwing my ruler across the room! Love your videos!
As a beginner "sewer", I appreciated the step by step instructions. I followed along and before you knew it I had created two skirts for my daughters. . .the single layer and a double layer. By the time I made my third skirt, I didn't even need the tutorial anymore. Thanks so much for making this so easy.
Fun fact: your tutorial on your blog for circle skirts was one of the first things I ever pinned on Pinterest and was what I used for the first skirt I ever made. I really like how you do the zig zag stitch "inside out" and I'll have to remember that trick the next time I make one. Thank you!
I made my first ever article of clothing with the help of your video! That has been my goal since I started sewing! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us!
Oooo knee socks would look so cute with this! Must try
Thank you for these instructions! I made a double layer circle running skirt made out of sparkly specialty fabric for RunDisney. She wanted a skirt that looked like Belle (Beauty and the Beast - blue dress). I followed your directions and just added a square of fabric for the apron front to the short layer and it turned out great! Thank you again for these instructions. So simple!
an easier way to draw the circle: using a string + pencil + tack [to hold the string in place] :)
I plan on trying this🤣
Naw, thats too easy. 😆
You can use you tape measure because there’s usually a hole in it and it can help check that you have the right length
Great idea
I did that and now my circle is 🥰💫immaculate✨🧚♂️
My daughter needs a circle skirt for a costume day at school this coming Friday. She wants to be Minnie Mouse and I had zero clue how to make the skirt. I bought the fabric, a red with white polka dots, found your tutorial, and followed it to a "T"! It was PERFECT!!! I can't believe I made a skirt! Your tutorial is wonderful and so easy to understand!! Thank you!!!
Oh good! That makes me so happy to hear!! :) Dana
This tutorial was so straightforward and easy to follow! Thank you very much for such a charming and educational video.
I love your tutorials. They make everything incredibly clear and easy with out berating the point. Thank you so much.
50's themed wedding coming up... using this method for a poodle skirt... Made a couple quilts but this will be my first EVER piece of clothing made from scratch... wish me luck! 🤞
I watched this video five years again and I still always come back to it when I make costumes. Awesome awesome video
❤ that is inspiring to hear. This is my first time finding this channel or video and I want to make a woolen flare skirt for myself.
The way you explain makes it so simple and easy to understand! Great tutorial!
Love the easy tutorial of the skirt! So pretty! Definitely will be watching more of your tutorials. Thanks!
This video along with your tutorial on how to hem a circle skirt helped me out so much! You are so easy to learn from and I appreciate the work you put into your videos. Thank you so much!
Oh good awesome! yay! Have fun sewing more skirts :) Dana

😍😍😍 I just inherited my mother’s sewing machine that she inherited from her mother and let me tell you, that thing has seen better days.
You have such a positive personality. It was fun watching the video.
Thank you! :)

btw I am a single dad learning to improve my sewing skills for my 3 year old daughter I am using a brother vx1100 machine and even when I do the reverse stitch back and fowards a few times it still wont lock in the stiches any ideas or help? I cant get a book for it. also when measuring the waist can I use a pair of her pants that fit her snug and add a few inches to allow for more room in the dress or would I still need to use your formula r=c÷3.14?
charles johnson No advice to offer but wanted to say that your daughter is a lucky little lady to have a dad like you. ❤
AlpineKitty thank you so very much I do my best to try and be the best daddy ever as well as be a great mother figure to her when she needs advice in those types of areas too like makeup, other littl bous church clothes you know all the things moms usually ha e to answer and offer pointers on
You are a great dad!
If you are having trouble locking the stitches, try either hand locking (use a needle and thread and sew back and fourth and then pull the needle through the loop of thread. Or if you would rather continue with a machine, use a zig zag stich with the forward and back trick at the ends only. Hope this helped. If you still need help you can email me. I'll leave my YT email here.

I'm only 14 trying to learn how to sew clothes. I'm not that good at math but I understood it so much better when you explained pie! Thanks I can actually understand now. Now I don't just have to make pillows for my mums crystals!
These videos are amazing! Great production, and the tutorials are clear and simple to follow. I'll definitely be trying out this one.
This was SUCH a helpful video! I almost gave up on my skirt until I fell upon this video. Thank you so much
Thank you! They’re having 50’s stay at the school, and I made two skirts for two of my nieces. Easy Peezy with your video.
Love this. i just finished my daughters skirt using this. i had to make a few minor changes but its still absolutely gorgeous.
You've posted an absolutely fantastic tutorial and you are so pleasant to listen to and follow along with. Thank you so much for posting this, I'm so excited to go and sew!!!
Thanks so much, Nicole! Have fun with your circle skirts! :)
Where can i get the pattern?
Oh my goodness! Thank you thank you so much for this tutorial! I was able to make an impromptu poodle skirt in easy time. I don't sew; so, I am going to use felt adhesive and Heat N Bond for the waste band! I'll send a picture of the end result! THANK YOU AGAIN! AWESOME
nice
Love that you are straight to the point and give lots of examples. This is great.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. It made it so quick and easy for me. My granddaughters love their new skirts. I, also, purchased your pattern for shorts to make a pair for my grandson. Learning to love sewing again!
I received a sewing machine from my husband for Christmas! I'm so excited that I found your channel. I think this will be really helpful for me, as I am a beginner! 😊
My husband bought me a machine when we were first married in 1987 and I just had to get a new one this year. Hope this one lasts as long.
Hi I love your tutorials. I will be making these skirts for my 3 and 5yrs old daughters.
New subscriber, all the way from the U.K
Oh, I just realized that her double-layer method would work perfectly as my lining for the skirt! I'll just cut the lining shorter than the regular fabric instead of longer. Dang, this was a great tutorial!
thank you so much, I've always battle with making a circle skirt until you outlined the correct procedure. love your tutorials
Great teaching skills. Organized, prepared, excellent communication. Great Job!
I know this is a rather old video. But i found it again and was super happy. i made some adjustments to the skirt so that i could use it as the bottom part of a dress im making. This was very helpful
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful. :)
Hi, how did you adjust it to be the bottom part of your dress, I would like to use this method but i want to add a zip to the back so it can join with a bodice?
Thank you for making this tutorial so informative and easy to follow! I just got my first sewing machine and this tutorial was the guide for my first go at it. It was a success!
Mind=blown! That whole layering the larger circle over the smaller circle, then flipping it through and out...WOW! LOVE THAT!
Just discovered this video (2018). Thanks so much, i made my very first skirt following this tutorial. In fact my very first piece of sewing ever! Really appreciate this easy to follow video. Awesome! Thanks again x
Wow that's awesome! Good job! :) Dana
@alvin yakatori I discuss finding fabric wide enough for adults in the video...basically you need to find 60 inch wide fabric...OR, cut two semi-circles from 44 inch wide fabric and sew them together to make one large circle.
+MADE Everyday Love the video. I need to make a plus size circle skirt for a plus size 45 inch waist. When you say two semi-circles -- I guess you mean HALF circles? So divide the measurements I need (with seam allowances) in two and cut two, and them seam them together? Sounds right, but I am afraid to cut without verification. Thank you.
+MADE Everyday Where do you buy your fabrics?
+Olivia D she probably gets them at michels or joan's fabric store that's were I get my fabric.
+Jill Parker For making two half circles - use the same math method, but instead of folding your fabric into quarters, i think you would just fold it in half - so that only one of your edges is on a fold, instead of both? That's what i've done for mine anyway, and it worked fine.
+eloise brooke thank you!! I actually went ahead and made it using the other method but I plan on making more!
I haven't made anything yet but she is my absolute fav person to watch! She gives me total detail without a bunch of nonsense and she's very calm and soothing to watch!!! Will recommend 100% thank you!
Such fast and fabulous instructions for the circle skirt. Will make for my little granddaughters when they come out to visit in January! Your presentation energy adds to the excitement of sewing.
You made this look easy enough to try. Unfortunately, I used a knit so my circle is......well.... it may end up being a tutu for a hippo.
I need this sewing machine in my life
Same I don't have a sewing machine so I have to hand stitch EVERY LITTLE THING!
I hand stitch alot its relaxing to me I'll put on a movie and just go i have a sewing machine also

Lol you’re not the only one! I’m almost done mine but it looks AWFUL! 😣 😢 LOL
I am a learner but what i see on your Made Everyday is great. This is an easy way to improve one's sewing skills.
Thank you for this :) I followed this video this afternoon and made my own circle skirt, took maybe 5 hours to do, used a lilac cotton jersey fabric and a darker lilac elastic for the waistband, I managed to make one whole circle so that was good, I struggled a bit with the elastic waistband and broke 2 needles but got there in the end, it hangs really nicely, sits maybe 4 inches below the knee at 24 inches (for my 5ft 3" height) and twirls nicely, letting it hang over night and tomorrow going to hem it. Not bad for a first time and a bank holiday afternoon well spent.
These skirts are awesome ! I used to have some when I was a little girl. Time to sew one for me ! Thanks for sharing it with us x
+stelios joanne Thanks so much! - Dana
I love it! Very well explained!!! Thank you so much!!!
I found this video a few years back and I keep coming back to it anytime I need to update myself or nieces circle skirts!!! I absolutely love this! Thank you so much!!
Awesome! Love it! Thanks Kaylie :) - Dana
Thank you so very much. This tutorial is straightforward and easy to follow. My daughter and I have begun sewing together. It has been a great way for us to bond.
lol when I have to iron the edges for a hem I like to use my hair flat iron. Anyone else use their flat iron?
Q
do we have to make the hem cuz it seems kinda hard sorry if im wrong or something but im 12 and really want to learn how to make clothes but this will hep me alot thankyou
Cat Lover yes you have to sew a hem to keep the fabric from fraying and to hide the cut edges.

ok thanks
Christal Martineau I'd never even thought of that!! That's genius!
I love your videos! I have watched tons of your videos and they have helped me so much. The zipper one helped me conquer my fear of zippers and was incredibly detailed.
This is by far the simplest way to sew a circle skirt :) Thank youuu loads xx

by the way I have a brother jx2517 sewing machine😊
look online for a chart
but look for the typical waist measurement for a size 16, and then follow her formula...
+Katherine Sillaman thanks I looked just now and found it! much appreciated😊✌😆
Yayyy! Lol i make clothing for babies and toddlers, my daughter is a size 18 month, so im constantly looking up size charts to make clothing for other sizes xD
Thanks for your tutorial! I made a really cute skirt for my daughter to match her birthday party theme. The one change I made was sewing in the waistband with the right side facing up so I could ensure I was sewing straight. 😊 I learned this by doing a test skirt first and that stitching came out way wonky. 😁 I also used twice as many pins on the waist to keep it in place as I sewed. But this was my first time doing an exposed elastic waist like this and your step by step was great. Thank you again for the tutorial!
Absolutely terrific tutorial for beginners, the pace and thoroughness was very helpful, loved the video and it's style
the circle skirt is really simple and wonderful,Easy way,but confused with the measurements .I think a bit of practice is needed.

I have been making clothes for years and absolutely benefited from this tutorial! The measurements in the beginning and the instructions on the double-layer skirt are perfect.
Awesome! Thanks! I'm glad that helped! - Dana
how do I measure out how many yards I will need a fabric? What's the math on that?
@Lee Roberts imagine it is a square when ordering fabric, a skirt that has an internal radius of 3.5 inches plus 13 inches would then need to be multiplied by 2 to get the width of the square, so you in need fabric that is at least 33 inches by 33. (radius + radius) x 2 = the side of the square.
Very clearly. Very easy. Great video Dana! Thank you!

This was a great tutorial. Thank you. I can't imagine why anyone would give it a thumbs down. Ready to make poodle skirts for neighbors Granddaughters.
If I don't own a sewing machine, can I just hand sew the skirt? Or should I try to get a sewing machine?
Pretty much anything that can be sewn by machine can be sewn by hand - it just takes much more time. :)
MADE Everyday that's right. remember all our elders happily did Everything by hand first for many many centuries. And a machine was made so many years, hand made specialties, basic daily created for selling items, fix me up then hand me down, so many travels, bartered/traded items n countries later. And let's not forget all the Mama n Grandma make me clothes, mother daughter sets, the girl w/her doll clothes sets even a few father n son sets. More importantly the quilts, blankets that was sold by the few who could do them good or the ones made for each family member fot warmth. But the most important of any is a family tree history blankets/quilt that the women of the family from the eldest Grandmother to every abled Aunt down to the youngest allowed young lady
Old enough where they can take direction and has proper sewing ability or a young new family of their own to add to apart to yhe history blamket/quilt.
I'm in the process of creating on but my health is awful right now
gonna make one for my 1st Grchild this year! go me!!!

Try and get a sewing machine you can get one at Target for 80 bucks!
lol this is cheesy but was suppper helpful and elementary to understand 👍
That is the best tutorial ever. I LOVE circle skirts, but always shied away from them because of the math! I think I will make this my first project, but include a couple of extra inches so I can include a band, seam, and zipper in the back
A great tutorial, thanks! I've been sewing for a little while, but I'm still not great at it and this tutorial was clear and easy to follow. All told I had a skirt done up in maybe two hours.
