- Buildwas Abbey, located near the River Severn in Shropshire, England, is a significant historical site with origins dating back to the 12th century. Founded in 1135 by Roger de Clinton, the Bishop of Coventry, the abbey was established as a Cistercian monastery, reflecting the order's ideals of simplicity, self-sufficiency, and a return to the strict observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict.
The abbey's architecture is noted for its austere yet elegant design, characteristic of Cistercian structures. The church, with its Romanesque nave and early Gothic elements, is remarkably well-preserved. Key features include the chapter house, with its intricate stone carvings, and the monks' dormitory, which provides insight into the daily lives of the monastic community.
Buildwas Abbey flourished for several centuries, becoming a center of religious life and agricultural production in the region. However, it was dissolved in 1536 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, leading to its gradual decline.

Stunning Abbey with riveting story here...the tiles on the floor in the chapel and the raised ceiling was just gorgeous. Loved the greenery and beautiful landscape. This was great pop duo,, the chapel house was extremly impressive,, as was the story of the ghost still there. loved the drone shots especially the pull back at the very end,, its videos like this that bring a place to life.

I remember this Abbey well from when I was walking that section of the Severn Way (I have just finished it - finally!!).
It is a really great location with a wonderful, but somewhat gory, history.
