    Hi Alessa & Brett! What a fascinating castle - such a unique design and very attractive. You really brought the castle to life with your interesting and well-researched narration. Beautiful views from the ramparts of inside the castle walls and the outside of the castle and beyond. The drone footage was spectacular. It showed the circular design perfectly. Oustanding video guys! Thank you! ❤❤

    This castle design is actually very common, but rare to see examples so well preserves. Here in Wales, our own Cardiff Castle is exactly the same.
    Before they used stone to build castles, they would build the same design of castle using wood walls or palisades in a circular structure at the top of a hill, and they often would have another encircling or walls at the bottom of the hill too or in this instance, they used a draw bridge.
    I think the thing that makes this castle unusual, isn't because its circle, but because of the way that its built like a hill fort - which was normal, and then they weirdly have level ground which is in line with the top of the hill with this draw bridge. This could be an example of the castle being added to in a later period because usually the hill fort would be solitary, the purpose of it being on a hill and surrounded by a moat is that its really difficult to attack, so the fact that you have a drawbridge to level ground from this clear hill fort design is what in my opinion is making it quite unusual
    Looking at it again, it does look like the ground was placed their artificially to have that ramp/bridge exist. Its original design would definitely have just been steps leading up to the gate so im betting it was added to by a later occupant of the castle

    • @PinnedonPlaces
      @PinnedonPlaces  4 месяца назад +1

      A absolutely fantastic read, thank you Nick for further educating me/us! We have yet to experience Cardiff, but it's on the never ending list. You could indeed be right about the later occupant of the castle adding to it's fortifications at a later stage as the castle went through various families who wanted to advance it to their liking. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a comment, it's so fun to read! :D

    its not that unusual we have a much better example of a round castle thats never fell into ruin and still has all its rooms and fires places roofs etc. look up Tamworth Castle. Im guessing thats how this castlie would of looked if it hadnt of fallen in to disrepair and its of the same time period. It may still be lived in. Id even go as far as saying that they look like sister castles but one survived one didnt
