    Thanks Dustin for spending the time and effort to give us your very experienced and balanced reviews.
    I have this lens and it deserves all the accolades heaped upon it, it is really special.
    I particularly enjoy your relaxed and informative delivery in this video, you seem confident and assured; perhaps
    because of the extra time spent with this lens!
    All the best

    I just picked this up for $340!!!! it was 375 but the guy said it was clean, and there's a tiny spot on an edge that doesn't appear in images, so he knocked off a little, i should probably have asked him for more of a reduction since a lens imperfection should prob knock off more than 10%, but I'm just so thrilled at the deal, came w the box and hood and everything, and most importantly it's an absolutely stunning lens, and one i love using to force myself to focus manually, since i'm still learning.
    i know this is ancient but thanks so much Dustin, once I became serious about lenses I discovered you're the best. obv the most thorough, but it's much more than that, always such inimitable presentation, i just really appreciate the work you do, and rarely express it. On that note I plan on joining your Patreon when June rolls around.
    take care

    Happily this is no longer a Sony-only lens. I've moved from Canon to Sony to Nikon over the past 7 years. Now that Voigtlander and others are releasing Nikon Z-mount versions of their lenses, I'm finding your reviews extremely useful once again!

    Thank you for your excellent series of reviews of this legendary optic! I agree that this lens is indeed special and ranks as the single best lens I have used on the Sony A7 platform, and is one of the best lenses I have ever had the joy to use on any camera. Zero buyer's remorse from me, though now I am eagerly waiting for the release of the APO-Lanthar 100mm F2.5 from Voightlander!

  • @DigitalGrease
    @DigitalGrease 6 лет назад +2

    Just received the 65 APO-Lanthar. The rendering is special even on the camera displays. I have the Voigtlander Nokton 50 1.5, and while it is a very sharp lens that renders very nicely, it is not at the level of the APO-Lanthar. The purity and cleanliness of the colors yield a very "delicious" rendering and a kind of "sparkle" to chrome or crystal highlights. The build quality is exceptional and, oddly enough, the heavy lens balances beautifully with the A7R3. Needless to say, I have put down a deposit for the 110 mm APO-Lanthar.
    There is just one little problem with this lens. All of my other lenses pale in comparison. It is not that they are bad, just that they are not APO. Now, if only there were some auto-focus lenses that performed like this. From your review, it looks like the Sony-Zeiss 50 1.4 gets close, although it is not a full APO design.
    Thanks for another wonderful review series.

      I too am very intrigued by the thought of the 110mm. This is a special lens, for sure, and it does kind of put other lenses to shame. I have a very good kit, but this lens is still a standout.

    Thank you Dustin for the 3 reviews on the 65mm f2 APO lens. I really wanted an APO lens. And could not decide between the 65 or 50 from Voigtlander. I'm pretty certain your final thoughts on the 65mm f2 APO clinched it for me. 50mm lenses aren't my favourite, even though it is more compact for travel compared to the 65mm. But I am willing to sacrifice the extra size and weight convvenience for the extra focal length and characteristics of this lens. I have watched quite a few of your lens reviews, and it is very rare to see you give so much praise to a single lens in this case the 65mm f2. Brilliant reviews as usual. Thank You

    I had this beautiful lens, there was nothing to complain about it, performance, handling, build quality, the smoothness of the focus,, everything perfect, except one thing, it's heavy and was often left home, it got replaced by a Zeiss 50mm f2 Loxia

      The 40mm is also my top #1 favourite lens ever (and I've gone through tons of different manual lenses). Sure it's not optically as perfect as the 65mm but the output visually is pretty stunning and the size/handling is just perfect. I had the leica mount version since I initially used it on Fuji, but I switched to Sony pretty soon. On both platforms it was my favourite lens. Just sold my copy so I could buy the FE version. Missing it already.

    Thanks for the well put together review as always. This is a keeper for me along with the Loxia 21mm for the Sony system. Whenever I have thoughts of selling this lens to fund another, I look at my images and this review and it all goes away. The biggest strengths of the lens, for me, is the color, micro-contrast and clarity. Comparing it to my previous Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f2 which was sharp but somewhat 'dark'. Compared to the Milvus 50mm f2, the images of this lens are more 'transparent' or 'clear'. Though neither of those previous lenses are a slouch by any means.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад +1

      That's a sound observation. I'm very interested in testing the Loxia 21mm - the idea of having a compact yet very sharp 21mm is very intriguing.

    • @belgiboing
      @belgiboing 6 лет назад +1

      Dustin Abbott The Loxia 21mm needs to be experienced to be appreciated. When I bought it, I already had the Batis 25mm; of which, I already liked the images and the convenience of the autofocus. But that 21mm is just so good for me that I keep both for their specific uses. The folks at phillipreeve.net have intensive experience with it, and whose opinions I value & enjoy as much as yours.

    Another great review, Dustin. A shame this lens isn't made for my Nikon D850 (yet!). I think your comment about the colour rendition of Voigtlander lenses is absolutely accurate - my Voigtlander 58mm Nokton delivers stunning colours and microcontrast. As you say, it's hard to define what particular aspects of colour create this unique effect (like some Zeiss lenses), but you know the image quality is just different and attention-grabbing. Many thanks.

    Hi Dustin, it might be a bit confusing, but apo lenses might not be free of CA. As far as I was told (from Zeiss) there seems to be a treshhold were you can call a lens apo. I asked them a while ago because I noticed some CA on the 55apo and 135apo. That was some smartass comment :-D
    Always love to watch your content! I look forward to every new video and I like the way in how you see value in lenses that aren’t papertigers!
    Best

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Essentially the difference is that an apochromatic design is able to correct on three channels rather than two. So no, while it doesn't mean absolutely no CA, it does mean no meaningful CA.

    Great review Dustin, as always - thank's a lot for it! Competent, fair-minded, precise, and being the result of extensive personal experience.Now I find myself in a double-windmill: I already owe the FE 55/1.8 and the FE 90/2.8 Macro - so do I really need this Voigtländer Juwel too? It could replace both on some excursions, representing a kind of hybrid between them!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад +1

      That's a tough call, as you don't really need it as a focal length. It's an amazing lens, but I'm not sure that it is necessary in your case.

    • @markusbolliger1527
      @markusbolliger1527 6 лет назад +1

      I can't say that I really NEED it - but it could replace the 55/1.8 and 90/2.8 Macro on some occasions (as a general purpose-lens mit macro-capabilities) - and deliver images of a distinct quality, resp. look-and-feel, with that special three-dimensional contrasty and vivid-color pop which is a characteristic of apo-lenses (?), at least this is my hope ...

    Loved your writing and videos on the lens. I shoot video mainly and my only experience with Voigtlander was the 17.5mm for MFT (GH5) and I liked it. I'm looking for a specialty lens to complement my run n gun stuff (on Sony now). The 65mm f/2 APO is in the pole position, and I kinda like the 70mm range! Could you point me to some of your video examples you mention? I can't find a lot of video work from this lens. I do think this is a great food focal length. Particularly when paired with a camera like the a7R3, which gives you IBIS (helpful for those handheld shots!) and also deep cropping ability.

    Since your review, Voigtlander 110mm f/2.5 macro APO-lanthar has been released and also Zeiss Batis 135mm f/2.8. Any chance you could review them? Batis 135mm is also APO design. I’d like to know if Voigtlander 110mm is a better pick than 65mm. 110mm is of 1:1 ratio. And how Batis 135mm is compared with Milvus 135mm. Thanks a lot.

    Looks like a great lens for manual shooters! Is it possible to leave the hood permanently attached, fixing the lens cap to the hood threads? In my Iceland trips the hood was really important, as it allowed me to shoot at almost any angle to the rain (actually a water mist), except facing the wind directly. In my first trip with hood left at home (on EF24-70/2.8L I it was too huge) many pictures were ruined by water dips on filter. I could safely shoot only downwinds. Sadly the 65/2 lens is not suitable for such adventures.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад

      Yes you can, as the front of the hood is threaded to take filters.

    I am very tempted to buy the Voigtländer Macro Apo-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, I know it is very good for macro and medium distance, but how good is it at infinity for landscape with 61 megapixels sensor ? At the moment I use my analog manual Leitz (Leica) Macro-Elamrit R 60mm 2.8 which is very good, set the aperture at 4.0 for macro and medium distance and you get lovely results, for landscape set the aperture at 5.6 og 8.0 and you get good results, a little gem of a workhorse that never dies, do you know this lens !?

    My used Voigtlander 65mm: While turning the focusing ring the magnification delays at times and I have to turn more for the magnification to occur. Because the lens were bought used (2 weeks ago) I am not sure if that is normal. Also the focusing ring turns a bit beyond the infinity mark.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 года назад

      It's hard to say. It sounds like it is functioning as per normal. As for infinity - there's typically a little extra there for thermal expansion. They are making sure the lens can focus all the way to infinity it varying weather conditions.

      So they'll be close but not exact since the sensors will be different. But why not just use the A7R3 since you have the MC-11? That way you would get an exact comparison.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад

      My point is that I've already shot a comparison, and it wasn't to the Voigtlander, not that I couldn't do such a comparison. If I get in an E mount version of the lens (which I would like to), I'll compare to the Voigtlander then.

    • @mikeearussi
      @mikeearussi 6 лет назад

      You're worried about the MC-11 not being perfectly aligned in the corners? Actually, that would make an interesting test as well, comparing a Canon A lens with the MC-11 vs the same lens designed specifically for the Sony.

    Hi Dustin. I've watched many reviews on cameras and their associated gear and I find your reviews the most well thought out and comprehensive. They almost have a calming effect, which is no small thing in light of what is going on in the world currently...or maybe I'm just old😊. I'd like to support your work so I signed up on your patreon.
    One thing I'd like to ask is a statement you made in your review of this lens (which I will be ordering shortly) is that you said that the A7riii was the best camera for manual focus lenses. I am assuming that is because of the EVF? I currently shoot with an a7iii. Do you think the A7iii can also work with manual focus lenses or is a shift to the a7riii necessary at this point? I'm only now relearning how to shoot on manual focus again after stopping many, many years ago. Thank you again for your work.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 года назад +1

      first of all, thanks for the support. I appreciate it very much! Many of the reasons why I say the a7RIII are a great platform for manual focus are also true on your a7III. The only real difference (besides resolution) that I would point to is that the a7III does have a lower resolution viewfinder, which is perhaps a little more of a negative with manual focus as a lot of the process is visual confirmation of focus. The lens will work just fine on your camera, however, and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

    Sir, from what I understand, the 110mm is out. Perchance you might review it soon?
    In a few months I am bound to acquire new glass, and I am trying to decide between the Planar 50, this macro, or the 110mm. Where I'm located, I cannot rent them to see for myself. I often shoot dimly lit events and a capable autofocus wide aperture lens like the Planar may come in handy, but I seem to be drawn in by the images of the Voigtlander. As it is, I often use a manual Yashica ML 50mm f/1.4 on my a7III for these events and I still manage, though at 1.4 and the subject at a distance beyond 3m the haze is ridiculous.
    Do you have a preference between the Planar 50 and this Apo Lanthar?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      I own both of those lenses, and I use more complimentary than competing. I guess it comes down to how much you need the macro performance of the Voigtländer. As for the 110 - I will review it at some point, but I'm seriously backlogged at the moment because of how much gear was released late in 2018.
