- Sam Harris has been criticizing Christianity and Islam for decades, and he has often made significant factual blunders. Is there an underlying methodology that leads to Sam's mistakes? Fortunately, Sam settled the matter in his interview on Triggernometry! David Wood discusses the issue.

This is why you don't trust people with a purely utilitarian ethic, because when sufficient cause is enough to justify any means. Any means will always have sufficient cause.
Clearly Sam thinks one is worse than the other.
Peter Singer has entered the chat

Sam "I Don't Believe in Censorship, Unless It's Censorship I Believe in" Harris.
…criminally horrible intentional misinformation
Exactly!! Sam Harris’s “WELL BEING” philosophy in nothing more substantive than his own arbitrary subjective metaphysics dressed up with scientism, utilitarianism and materialism of the gaps fallacies.
Utilitarianism and scientism and materialism of the gaps clearly leads to all sorts of absurd and evil conclusions which is why it’s very popular among people who subscribe to the assumption that we are all nothing more substantive than ULTIMATELY MEANINGLESS, HOLLOW AND SOULLESS APES, determined machines, that is nothing more substantive than chemical and biological robots right? Sam is an unapologetic determinist who an actually believes that freewill/the conscious agent is ILLUSORY, that is rational decision making itself is “ILLUSORY” right?
We are clearly not just determined machines. The irony is that Sam Harris makes a six figure sum trying to get people to change their WILL whilst arguing until he’s blue in the face that freewill/the conscious agent is “ILLUSORY” and doesn’t actually exist right? This is comedy gold!!
Furthermore, the controversial philosopher and utilitarian Peter Singer argues that if it is moral and “logical” to abort a baby in the uterus then it “logically” follows that parents should have the “special right” to kill their child even after birth!! Which is clearly murder. But according to the utilitarian Peter Singer if no parent has a preference that the child should live, infanticide within the first months of life can be “morally” justified!!!?
Here Singer takes Sam Harris’s logic and the same utilitarian arguments and pathway that people use to justify abortion in the womb and introduces his horrific dystopian “ethic” of “replaceability”. What a surprise!!
Most normal people naturally recoil in disgust from Peter Singers “special right”, that is Singers horrific dystopian “moral” philosophy, as do I. This guy is basically arguing that you should be able to keep killing babies in the cot until you feel that your personal subjective “special child” has satisfied your subjective preferences and preferred timing!! This is so objectively evil and depraved that it is incredible that anyone could try and justify having an abortion in a scientific and so called “rational” and civilised era!!
It shows the most when one mentions a specific U.S.President in his presence
Harris needs people to pray for him

OK. That is the message, right?

Once they have this view point(which typically is just a creation of their feelings and how they want to imagine themselves in the world) comes the concept of "Truthiness". Welcome to modern America. Thanks, Militant Athiests.
You should get your money back.
Situational ethics in Christianity does not justify deceiving or lying (hiding Jews in basement from Nazis is not lying since they are not entitled to that information, thus you are not obligated to give it to them, no more than if a weirdo just comes up and asks you at knifepoint where he can hook up with your daughter and you tell him what he wants to hear to get away from him but not the truth).
It simply states that the circunstance can determine which bad action is the lesser one (like David eating consecrated bread when in hiding from Saul, or breaking the Sabbath to get your goat out of a well, as Jesus said "Sabbath was made for men, not men for Sabbath"). 7:22
All ethics are intrinsically situational. "Ethics" are the morally bankrupt man's 10 commandments.
What's wrong with situational ethics/morals?
@@tornay131 Sam Harris version is basically "the end justifies the means".

Sam Harris is a shining example of how easy it is to overestimate self proclaimed intellectuals. That he could so carelessly treat a source, just reveals the disregard he has for it. He obviously isn’t qualified to take the lead in the conversation.
I think the same often of Jordan Peterson. He is such a lot of things that are useful but nearly any time he discusses scripture be misconstrued as what is said or reverses around elements. Poor example recently I heard something where he was talking about Moses and the burning bush and he discussed the order of Moses hearing the voice seeing the fire and realizing it was on holy ground and he pretty much reversed it. And it wasn't just a casual reversal it was to make a point about our realization causing us to see Holiness as opposed to God's command changing our perception. He never let scripture say what it says he always has to abstract it until he can make it say what he would say.
It's like what the Bible says about those who profess to be wise turned out to be fools!
Just because others have a low regard for something doesn't mean that we all should.
And likewise, no matter how highly some people regard something ... we all should?
A person can be expert in one field and a bit of an absolute dunce in others. So?
So respect him for his qualifications and for some of his qualities, disrespect him where you don't think him worthy of respect-

Also, Merry Christmas.
I knew when Harris was "quoting" Luke something was amiss. Not just because I'd never heard anyone attribute those words to Christ but because of Harris's "delivery." He actually stuttered when he started the quote. I could hear in this voice, he knew what he was about to say was not true, but he was going to say it anyway. And you are completely right. To these people the ends justify the means, as long as it's for THEIR ends.
Keep in mind, without God, the sinner has no obligation to ever be truthful, that is part of Psalms and is constantly mentioned later on into the New Testament. There is nothing reliable in what they say.
"I destroyed democracy to save democracy" ~ Harris, in some parallel universe not too far from our own.
"It's not about left or right wing." Of course not... it's about the Uniparty/Government Bureaucracy maintaining power.

Because a threat to what they call "our democracy" is actually a threat to the uni party / Federal bureaucracy / political parties.
This explains a lot, I've had atheists say some random things when accusing God. The few times I've asked them for their reasoning, they'll sometimes take some random poetic verse and apply it literally. I've even had an atheist immediately change positions and say that even if God didn't say it, the fact that something cruel is in the Bible means that it's wrong... like something terrible happened historically or in a parable = God bad. So if God didn't exist, and because bad things happened by the humans species, I guess Sam would have to argue that humans=bad and something would have to be done about it. These people are so lovely...
It's no wonder atheists keep making the same accusations no matter how many times or how many people answer them

This claim that I can't be bothered to differentiate between which denominations believe what while making blanket statements about religion dumbing people down does not fall under "intellectual honesty." Sam would not tolerate the same blanketing if he held some nuanced position that the other new atheists denied. And I happen to agree with you that the multiplicity of denominations is a problem. It's largely because we have been told, by people like Sam, that the old dogmatic consolidation mechanisms are tyrannical and oppressive to progress in thought. I got really hardcore into Sam Harris and the other new atheists a few years ago. I still think they make some pretty good points, but I wish that back then I had found people making these arguments against him. There are a number of ways he has revealed himself to be a slimy authoritarian, even without your argument here, but this just makes it undeniable.
Just beware of the cult of reason. The French Revolution shows how dark this mindset can get without God's law. We are mind, body, and spirit, none of which should be neglected.
If you know his content well, then you can be the one to show and share those numerous authoritarian moments!
I saw some of him a while ago and his personality gave it away for me. You can tell he has himself on a pedestal.
You need God, you need someone to trust in, to give up the last thing you think is helping you survive, or get you what you would like in life. You need to be able to trust someone more than human, who sees all, is just, and sacrificial towards you even to giving his only son to die for you. So that you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that your sacrifice is worth it, and is not done for nothing. We need Jesus...
He is the authoritarian, so he thinks he needs to stop everyone else from being authoritarian. It works with everything. Whatever people see as the greatest threat, is because they can be that depraved in their own soul, so they are so acutely aware of the danger of it. God showed me this about my selfishness. I was so afraid to lose anything, because I never gave, and assumed everyone else was the same way. I didn't have hope anyone would ever give to me or help me in my time of need, because I never helped anyone else. However, when I decided to trust God against everything I felt inside me, and started giving, my whole life changed, and could not be happier and more grateful for my new life. If Sam could have some faith in God. he could let go of his need to control, and literally have a more amazing life, a life like he never imagined. You can't do it it without God though,
Essentially, Sam justifies truth distortion for what he perceives to be best. Which means that living a lie and deceiving others is preferable to walking in truth. If anyone has ever had a friend or spouse that was a liar, you know the impact that has on a relationship.
How much more harm would be done to a nation if integrity was not a cornerstone of the way things are done?
What absolute hypocrisy! Trump is the lord of lies! And, not that such crucial political outcomes should be so easy to rig, but omitting certain information until just before an election is a tactical omission for personal gain. Have you seen Evangelical preachers talk about Atheists? They don't try to be honest and fair toward Atheists. Harris argues that there are scientific “neurological" grounds for supposing that his moral reasoning is logical correct and that we “ought” to be torturing people for collateral reasons. Where he gets his “ought” from is beyond most people. Are women and children exempt Mr Harris??
According to the human rights lawyer Lutz Oette….
“Torture is one of the ultimate abuses of state power, and the use of extreme violence that exploits the powerlessness of individuals subject to state control is anathema to the rule of law. It easily becomes a license to target anyone who is declared to be a threat” (Lutz Oette).
It gets worse because according to the high priest of “new atheism” Sam Harris…
“The only thing likely to ensure our survival may be a nuclear first strike of our own ” (Sam Harris).
Furthermore, according to one of the high priests of militant atheism Christopher Hitchens…
“The crucial thing is to be willing and able, if not in fact eager, to kill them without pity before they get started.” (Christopher Hitchens).
It's Sam Harris’s statement about a nuclear first strike of our own and that last phrase from Hitchens that's particularly chilling.
The irony and the absurdity goes right over their atheistic, nihilistic heads!!

His confidence and ability to articulate his thoughts has got him to where he is at today.
But God is great and the truth will always prevail.
His facade could not withstand the test of time. The fact that he’s actually an idiot is slowly but surely coming to light.
Weird. RUclips unsubbed me. Resubbed. Great work again Dr. David.
The penny dropped hard, thanks Dave.
When Sam says "our democracy" he really does mean it's their democracy, not yours if you disagree. Democracy is just a way for him and his buddies to get what they want.
If you don't vote like Sam and his friends want to, you're an existential threat to their beloved "democracy".
Totalitarianism masquerading as democracy.
kinda like what republicans say
@iampostal true...except I haven't heard top leaders among them with such permissuveness to rigging elections and doing whatever it takes to prevent the other side from winning...even abandoning ones morals for the cause.
It's quite alarming
Democracy™
@@iampostal Hahahah...except not. You'll never hear a TRUE conservative say "we need MORE government". It's just not part of the agenda.
This is actually my first time listening to Sam's horrific politics.
He’s a delusional person with sense of superiority above everyone else
The problem with Sam Harris--and other Atheists that I eventually realized--was, as pointed out, they have a vision of a beautiful future. A Star-Trek future, basically. How are we supposed to get there? By not being religious. (For those in the know, BTW, Star Trek features more than a couple phenomenon that is effectively divinity by any other name, and not even things we'd expect to happen in "ordinary reality").
How do you make the FTL drive? How do you unite humanity under one banner? How do you keep the humans happy with each other? Are aliens really out there? Do they all look like humans with funny foreheads? Would introducing solar-system wide civilizational attributes affect the cohesiveness of humanity? How would it affect social life?
"Get rid of religion" neither answers these questions...nor has any significant bearing on them. Forget "Why did we come here," these questions would still be pertinent whether the Earth is 6000 years old or not. Religion being gone doesn't magically make any obstacles to these goals any less real.
While this didn't make me a convert, it did mean that I never viewed the Atheist Future as some glorious paradise...even as an Atheist. (And don't even get me started on "Wars only happen because of religion" which flies in the face of basically any serious historical analysis of wars and why they happen).
This was absolutely spectacular David, thank you so much for taking the time to break it all down. :)
These possessed libs are self-serving trolls.
New atheist knowledge of classical philosophy and history is 0. The most annoying movement i have dealt with
Its classic sophistry presented as logic and fact
Sam is just a modern day Pharisee except his mosaic law is the "natural law". I watched that interview and my eyes popped out of my head. If that interview didnt reveal the truth of Sam to his believers then nothing will.
I don't even believe he cares about the natural law. He denies the natural law when it points to Christ. As a former agnostic, I honestly believe most non-religious follow the law of self. Whatever I want, I will do what needs to be done to get it. It is a very dangerous situation for society to be. People will betray the truth to further their own agendas. Very similar to what happened throughout the Bible.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. (Judges 21:25)
I often think whether or not the sophists back then share the same physiognomy with our modern day sophists
It's almost as though people are so afraid of the potential for one kind of fascism (in Sam's case, his earlier concerns about Christian theocracy) that they themselves become fascists for a different cause, using whatever means to bring about their desired end.
He also wrote the text book on the joy of raping. He supports known nazis because new atheism came out of nazism.
Theocracy is not fascism. Fascism is fascism. Theocracy is the future of this century. Better get your mind wrapped around it. It’s beginning all over the world.
@@Shimmer8 Anything but the religion of atheism. But, if it's a religion, it's not Christianity. We have a fellowship, which is require by God.
Can you explain what the video is about and if it actually has any good points? It's too difficult to take this guy seriously enough to watch the video, even though I'm only 1:30 into it.
@@Kanzu999he thinks that because Sam Harris misunderstood one verse in the Bible that it completely discredits him. Don't waste your time.
