I don't think I've ever seen him less coherent and articulate. The cognitive dissonance is really gumming up his synapses. I was getting exposed to MORE context, not less than those simply listening to the deliberately de-contextualized media narratives. For example, I knew back in 2016 that the whole Russia/Trump narrative was likely JUST a Clinton campaign strategy that the establishment decided to pick up and run with. It was in the wikileaks (which people like Sam would have no idea about because the media would not be going to talk about it). Right about the time that the media started running with baseless Trump/Russia stories; there was the leaked email exchange between Clinton campaign staff about trying to tie Trump to Putin. Over the next couple of years, more and more evidence came out from groups like Judicial watch (who actually sue the government and get documents) that were revealing the ties between the completely false Steele dossier, the Clintons, and the laundering of it into the DOJ through the husband of one of Fusion GPS employees. It showed the FBI at the highest levels were corrupt, that they hated Trump and wanted to fix the wrong 2016 result. That they knew the Steele dossier was full of bullshit; but they used it anyhow as the backbone for lying to the FISA court to get spy warrants for people within Trumps campaign. All of this information I knew years ago and I hope by 2022 you at least have some vague acceptance that the whole Trump/Russia collusion narrative and investigations for years and years were NOTHING but bullshit. People like Sam (and perhaps you by your condescending tone) were never exposed to any of this information because the media he was drank were in on the "get Trump" bandwagon the whole time.. evidence be damned.

I listened to every Sam Harris podcast, till his one on vaccinations, where he stated any of his peers who disagreed, challenged or critiqued the efficiency or outcomes of the new vaccine was either psychotic, schizophrenic or in some way mentally ill. That characterisation of people who disagreed with him was chilling to me. He also said on that podcast in this case he believed that other peers and professionals should be censored on media platforms if they disagreed because they pose such a danger to the population. I couldn't believe my ears after all the support he has been given to speak on sensitive issues. I discovered in that podcast the depth of his intellectual dishonesty and I didn't want to hear anything more of what he had to say.

Sam Harris is very intelligent, but if you have never read Intellectuals & Society by Thomas Sowell I highly recommend it. Some of the most disastrous events in human history have been committed by people like Harris.

Exactly. I was a big fan of Harris, especially in his "objective morality" phase. I was already colder when he went full on in the "meditation app" thing. But here, in this interview, what really made my jaw drop was when he said that anything, absolutely anything, was better than getting Trump re-elected, and that anything done to that effect was justified. I never thought I'd see Sam Harris defending a "the end justifies the means" approach, especially to politics in a democracy. I am still dumbfounded by this.

When I saw that the election was going to be between Trump and Biden, I thought 2 things: 1-That Americans felt they were stuck in a situation where they had to chose between these two was a very clear sign that democracy is dying in the US (don't take me wrong, it's the case in a lot of Western countries). The fact that movements like Unity 2020 were silenced and destroyed rapidly shows how both Reps and Dems don't care about democracy anymore. 2-But between the 2, I'd have chosen Trump. He's a moron, and certainly a misogynistic racist, but at least we knew what to expect from him : sheer stupidity. But with Biden, it was clear from the beginning he was a puppet. I don't think atheism is exempt from becoming the basis for a religion. Once things get to the point of having an all-encompassing Grand origin story (GOS Evolution), which is taken to be THE TRUTH, religiously, I think it will operate as a religion.

Nuanced thinking often requires openness, empathy, and the ability to critically analyze complex information, which can be demanding for some individuals. Because they don't think for themselves they don't learn how to see multiple facets of a situation. People hate nuance because its hard to understand. It makes things uncertain. You can't neatly organize nuanced ideas and you can't easily categorize people when their beliefs are nuanced. This gets frustrating for simple minds. That said, not everyone hates nuance. Some love the complexity and enjoy the finesse required to navigate the subtle details of people, ideas, or art. "when did things get so all or nothing?" Concurrently with the tendency to not engage in conceptual or analytical thinking, as the modern education system, the media and society in general don't encourage it, hence it's a race to the bottom with everyone becoming progressively more stupid.

I would have also asked "you talk about all this destruction and danger that Trump caused with his first term, can you give me some examples?" I’m surprised (and a little saddened) by how people can’t get beyond Sam’s Trump take. First of all, he opened by saying (and reiterated, later) that he wasn’t sure what the right call was. So he took the opposing side against the opinions of the interviewers. Did you really just want to hear agree? Do you need that validation? That being said, I think it is clear Sam probably would have suppressed the laptop story if it was his call, but even so, he’s such an excellent opponent of wokeism. I’ve been a paying subscriber of Sams for years and cancelled my subscription after this interview. So disappointing. Such an intelligent guy that has made a living pointing out how ideology poisons ones thinking and somehow he has fallen victim to the very thing he warns about. The more things I find out about Trump, and after listening to the full speech by Trump on January 6th - its quite clear to me that Sam is the only one who's been able to stay sane all along. For years I believed Sam Harris was right in The Moral Landscape in saying that we could divorce morality from religion. After seeing his rapid decline into authoritarian consequentialism, I believe he has become the personification of why his argument was flawed.

They ask how he felt about twitter’s response to the Hunter Biden laptop and he starts his answer and pretty quickly says “let’s put that to the side”…and continues to go on about something but not the laptop. You know it's gonna be a good interview when Konstantin says "that's a good answer, but that doesnt quite answer my question", at the very first question lol. I love these guys, saw them on Rogan, just loved their personality on the show. And seeing their show they're just great interviewers, it's kinda like the closest thing we have to good journalism rn, just not taking a biased approach, letting someone talk and if they slip up on their own accord that's on the interviewee not the interviewer. (Its not investigative reporting, but it's just taking an unbiased approach to literally everyone, and that's something that's been lacking alot today).
In the second half, I think it comes off quite openly that Harris can't reflect on his own statements, and how when he brings up Black Lives Matter, he's isn't critical of the religiosity of it at all. He doesn't even have the self awareness to be critical of its founder robbing millions to fund her mansions.
I am not surprised because I saw it coming years ago, in his spat with Noam Chomsky. At the time, instead of TDS, his problem was that he had an abiding religious faith in the benevolent intentions of the US military empire. He just couldn't, and wouldn't, wrap his planet-sized brain around the idea that the US military might have a wanton disregard for the human life, and that those who control the military might have less than beautiful intentions for the world.

My impression of what Sam said was if Trump as a candidate to presidency and actual president can spout conspiracies and blatant false information to gain and maintain his position, then why can’t the same be used against him. I've never been a huge Harris fan, but I've always found his quirky perspective to be a valuable addition to the IDW. This interview completely collapses any respect I have for him, however. His total lack of recognition of his own hypocrisy - and the sheer magnitude of his blind spots - are just stunning. I wont spend another minute on him.

Why is it BS? All news orgs at the time (and especially with hindsight) knew the laptop story was bunk. At a minimum, you can't trace the chain of custody and integrity of the data let alone if it came from Biden. I forget exactly, but we had like, Rudy Juliana had copies of a disk from a blind guy who made copies off of a laptop that said "hunter" on it dropped off by a guy he could not recognize and has no footage of and had NO REASON to be digging through the laptop that had no encryption or anything and had **some** legit emails and stuff on it that could have been gathered and planted from other sources but we won't really know because they didn't ever release the hard drive info out to non-hyper-conservstive spruces to verify. It's the most transparent October surprise plant that intentionally to sway the election I could imagine.

Having heard much of Mr Harris but not watched him speak I was expecting a far deeper and considerate response to the issues raised - but I found him to be a classicly self-important intellectual who has formed his cast-iron opinions about things to the point that they are unquestionable, at least to his mind. Quite the reverse of someone like Jordan Petersen who, much of the time, shows humility by actually questioning himself and his conclusions. Disappointing.
Peterson is filled with crippling self-doubt, and that is what generally keeps him on the straight and narrow. Harris is filled with his own self-importance and thus gives no consideration for the possibility that he's deeply flawed.

I've been following Sam since the beyond belief: Science, religion, survival sessions. Since then I have listened to thousands of hours in total since I've listened to him for so many years. I agree with most of his perspectives and there presupositions like religion, human experience, etc. But... I noticed this about 3 years ago and a few months ago on his own podcast the solidified crystal of Trumpism was lain bare. Tho I see Sam as a person, it doesnt tarnish that what I do value of what I have learned, But it's incredibly dissappointing that Years of talking about honest and letting go of emotional control, to only see him just ignore all of that is dissappointing. On Religion, I agree with his core perspective of Humans having the capacity for knowing how to be better than our forebares via religion, But Jordan Peterson gives the practical perspective of humans devoid of connection of what human experience is, and that requires you to connect and listen from the lessons learned from the trials experienced of those in the past.
One of the great things that came of it is the hope it brings me to see so many people that can follow someone for so long and then disagree openly. Strong minds.

Yes, he is. I was an ardent supporter and fan of his for many years, but during the Trump years, his Twitter capture started to shine through. About a year ago he did a podcast explaining why he personally contacted Jack Dorsey to have Trump removed. This was shocking behavior from a one time personal hero. It was when he started raving about NFTs that I turned off the podcast and desubscribed from it and his meditation app. It hurts me to know how low Twitter and ego have dragged this once great man.

I used to be heavily leftwing and militantly atheist. Looking back, these "four horseman" of atheism have a very naïve LITERAL perspective on religion. I respect their intellects (some of them) but they missed the point and never once asked themselves what religion was adapted for. Religion was designed for social cohesion, traditions, celebrations, and community - usually by means of parables about morality, philosophy, and culture (memes - in the truest sense of the word). Cultural collapse and the fall of religion and intertwined. It follows that a country of people that don't follow similar beliefs on basic principles such as morality, justice, and metaphysics won't get along and will begin tearing at the seams. We're tribal and territorial animals, but now our tribes are divided politically instead of philosophically, and this doesn't work. What annoys me most about Dawkins is he understands the concept of 'memes' but never applies it to religion because he's so distracted by a literal interpretation of one holy book. It's like reading Lord of the Rings and pointing out to fans that Hobbits aren't actually real, so Frodo's sacrifice and Sam's loyalty are not worth any consideration.
I agree that Sam Harris's opinions on religion are utterly worthless. His arguments sound great while he is speaking but fall apart when criticized because he just gets too many key facts wrong. These include both historical facts and facts about how religious thought works. Most of the "facts" he finds damning are just assumptions based on his prejudices. He has too much contempt for religion to offer a balanced and well-informed criticism.

@j4Rose He lost me when he threw one of his biggest allies under the bus (Bret Weinstein) by having multiple podcasts solely devoted to attacking Weinstein's views on the pandemic while also refusing to have a single conversation with him about it. @@Ciph3rzer0 Well for one, the people/groups I was listening to turned out to be right about many things. I was getting exposed to MORE context, not less than those simply listening to the deliberately de-contextualized media narratives.
For example, I knew back in 2016 that the whole Russia/Trump narrative was likely JUST a Clinton campaign strategy that the establishment decided to pick up and run with. It was in the wikileaks (which people like Sam would have no idea about because the media would not be going to talk about it). Right about the time that the media started running with baseless Trump/Russia stories; there was the leaked email exchange between Clinton campaign staff about trying to tie Trump to Putin. Over the next couple of years, more and more evidence came out from groups like Judicial watch (who actually sue the government and get documents) that were revealing the ties between the completely false Steele dossier, the Clintons, and the laundering of it into the DOJ through the husband of one of Fusion GPS employees. It showed the FBI at the highest levels were corrupt, that they hated Trump and wanted to fix the wrong 2016 result. That they knew the Steele dossier was full of bullshit; but they used it anyhow as the backbone for lying to the FISA court to get spy warrants for people within Trumps campaign.
All of this information I knew years ago and I hope by 2022 you at least have some vague acceptance that the whole Trump/Russia collusion narrative and investigations for years and years were NOTHING but bullshit. People like Sam (and perhaps you by your condescending tone) were never exposed to any of this information because the media he was drank were in on the "get Trump" bandwagon the whole time.. evidence be damned.
I'd suggest to you that his reasoning abilities may have never been that sharp.

I listened to every Sam Harris podcast, till his one on vaccinations, where he stated any of his peers who disagreed, challenged or critiqued the efficiency or outcomes of the new vaccine was either psychotic, schizophrenic or in some way mentally ill. That characterisation of people who disagreed with him was chilling to me. He also said on that podcast in this case he believed that other peers and professionals should be censored on media platforms if they disagreed because they pose such a danger to the population. I couldn't believe my ears after all the support he has been given to speak on sensitive issues. I discovered in that podcast the depth of his intellectual dishonesty and I didn't want to hear anything more of what he had to say.

His reaction to Trump and the pretzel-twist justifications he makes for the whole thing --from Twitter banning to Liz Cheney--illustrates how no one, not even Mr. Reason himself, is immune to bad reasoning when it comes to ideological sacred cows. While I have heard his thoughts on this topic for many (too many honestly) hours, FF and KK got to the heart of his position better than anyone so far, even his own podcast. A stark reminder that we are all human.

But here, in this interview, what really made my jaw drop was when he said that anything, absolutely anything, was better than getting Trump re-elected, and that anything done to that effect was justified. I never thought I'd see Sam Harris defending a "the end justifies the means" approach, especially to politics in a democracy. I am still dumbfounded by this.
I can understand his reasoning for saying that at the time, but then looking at the actual results of Biden's presidency... it doesn't give him any pause for thought? At all?

When I saw that the election was going to be between Trump and Biden, I thought 2 things:
1-That Americans felt they were stuck in a situation where they had to chose between these two was a very clear sign that democracy is dying in the US (don't take me wrong, it's the case in a lot of Western countries). The fact that movements like Unity 2020 were silenced and destroyed rapidly shows how both Reps and Dems don't care about democracy anymore.
2-But between the 2, I'd have chosen Trump. He's a moron, and certainly a misogynistic racist, but at least we knew what to expect from him : sheer stupidity. But with Biden, it was clear from the beginning he was a puppet. I mean, the guy is senile. So now he's president, the world has to wonder : who is actually governing the most powerful country in the world? I'm always a "better the devil you know" kind of guy, so I prefer transparent stupidity to secretive malevolence.

Nuanced thinking often requires openness, empathy, and the ability to critically analyze complex information, which can be demanding for some individuals. Because they don't think for themselves they don't learn how to see multiple facets of a situation.
People hate nuance because its hard to understand. It makes things uncertain. You can't neatly organize nuanced ideas and you can't easily categorize people when their beliefs are nuanced. This gets frustrating for simple minds.
That said, not everyone hates nuance. Some love the complexity and enjoy the finesse required to navigate the subtle details of people, ideas, or art.

I’m surprised (and a little saddened) by how people can’t get beyond Sam’s Trump take. First of all, he opened by saying (and reiterated, later) that he wasn’t sure what the right call was. So he took the opposing side against the opinions of the interviewers. Did you really just want to hear agree? Do you need that validation? That being said, I think it is clear Sam probably would have suppressed the laptop story if it was his call, but even so, he’s such an excellent opponent of wokeism. I’ve been a paying subscriber of Sams for years and cancelled my subscription after this interview. So disappointing. Such an intelligent guy that has made a living pointing out how ideology poisons ones thinking and somehow he has fallen victim to the very thing he warns about. I don’t care if he is anti trump, but he is now in defence of the very machinery that has lied about and smeared him in the past, because now it’s destroying his political enemies.

Its so sad that I had been believing that Sam is stupid about all of this. The more things I find out about Trump, and after listening to the full speech by Trump on January 6th - its quite clear to me that Sam is the only one who's been able to stay sane all along. It's almost unbelievable how he stayed sane all long. Its so similar to the situation where everyone even the greatest scientists could not understand the harm they were doing, and Einstein just saw it and called them out on their bullshit and yet they continued.

For years I believed Sam Harris was right in The Moral Landscape in saying that we could divorce morality from religion. After seeing his rapid decline into authoritarian consequentialism, I believe he has become the personification of why his argument was flawed.

I thought the same thing. it is honestly to follow his explanation. They ask how he felt about twitter’s response to the Hunter Biden laptop and he starts his answer and pretty quickly says “let’s put that to the side”…and continues to go on about something but not the laptop. It was like he knew that he couldn’t explain his reasoning in an intellectual way so he didn’t want to touch it.
On any other topic, I have found him crystalline and efficient with words. On Trump, its soooo much hot air.

I love these guys, saw them on Rogan, just loved their personality on the show. And seeing their show they're just great interviewers, it's kinda like the closest thing we have to good journalism rn, just not taking a biased approach, letting someone talk and if they slip up on their own accord that's on the interviewee not the interviewer. (Its not investigative reporting, but it's just taking an unbiased approach to literally everyone, and that's something that's been lacking alot today).
In the second half, I think it comes off quite openly that Harris can't reflect on his own statements, and how when he brings up Black Lives Matter, he's isn't critical of the religiosity of it at all. He doesn't even have the self awareness to be critical of its founder robbing millions to fund her mansions.

I've never been a huge Harris fan, but I've always found his quirky perspective to be a valuable addition to the IDW. This interview completely collapses any respect I have for him, however. Why is it BS? All news orgs at the time (and especially with hindsight) knew the laptop story was bunk. At a minimum, you can't trace the chain of custody and integrity of the data let alone if it came from Biden. I forget exactly, but we had like, Rudy Juliana had copies of a disk from a blind guy who made copies off of a laptop that said "hunter" on it dropped off by a guy he could not recognize and has no footage of and had NO REASON to be digging through the laptop that had no encryption or anything and had **some** legit emails and stuff on it that could have been gathered and planted from other sources but we won't really know because they didn't ever release the hard drive info out to non-hyper-conservstive spruces to verify.

Having heard much of Mr Harris but not watched him speak I was expecting a far deeper and considerate response to the issues raised - but I found him to be a classicly self-important intellectual who has formed his cast-iron opinions about things to the point that they are unquestionable, at least to his mind. Quite the reverse of someone like Jordan Petersen who, much of the time, shows humility by actually questioning himself and his conclusions.
Disappointing.
Peterson is filled with crippling self-doubt, and that is what generally keeps him on the straight and narrow. Harris is filled with his own self-importance and thus gives no consideration for the possibility that he's deeply flawed.

I've been following Sam since the beyond belief: Science, religion, survival sessions. Since then I have listened to thousands of hours in total since I've listened to him for so many years.
I agree with most of his perspectives and there presupositions like religion, human experience, etc.
But...
I noticed this about 3 years ago and a few months ago on his own podcast the solidified crystal of Trumpism was lain bare. Tho I see Sam as a person, it doesnt tarnish that what I do value of what I have learned, But it's incredibly dissappointing that Years of talking about honest and letting go of emotional control, to only see him just ignore all of that is dissappointing.
On Religion, I agree with his core perspective of Humans having the capacity for knowing how to be better than our forebares via religion, But Jordan Peterson gives the practical perspective of humans devoid of connection of what human experience is, and that requires you to connect and listen from the lessons learned from the trials experienced of those in the past.
One of the great things that came of it is the hope it brings me to see so many people that can follow someone for so long and then disagree openly.

Yes, he is. I was an ardent supporter and fan of his for many years, but during the Trump years, his Twitter capture started to shine through. About a year ago he did a podcast explaining why he personally contacted Jack Dorsey to have Trump removed. This was shocking behavior from a one time personal hero. I've been a huge fan of Sam Harris for the last 15 or so years , my introduction to him was the end of faith book, excellent read.

I used to be heavily leftwing and militantly atheist. Looking back, these "four horseman" of atheism have a very naïve LITERAL perspective on religion. I respect their intellects (some of them) but they missed the point and never once asked themselves what religion was adapted for. Religion was designed for social cohesion, traditions, celebrations, and community - usually by means of parables about morality, philosophy, and culture (memes - in the truest sense of the word). Cultural collapse and the fall of religion and intertwined. It follows that a country of people that don't follow similar beliefs on basic principles such as morality, justice, and metaphysics won't get along and will begin tearing at the seams. We're tribal and territorial animals, but now our tribes are divided politically instead of philosophically, and this doesn't work.
What annoys me most about Dawkins is he understands the concept of 'memes' but never applies it to religion because he's so distracted by a literal interpretation of one holy book. It's like reading Lord of the Rings and pointing out to fans that Hobbits aren't actually real, so Frodo's sacrifice and Sam's loyalty are not worth any consideration.
I agree that Sam Harris's opinions on religion are utterly worthless. His arguments sound great while he is speaking but fall apart when criticized because he just gets too many key facts wrong. These include both historical facts and facts about how religious thought works. Most of the "facts" he finds damning are just assumptions based on his prejudices. He has too much contempt for religion to offer a balanced and well-informed criticism.

This is extremely sad to me. I loved waking up the book and his free will book. He was always one of my favorite thinkers. He stood for free speech, stood next to hitch, and always brought forth rational & well thought out responses. However it seems as though covid and Trump broke his brain. He’s another victim. He took the stance of being pro-mandate and pro vax. He didn’t challenge the cdc & the sketchy data coming out. Further, It was so sad seeing him be pro-Censorship and be against freedom of information. he took the weird stance of “orange man bad no matter what” which can be seen in this interview.

Sam Harris, one of the people I've been following for years because of his intellictual honesty, courage and brilliancy suffers from TDS to the point where he breaks away from all of the things that I've admired him for. @j4Rose He lost me when he threw one of his biggest allies under the bus (Bret Weinstein) by having multiple podcasts solely devoted to attacking Weinstein's views on the pandemic while also refusing to have a single conversation with him about it. He supposedly found Weinstein's views so dangerous that he couldn't give him an audience to discuss them. I don't know if it was Trump that broke him mentally, the pandemic, or both, but he's lost himself.
