I went up about two rows on the existing roof and pulled up the shingles and tied them in underneath.

How did you determine the angle of the cut for the rafters tying into the existing roof? I am a Weekend Warrior so I am sure the answer is obvious...I just didn't want to keep cutting until I found it.

I determined what angle the roof line was going to be with a string line. Once I found that out I was able to put a long angle cut on the rafter. The lean-to roof was a 3/12 and my barn was a 5/12 so the long cut was a long 2/12 which I think was around 70 degrees.

Hold a level on the roof and measure down at 12 inches. This number will be the pitch. Then use the same pitch on your square to make the cut

Came to find out how to find the rafter angles.

The long angle was a 70 degree. I used a string Lin to find the long angle. I put it on top of the rafter and brought it out till it hit the existing roof line then measured from that point back to the rafter that will give you the length of your top and then square down from that mark on your rafter then connect those to marks and that will give you your angle. It is a little hard to explain it. Maybe I will make a video on it.

At 5:03 you show the ends of the rafters and then later you are seen cutting the end pieces for those rafters but how did you attach them to the ends? did you just butt them up to each other and then what add side bracing? also why not just use longer 2x8's and cut the angles on them making the first set og rafters 1 piece? I am only asking because I was looking to build a very similar roof and was hoping to see how you attached it to the existing roof.
    Thanks

I had to cut angles out of 8 footers and scabbed them to the 2x8’s. Those are 16footers and to get anything longer I would have had to use I joist and the cost would go through the roof. Literally! Lol

@@TheHobbyFarmHomestead Thanks, I am only going out 12 feet from my barn so hopefully 16’ 2x8x16’ will give me about 7 1/2 feet height at the outside wall.
Thank you, I did watch your time lapse after My comment and seen what you did Cool!😀

Sorry that it didn’t help you out with your project. This is one of my earliest videos and it is not very informative and I apologize for that. I don’t know why RUclips is promoting this video so much, for this reason I can’t take it down. Let me know if you need help with something. I can try to help you out.

Dude I I watched this video to get some ideas on tying a lean to roof into an existing roof.
Can't say how disappointed I am....
    No ideas no pointers NADA.....
You drug us along to watch you unload your trailer...
Watched you place every single rafter and watched you cut some angles that I guess you are going to nail to the existing roof? And somehow scab onto the rafters...
    This video is extremely informational...
    Boring....
I have never ever left anyone a bad review.... ever
But this video takes the cake....
    Sorry for being so blunt

I agree with you, this is one of my oldest videos and it was poorly edited and made. I was going to take it down but it gets to many views.
