This might be the best video on RUclips for intersecting the roof decking together with the chalk lines together. It’s not even super long in explanation but I’ll take it!
I've been around roofing for many years, always admired the skill that it takes to bring separate roof lines together with the precision it takes to lay a roof that does not pitch. Craftmen here!
I lost my roof in the last hurricane and spent nearly 3 days awake trying to get everything dried back in. I watched this video an easy 10 times on the 3rd day, and I couldn't comprehend anything. I thought you were being difficult. I watched it after finishing, and everything is so simple 😅 Thank you!
A thousand thank you's. I am building my own home and this part had me a bit confused. I can easily see now how that works. It is actually understandable. Mark your angle on one, use the saw to cut the other angle. Very cool. I used the framers square to layout common rafters and it worked like a dream. Also good for stair risers.
As my dad would say, you’re talking a mile a minute! 😂It’s obvious you know what you’re doing… maybe after I watch it a few more times it’ll sink in. Nice work.
Haha I tried to keep it as fast as possible. When you’re in the field working there’s nothing worse than a 45 min video that could’ve been 5. Thanks David!
Excellent video. Helped me get the job done I'm sure in half the time. Only question I have is at time 5:09 to 5:11 you can see the corner that is created by the rafter tails. The 6:12 water drainage will hit the 8:12 rafter tails at a 90 degree angle. That is exactly how mine is. How do you frame/roof that corner or do you just put flashing on the side of the 8:12 truss tails where the 6:12 drainage will hit it?
Very nicely done, not for the amateur , what kind of truss stabilizers are you using. Where I come from this is called a California gable, you have answered quite a few questions
Thank you, they are Simpson Brand and come in a fold of I believe 8 spacers that unfold. They are pricey and very sharp but are incredibly strong and make the process fast.
I just take a string top and bottom of the truss and pull over to the other roof with an inch and a half block Mark the block where it touches my string snap that line on both sides that's where my valley pads will go then drop my ridge board in to plain out cut all of my jacks and pin it all together
I'm a GC in California...it's hard to teach the youngsters nowadays..most are stuck on Stupid..I believe in teaching young so trade doesn't fade away....You do a good job of explaining what you were working on..thanks for doing video's..if you teaching 1 or 2 that get it that's awesome...
Not exactly sure what they’re called, I just got them from my local lumber yard, they call them truss spacers. They fold up and allow you to temporarily connect them at exactly 2’ without having to measure. You just leave them on there and sheet over them. Quite expensive but really speed things up!
Im still confused about how you use thw triangle to create the angle. What do you mean what numbers are you matching on the triangle to get the angle ?
I’m about to frame this same roof with the same pitch only mine is dying into a 6/12 I gotta repeat this same roof for 144 homes easier said than done 😂 but I been at it for a while it’s my 6th year as a journeyman & I did a 4 year apprenticeship it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these just wanted to refresh my memory thanks for all the good info I’m from California out here we call this a California roof 😂 nice video
hey bud, thanks for a great video! Would you recommend fixing the dog house ridgebeam onto a rafter on the main roof? Or is onto the OSB okay? How thick would you want that OSB to be? Cheers!
I’m not a carpenter but I believe the osb is more than adequate. If you remembered to do the math before hand, blocking underneath the osb at that intersection would be best practice. The rafters are supporting a vast majority of the weight so I wasn’t concerned with such a small roof. Cheers!
i think it depends upon how much load (snow, etc) will be put on the roof, and how long the ridge is. one end of the that ridge will carry 1/4 of the weight of the area of the assembly. if in doubt, just add some blocking between the trusses underneath the sheathing
Chalk box and a pencil. Level doesn't fit in my pouches. 😅😅😅 Oh yeah Construction Pro Master calculator is great for this too. 😂😂😂 Then I'm retired and just like puttin in my two pennies... Grandpa said "look at the nail where it goes into the wood, not the head."
Say if you are building an extension and on the original roof you have guttering, soffit, fascia etc and the rafters overhang. Would you have to trim all this back so it is flush to where your walls will be of your extension?
I’m not a carpenter but I would likely stop at the ridge and build a small triangle to side. I’d be concerned about flashing if you roofed past that point and did a dog house down.
In the RUclips age, anyone can be a framer! Nice video! This is going to help me build my house. When I mean, build my house, I mean, actually build my house - not hire a contractor and say "we're building a house" - You're not building a house, you hired someone lol. I'm building the mofo! Peace brother!

@rnRanch I've been stuck renting for 2 decades. We're in Arizona, and because of the clowns moving from California, real estate and rent has skyrocketed. We're moving to another state and I'm buying a lot and building a small home - about 1200 sqft. Kids are grown now. I have skills, but I don't know everything (obviously). So it's videos like this that will help me figure out the details - like how to join two rooves. It's going to be a ranch home, but I want to add a little character to the house by adding a front porch and foyer area in the front. So I need to join two roofs to do that.
Question: what do you think about a 2/12 pitch addition to the long side of a house with a 10/12 pitch? New England home, so lots of rain and snow. We just bought it and there’s lots of water damage in the valley connecting them
I’m not an expert but personally I would never go flatter than a 3:12. I’d say if you can’t change the pitches, ice and water the entire bottom roof and 2 rows up the 10:12. Sorry to hear about the issues but congrats on the new purchase!
Your channel should be called "The Practical Carpenter". I have a possible garage project coming up. I want scissors trusses for 22' (over my shop) and I would like to stick build the remaining 16" for a loft/living area. The loft area roof will intersect the trusses. I'm at a loss on how to frame this intersection. Bet you know! Any help would be awesome and I can send a sketch.
Thanks for showing how to do this which from your video I pretty much understand it all plus if done my fair share carpentry work. But I wish you could explain how to do the rafters where the fascia connects to both roofs because to me that’s the hardest part. For some reason there is not that many videos showing that process which is so important to connect that area properly for shingles and for looks.
Absolutely! and yes I share your same frustration. The reason I didn't go into detail on that in the video was honestly mine did not turn out very good either and I didn't want to mislead people. It can be very difficult to get both sides perfect, especially with how inaccurate these trusses were! Always room for improvement and I appreciate the constructive help on the channel!
