    Blanket Time is a simple concept to getting your kids to listen.
    Place a Blanket on the floor, have your toddler sit with a few toys and they do not get off until MOM says.
    Doing this on a regular basis anywhere from 10 min - 1 hr will help your kids with their ability to focus, lengthen their attention span, self entertain,and teach them to listen to their parents!

    The comments are breaking my heart!!!! How could anyone let a child cry????? :( Goes against every human instinct. As for BabyWise it's a HORRIBLE book and even the AAP says it's practices damaging. I'm not saying you're a bad mom. You're probably a great mom. I'm just not okay with promotion of a book I feel teaches abuse. Calluses children aren't what this world needs ((MOTHER OF 3))

    This is sick. Kids aren't meant to sit still. Kids are meant to explore, run, laugh, play. Dogs need to be obedient not children. You are literally teaching them to not have curiosity or explore their world. Gross.

    I love your attitude toward parenting and if you come across an issue you don't stay frustrated with it you take the time to figure it out and show your kids that all things in life worth doing are worth giving your all. You are patient and that shows them to be patient as well, it's totally brilliant and you are an amazing Mother for it! Kudos. :)

  • @BhappyD
    @BhappyD 9 лет назад +72

    The ORIGINAL "Blanket Training" method (using a rod to beat the child if they move off the blanket, as young as 6 months, until they literally stay on the blanket out of sheer terror), let's be honest, is just flat out abuse, and very damaging to children. However if, and only IF, blanket "time" is done correctly, mindfully, compassionately, and responsibly, it can be a helpful time for children. It is very clear to me that Bonnie is an amazing mom, and her kids are proof of that. She is doing "blanket time" in a way that is beneficial to her children, not harmful. A half-hour to an hour of "quiet time" each day is not abusing your children, certainly not when you are providing them with a way to entertain themselves and then they spend the rest of the day free to run about and play with each other. Children SHOULD learn the skill of how to entertain themselves, and how to self soothe (obviously not too early). I grew up as an only child, and I spent A LOT of my time playing by myself and entertaining myself. While my mother never used "blanket time", she certainly made sure that I learned how to listen and behave myself when we were out in public, and at home. It wasn't abuse for me to quietly play by myself, and I learned valuable life skills because of it. If you watch Bonnie's vlogs, you can see that her children are always playing with each other and their cousins and friends. They are always entertained with activities or playing outside, being creative, using their imagination, and getting their hands dirty. I don't believe that Bonnie is using "blanket time" for purely selfish reasons. It has benefits for both the mother, AND the child. She is flexible with it, and adjusts the time based on how the child is feeling/doing. In my opinion, she is doing everything right. As a parent, you get to decide how you choose to raise your children. If you don't like it or it doesn't work for your family, then don't do it. It's that simple. But all of these accusations that Bonnie is a bad parent and damaging her children are out of line. While I don't agree with the majority of information or methods that Babywise preaches, I believe that certain methods and techniques can be altered to where they CAN be effective and beneficial to children, and to me, Bonnie has presented a perfect example of how to change a once harmful and damaging method into something that is now beneficial to her children and family. Like I said, that is just my opinion, and EVERYONE is welcome to make their own parenting decisions and raise their children how they see fit. :)

    • @amielawson8344
      @amielawson8344 7 лет назад +2

      Brittany exactly. I don't believe Bonnie is using this in a method that hits or abuses the child, I think it is her way of the kiddos having quiet time. No different then having they sit in their bed for an hour to read or color or some other quiet activity.
      Now for those that hit or do this in infancy, that is a whole other topic. Like Bonnie said she starts around 18 months, which is about the time we started doing quiet time. Her children are obviously allowed to run around and play and be loud, but teaching children there are certain times to be quiet is also a good thing.

    Hi Bonnie, I have a question for you. When you film these videos which you are looking at the camera giving your viewers information, do you ever write or look at script? I am trying to start my RUclips channel that has teaching component and I have a very hard time speaking without scripts! I forget things I wanted to say. So I would appreciate it if you can share how you perfectly shoot these videos. Is it something people get better over time and it is ok to start with sort of memorizing a script or some people are just good at speaking without scripts to begin with? You look absolutely beautiful in this video and the way you speak is very natural. Thanks, Bonnie!

    You are inspiring. In a world where I see things going so wrong (no rules, no consequences, even society trying to blur the concept of right and wrong) you are boldly doing what is right. I have been getting a little depressed at how crazy things are getting but to see you so confidently being an "in charge" parent, a parent in control of her children without apology...you have restored my hope. I wish there were more people like you (this is my first video, I might be stating the obvious but I am guessing you are a Christian. Not a twice a year Christian but a true, live it everyday Christian. We need more of that as well, I think the loss of that is why we are in such a terrible way) anyway, I just loved everything about you so I had to tell you. Thank you for making me feel more positive, keep it up, you are doing a wonderful thing:)

My 3 year old recently decided he wasn't going to nap anymore and it was a BIG struggle/nightmare for a few weeks lol so started doing quiet time instead but im going to try blanket time..it seems like a really good way for him to get calm time alone and rest a bit while I do what ever I need to do. He also is bad about running around at the doctors so hopefully this'll help. Hes a really good boy and listens the majority of the time but id like for him to be able to sit still if I need him to. I have been in the ECE field for 20 yrs and I have never had the success of having a child sit for that amount of time. Kuddos to you. My daughter is 7 and I am VERY fortunate that I never experienced her not listening or sitting when we were out. She just sat with her books or toys with out me having to struggle with her. My youngest just turned two last month on the 2nd. I am at the point where at the doctors he is running around not minding and I'll leave the appointment in tears or at a restaurant, I'll even bring a bag full of toys that last 2 mins literally. I am also 34weeks pregnant. I never thought of "blanket time" but have used baby wise for sleep. My question is; do you think by 6 weeks my son will fully understand the concept so that when the baby is born I can take advantage of it for appointments or even trying to get ready since he will be ripping the bathroom apart and chasing him around the house.
    Thank you for the video, it couldn't have came in a better time of need.

I did have a few questions about how to start, i was wondering do you use the same blanket every time? also how often do you do it? like once a day or more? i totally want to do this and want it to work i think its an awesome way to teach independent play and early discipline without really having to discipline. Also thanks for the tip on not saying anything until you get home as to not embarrass your kids. i am so going to try my best to remember that. i think its such an important smart way to do things!

    I remember my mom doing almost the exact same thing with my little brother! He was not a good napper but he was cranky from being tired and still very much needed a nap, so she would get his bean bag and sit him down for a "movie nap." He had to sit there for the duration of his "movie" (more like a 15 minute episode or video) and then go to sleep. Thank you for being a parent that actually parents!

    Im always very sceptical of BabyWise purely from a professional stand point.
    But working in a preschool, the contrast between the children that were taught to respect adults and behave in an appropriate and well mannered way and the kids that were taught that their parents are their friends and that they are allowed what they want when they want it is HUUUGE.
    big clap for you Bonnie because you are raising brilliant kids that are loved and happy, you've managed to find a great balance :)

    I cannot speak enough of the overall importance of training children to be able to be still, quiet, self-entertaining, etc. It trains them for good manners, for church, school, waiting in the doctor's office, travel by plane, train, car, bus, and establishes in them the ability to self-soothe and lengthens their attention span.. We're not talking about hours and hours of blanket training a day, but beginning with short periods. It establishes in them, as they grow into adulthood, to have inner discipline and obedience. It is not cruel. It does not involve corporal punishment. This mom is doing so many good things with her little ones. It's not much different than putting them in a playpen, which I guess have gone away with the dinosaurs! This is the type of child-training that many people are placing their children in karate for....letting someone else train their children! You go, mama!

    How long did you do the 10-15mins before you bumped them up to more time? And then How long when they got to an hour did you sit right there with them? I love this so I can clean, talk on the phone or cook dinner that's when I have the most problems.

    Ok..I'm a stay at home mom with three. My son will be five in a few weeks, and I wish I would have done something like this! He is a beautiful and SUPER strong-willed boy. I imagine it's too late :-(. How would this work for my two year old if her older brothers are busy? Do older kids ever BEG to get off?

    What a great idea! Once my daughter is a little bit bigger i will be doing this! One thing i really liked when i used to babysit a little girl and her brother was that they had "quiet time" everyday, their mom would put them each in their own room and tell them we are going to have quiet time and they were able to play with few toys or read a book but the whole point was to self entertain and keep them in one area while things got done around the house. Great advice, cant wait to try this.
