- The story of the birth of Jesus Christ has been told for centuries. The account usually begins with the annunciation to Mary or the appearance of the angel to the shepherds, yet Matthew begins his Nativity story with the genealogy of Jesus. The long list of names can cause us to skim or even skip this portion completely. But Matthew appears to be teaching us a powerful message about the Messiah by recording His lineage.

The example of Jesus is similar to Adam, God created him from clay, then God almighty said BE, and IT IS . Jesus, son Mary never claimed to be neither God nor son of God. Jesus son of Mary was a prophet of God almighty sent to the people of Israel to correct their many mistakes and falsehood.
Jesus son of Mary spoke about the upcoming prophet that would carry the everlasting message . He clearly meant the prophet Mohammad and the Quran.

Thank you for posting this and looking at the unknowns was something I never considered before. A sign that we’re all important no matter that we’re not political or religious leaders. Everyone is important in God’s eyes by His unconditional love, we’re all important in God’s purpose and in His plan. These ones brought Jesus into the world so how can we bring His love to the world in our day by the small things we do and say.

It is wonderful. And my name means God is gracious. And merciful. And I was dying as a baby I was so very sick. The doctor had given up hope on me and so he sent me home over the weekend to die because of a brain injury. And then God did His miracle and I was healed over night and healthy and thankful. ❤️ I was given the perfect name. I have been a Christian and followed Jesus my whole life and I am also raising my kids as loving Christians in the world that has so much dark pain and deceit in it. We are to stand strong and lean on the Lord. Amen. 🙏

I’m beginning to read Matthew and I saw this 15 verse long genealogy and I was thinking of skipping, but after watching this video I now see why every person in Jesus’ genealogy weather they were spiritually powerful, politically powerful, or not powerful at all an considered commoners, all of them played an equally important part in bringing the messiah to the earth.
In other words, god can use any one no matter who they are and where they come from!

Thank you for this. I loved teaching the lineage in my seminary class a few months ago. The connections you bring out about the women and us as links in a wonderful chain - even if we aren't recognized for it - were powerful!
Glad you enjoyed it! Teaching the genealogy in seminary would be interesting! I could see the kids either having their eyes glaze over, or really enjoying it if it was done right. My mom when she watched the video said "there were woman in the genealogy? I guess I didn't even notice them!" I think that is sadly too often what happens. In particular this portion, where their names are buried in a list of begats.
@@messagesofChrist I didn't dwell on it for too long but found it really interesting that the geneaology comes through Joseph. Of course, Mary was Joseph's cousin so it works, but to have Joseph play an integral role in the lineage was a great starting point to a discussion on how amazing Joseph really was. One of my favorite quotes about Joseph is this:
“When Mary was found to be with child, Joseph, knowing he was not the father, had several options. First, he could have subjected Mary to a public divorce and perhaps even execution, for people would have presumed that Mary was guilty of adultery-a crime punishable by death under the law of Moses (see Leviticus 20:10; John 8:5). Second, Joseph could have had his betrothal to Mary privately annulled before two witnesses. A third option was to proceed with the marriage. Joseph was inclined to show mercy to Mary by quietly annulling the betrothal agreement (see Matthew 1:19). However, when assured by an angel that Mary’s child was the Son of God, Joseph elected to marry her, though doing so could have brought upon him public shame and ridicule (see Matthew 1:20-25; Luke 3:23; John 8:41).
“Gerald N. Lund, who later became a member of the Seventy, discussed Joseph’s visions and spiritual sensitivity: ‘Matthew tells us that [Joseph] was of the lineage of King David, that he was a just and considerate man, that in a dream an angel told him who Jesus would be, that he was obedient, and that he gave Jesus his name, which means savior. (See Matt. 1.) We know that he took Mary to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. (See Luke 2:4-6.) Less than two years later, Joseph took his family into Egypt to escape Herod, after being warned in a dream. In Egypt, a dream again told him when to return, and another dream told him to go to Galilee. (See Matt. 2:13-15, 19-22.) Four dreams from God! Joseph must have been an exceptionally visionary and spiritually sensitive man’ (Jesus Christ, Key to the Plan of Salvation [1991], 51-52)” (New Testament Student Manual [Church Educational System manual, 2014], 13-14).
I sometimes feel Joseph is given second-place status, but he was a very important part of the story as Matthew's lineage sets forth.

Another interesting thing is that there is only 13 generations in the last section of the passage. That is unless you have access to the Hebrew Matthew. Apparently Mary's father was also named Joseph.
Wow! Thank you so much! I have been wondering lately "Am I doing enough? Am I reaching enough people?" Intrinsic in those questions seems to be "Am I myself enough?" This video addresses these concerns eloquently!
The beauty of the gospel is the Lord does ask us to be perfect, but he also knows and understands our weaknesses. He starts with where we are not where we hope to be. He sees what we can become, not what we currently are. If you are trying to follow Jesus, than you are enough. Perfection is only possible through Christ, not ourselves. He will work with you wherever you are as long as you come to him and seek him!
Mary’s lineage is given also in Luke, and may be of more importance in regards to the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
