Marvel's The Avengers (classified under the name Marvel Avengers Assemble in the United Kingdom and Ireland), or simply The Avengers, is a 2012 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sixth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the film features an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner as the Avengers, alongside Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård, and Samuel L. One of my favorite character moments in the MCU is Tony saying "And there's one more person you managed to piss off... His name was Phil." especially after his joke with Pepper in the beginning of the movie ("Um, his name is 'Agent'.)

In the original Avengers comic book, their very first adventure that brought them together was caused by Loki. And decades later, when they made a reboot called the Ultimate Universe - in which the Avengers were renamed "The Ultimates", their first adventure was an invasion of Earth by the Chitauri. This movie combines both of those together - and does it really well.
And the Ultimates universe is where Nick Fury became Samuel L. Jackson instead of David Hasselhoff. :-)
@@nathandc IIRC, Marvel asked SLJ if they could use his likeness for Ultimates Nick Fury. And SLJ said "yes" on the condition that if Marvel ever use Fury on screen, he'd get to play Fury. Sounds like it worked out well for everyone involved.

@@dylancole1910 If I'd known the details I outlined, I'd be shocked if Marvel didn't take SLJ up on his offer. Seriously, an A list actor (I suppose that he's an A lister) like SLJ is willing to play a regular, usually small (but not always) recurring role in various Marvel movies and a guy with SLJ's credibility. That seems like a no brainer to me. And frankly, he's been great as Nick Fury.

My favorite thing about Coulson is that once there was damage to the Helicarrier while everyone panicked and had to deal with the problems. He was focused and went straight to secure Loki in the container. That's a man right there.
Tony's not a soldier, but him seeing the portal open up, and an army coming through and his first reaction is to fly towards it blasting. Speaks volumes. Gets me hype everytime.
30:27 That is Thanos. A very VERY big deal of a character that alot of people in theaters when they saw his face reacted with a huge OH CRAP!
I remember when i saw him in theaters, ngl, i was so adamant that it was red skull 😂
When I saw this in the theater, most of the audience knew to stay for the post credit scenes. And most of them seemed to know exactly who the big purple guy was, i.e. Thanos, the Avengers ultimate big bad even in the comics.
At the time I thought it was Kang since I’d never heard of thanos and had recently red a comic with kang.

I love watching people watch these MCU movies for the first time. It’s fun to their reactions and you get to relive it all over. One of the most underrated moments is when Bruce says “that’s my secret, I’m always angry” then changes to The Hulk. It’s the first time we hear The Avengers theme. I’ll have to catch the rest of your reactions.

I'm slightly pissed that they had the line about "courting death" and then changed Thanos' motivation to not have anything to do with Death, the character. Only slightly, though.

Not very many people realize that they are arguing because the scepter is sending out a force of mind manipulation to mess with them. Nice job catching it!
No matter how many times I’ve seen these movies this first one, and the way they finally come together mid-film still gives me chills.
Phil Coulson, for a guy whose seen so little in the MCU, holds a special place in our hearts and it always hurts to watch him die. You should know though, that Phil is actually an epic level hero and he doesn't let death slow him down much. Right after this movie, the Agents of Shield tv show starts up, staring Phil Coulson back to living and kicking ass once again. (Don't worry, how he manages to continue living is a major plot point of the show, so it's not just a cheesy little element of the show to get him back). He forms his own special team that really in many ways does just as much as any MCU hero pretty much. I really suggest you add it to your watch list. While currently not officially Canon with the MCU, several of the next movies are intertwined with the show and even share characters. The series even lines up with Infinity Wars and Endgame. Also, it is simply awesome. If you've liked the movies so far, you will love the show.
Agreed. @Maple should definitely watch Agents of Shield. I think she'd enjoy that show and it'd be fun to re-experience it with someone who has never seen it!
The first four seasons line up pretty well with the movies and don't contradict anything, canon or not. After that, things start to get a little wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey. They probably still follow the alternate timeline rules set up in Endgame, etc. but it departs from the story in the movies at that point.
@@Slugbug I can't get into detail here, but it actually fits still, perfectly actually. Ypu just have to watch Loki first for it to make sense. If you've seen it, then you should be able to clue in how the later seasons in context to what we learn in Loki gives a whole new light on exactly the points you made.

When Fury told Coulson that checking out wasn’t an option, he meant it. Nothing stops Agent Coulson. Certainly not something as petty as death.
Yeah he just needs a vacation. Maybe spend a few weeks in Tahiti.

@@KrazyStylez09 Nothing is non-canon anymore because of the multiverse. Even ignoring that, AoS never called Bobbi "Mockingbird" or agent 19, and even then, the agent 19 in question is retired and the number prolly been recycled.

Absolutely. IMO, easily the most well made Marvel movie.

the sentence that Coulson didn't finish was "this was never gonna work if they didn't have something to avenge."
The staff does have influence over them. You'll learn more about it later on. But it is also affecting Loki.

His eyes were blue throughout the movie. When the Avengers confronted Loki after the battle, his eyes reverted back to normal.

In the book, Legolas actually does run out of arrows at least once. After the battle is over, he can go around picking up any that aren't broken to use again.
I love it when the plan comes together.
Perhaps "Loki's" "secret name" should be "Knifey Boy" or "Stab Man." "I am "The Blue Raja' of Champion City and I am burdened with glorious cutlery!"

Regarding the frequent question, "where's Pepper", their base of operations is in Malibu, California, not in New York. That's why at the end of the "12%" scene, she asked agent Coulson if he could drop her at La Guardia (airport). She was on her way to California when these events were unfolding.
Thankfully they brought Coulson back in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Unfortunately that isn't set in this universe. It is still canon, just in an alternate universe. In this universe he died and stayed dead.
oh my God. "To court death". Or course he would grin. I can't believe I only just figured that one out. (Without spoilers: in the comics, this character is literally in love with Death, which has no bearing on the movie frachise and is just a little fan-service for comic-book nerds).

What an amazing line and character plot point that would end up being the cornerstone premise of the Loki series. All the way from 2012. Just brilliant.
That show pillaged a ton of stuff from better entries in the franchise.
Hulk chasing Black Widow is a direct callback to Iron Monger chasing Pepper in Iron Man. Same sequence and visuals
Pepper had Coulson drop her off at LaGuardia while Tony was doing his homework. I guess she took her 12 percent on a trip

There's was a different Stan cameo filmed, that also involved that blonde girl from the bank, flirting with Steve in a cafe, which is why we get the shot of her looking at Steve without his helmet on. She's thinking "Oh, so that's who that hot guy is!"

As you would expect, the events of this film has an impact on all 3 remaining Avenger films as well as Ironman 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Battle of New York is also referenced in a flashback, giving the origins of one of the villains in Phase 3 and so s shown again in one of the Disney+ series

Stark directing the nuke into the wormhole is the literal definition of "thinking on the fly".
Edit; someone should make an edit of the complete MCU "Battle of New York" timeline, in 2012; including all the relative Endgame, What If?, Loki and Dr Strange footage that occurred in that "timestream". I'd watch the hell outta that ;)

No offense but you made me laugh so hard when you said "NYPD what are you gonna do??" And then immediately followed it with "Where is Pepper??" As if she could be doing anything against the aliens lmao.
Interesting note: When the nuke hit the Mother Ship... except for the fact that it would be a LOT brighter, that is pretty much what a nuke in space WOULD look like. A perfect sphere of energy.
one thing that is a little bit dumb is that gamma radiation travels with the speed of light (beta radiation with 90% and alpha with 10%). Tony was so close to the explosion that he surely would have died due to radiation sickness. Moreover in the vacuum of space there is nothing that could absorb the radiation on its way to tony which means the radiation (even if it was only slightly) would have been stronger than it would have been on earth from the same distance. There is no way that you get no radiation sickness being so close to a nuclear explosion.
@@dryder7078 With the possible saving grace being the armor - it's supposedly NBC sealed. It technically might not be enough to save him completely, but it may have been enough to reduce the exposure. In addition, one thing to remember is the square-cubed falloff ratio. He also may have not gotten the full duration of exposure, since the gate slammed shut during the chain reaction. We also don't know the full yield of the warhead... do we?
However, you're right. If certain events hadn't happened, he would probably have died of cancer in a few years.
21:14 Absolutely, the more of the references you get from firsthand experience, the more you get out of these movies. That said, I think the "Point Break"reference went straight past many reactors so far, which is a shame, because it's a brilliant movie (well, stupid fun, at least!).
The Point Break reference was the best one of all, and I love the callback to it in Phase 3
Make sure Maple sees the One-Shot featurette "Item 47" which takes place next!
If she wants more Coulson, start her on "Agents of SHIELD" after "Iron Man 3"!

Tony in this one movie proved Steve wrong and maybe earned some respect from him. Steve said Tony isn't the one to make the sacrifice play and lay down on the wire so another could crawl across. But that's what he did, he was willing to give everything to save the Earth.
I also find it funny all the Avengers pretty much beat Loki at single combat at one point or another. Maybe outside of Natasha but she out smarts him which is probably a bigger blow to his ego..

I wasn't really interested in the show at all, but my son urged me to give it a try. I was instantly hooked by the beautiful animation and the depths of the characters. Such a well done series.

I commented in the premiere that i like the characters, but didn't like the story or storytelling much. I am happy the avengers made bank and solidified the mcu. Whedon is a good writer and a decent director. Avengers and Avengers Ultron always felt oppressively Whedon. In my view he often congratulates himself with clever plotpoints. And sure he is clever, just not subtle. The dialogue and conflicts also feel very artificial. I think Maple highlighted the near pointless conflicts between the characters. I mean these would fit perfectly in firefly or buffy, not so much with the avengers. Every director has his style and voice, no problem with that. I just think his sensibilities and marvel characters don't fit imo.
