Oh my goodness 😮 this is my first time watching you & loving it! Then during your tour talking about the downsizing you talk about your sweet sow….❤ How hilarious because that is my name😮😊 Dianh
Getting the animals out of a back pasture is so much easier if they are used to getting grain once in awhile! Even if you don't do it every day, you shake the grain bucket and they learn that brings a treat! It's a great way to catch loose livestock!
Downsizing to fit your family sounds like a great idea!! We would love to see more projects, in addition to your always interesting cooking and gardening content!! 🌱🌱🌱💕
I love that you're going to share both the home keeping and homestead keeping on the same channel. I can't wait to see all the projects and all the changes that the warm weather will bring
Posting up is what we always called it but people from the States say everything different. I grew up on a farm we sure didn’t have a lot of money . ( potting not posting ). God Bless.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💞💓🥰🤗
Whew, at the beginning I thought oh no but then it turned around. I am so happy for you two, and so nice to see Dan in the video! It's so nice to see a couple that do pro's and con's, my husband and I do the same ~ along with problem solving. I can see your happiness, which is wonderful. God Bless!
Sounds like a good plan for your family. You’re not the only homestead that is cutting it back and diversifying. I think many are doing what they need to for their family and getting projects done. Those of us without homesteads are doing the same thing. We all see what is happening around us and making life choices to go forward. Love that you are willing to take us along. Love watching and learning.
Fantastic video!! I love the videos where you are out on the land and show us a variety of things that are going on ❤️ Thank you! Oh...also...I will be fun to see Dan in more videos 😁👏
You're reminding us of 2 key survival elements- flexibility & resilience. Adaptation to ever-changing circumstances based on rational problem-solving not knee-jerk reactions . Your process & your honesty in presenting it is awe-inspiring. Thanks for including us! 👍👍
Love the update. Oh wow the seedlings are looking amazing :) Can you spray the really strong vinegar on the quack grass? I am going to try it this year on a certain area around my garden beds where there is grass I do not want. I wanted to last year did not. But I am going to soon. loved this whole video. hugs
How many acres do you own? Do you guys have a five year plan and/or yearly goals for projects/builds/property clean-up? Dan had mentioned the long road on and off your property causing wear and tear on vehicles. Is there a plan for re-grading? I was so glad you guys decided to keep all homestead activities on one channel. Always look forward to any of your video content!
So glad that you are keeping the Ranch!! Your life is so interesting to me!! I love your content!! My prayers are with you!! I love your whole lifestyle!!❤
Boy, you guys have a lot going on. We are having a cool spring also here in SW Tenn. Sprinkle in an 85 degree F here and there (I think that's 30 degrees Celcius?). There are some parts of the North that have had even warmer temps than us in the South. It makes no sense. I LOVE YOUR SHIRT!! I couldn't read the web address at the bottom, however. Is that where you got the shirt??
Your husband is so talented. I'm glad you are keeping your homestead and that you will show the projects. I love gardening but I love seeing the projects too. I love the new raised beds you have and are getting. I'm so excited to see what you Lang in them. Thank you for sharing your family, your homestead and your story
Thank you for posting your honest feelings. This winter and spring has been a challenge on our homestead/farm for the same reasons. Every things feels like a failure because “the list” never gets smaller and grows every time around the property. More projects than time or energy will allow, working full time and trying to balance the old farmstead and garden/ animals, and balancing the desire to spend more time with friends and family, makes one feel like a complete failure at what brings us the joy we seek by being homesteader. Your post helps bring me a reality balance. Need to sit down and weight it out. Thank You both!
Hi ya Chelsea. You know….this is a valuable last couple videos. I know of some folks who have this romantic idea of homesteading but don’t have any idea of the work involved in running one and keeping it going. Your honesty and openness is refreshing. I loved that in the last video you were honest about how some projects hadn’t been done from a few years ago cause of lack of time. I know I have said it before….but I am excited for you guys. Way to go. 🌷🌼🐝
Building the ranch and being able to leave it for the next generation is to me, the best legacy you can leave your children. It makes me happier they didn't want you to sell😊❤It is such amazingly beautiful land.
Your place is beautiful. I think doing all homesteading things together is smart. Even if Dan and friend is doing something different you can share and show what they are doing then he can share more at another time. Wishing you the best success! We have 17 chickens and hope to get beehives by next year.
The sound, albeit difficult business decisions, you guys are making now about your immediate future, are creating the possibilities of a farm centered future. The dividends they will pay, are much broader than just financial ones. Kudos to all the family for the sacrifices and hard work, you’ve put in to get to this point. You guys are inspirational!
Sometimes down sizing to fit your family needs is not so easy as we think. But sometimes it’s good to make those changes to help and better your family’s lifestyle. I’m glad to hear that your able to make those changes and get the help you guys need. I love watching your videos and enjoy seeing your husband Dan in the videos. Enjoying your plants 🌱 and all the animals. I can’t wait to see the end of the basement renovation. ❤
It sounds like you and Dan have put so much thought into how to keep your dream home/property and make it successful. I think it all comes down to choosing a few things and doing it very well vs. trying to do it all and failing at most.
Can you please add where you are getting your metal garden beds from? I've been looking for some and would rather use a Canadian company. Thank you so much for everything you and your family show us!
In one of your videos could you possibly go over your milking machine and where you got it and the name of it? I would very much appreciate it thank you.
I think that showing us the reality of Homesteading during these economic times is genius! Also showing that folks can keep what they have with creative culling
I can feel the excitement & love through the screen. Homesteading is not an easy lifestyle. It’s hard and rewarding at the same time. Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. Hugs, Doc❤
Oh my gosh I went to vernon today, 25 min drive, in a sweater then on way back it was 20 degrees and did not need pants or a sweater lol Crazy , suppose to be this for over a week
A milk house to keep all the milking gear might be an idea for you...although like you say, it is an excuse for exercise. Plants look great. An idea for your green house that I am considering ....a wood boiler outside that pumps glycol through pipes to radiators...then put a fan behind them to blow the hot air around...this would allow you to regulate the heat in the greenhouse a little better. I think it should be able to be done with solar to run the pump and two fans...just an idea. Plants look nice! Ya gotta love quack grass - I ended up cutting up feed bags and using that with squash planted in them plus a few raised beds. I am trying the woven weed fabric this year. Basement is coming along nicely. Good video!
It is so exciting with all your plans for the future and a good idea not to have too many livestocks. I have the same frustrations with that grass, so you are not alone!! It is extremely difficult to eradicate! All the best to you and your family.
I am so enjoying the content but I think I missed something. Can you explain how Dan was able to “come home” and when that happened?. I think there is a lot of wisdom in your simplification plan.
Use the plastic bags they use for silage storage in your garden ! It works wonders, I used in my garden , it saved me! I could not keep up with weeds once it was tilled with cow manure..never again . Chicken or mushroom or 2 year old manure, I didnt know they used fresh ... oh my it took years to clean up but the plastic from silage bags did the trick
Wonderful to see both of you excited about your ranch plans. I’m looking forward to seeing your plans come together. FYI, I freeze leftover chipotle sauce in freezer bags and break off parts to put into recipes. I learned this from my daughter and she learned from me that you can freeze fresh whole ginger (bonus frozen is easier to grate).
All sounds very familiar, cattle farmer here from Southeast Missouri. Cutting back on sales to individuals also, because row cropping is astronomical. Also got out of pigs because just can’t make much money on them. Consolidating all our acreage to pasture and hay. Work smarter not harder.
Your making the right decision for your future and to be self sustaining and make quality time to spend with your family.. I wish you all the best… I’m watching from Annapolis Maryland USA
Sounds like you've both given this a lot of thought and made some solid. practical decisions. Good for you. No reason these plans shouldn't improve things and give you both a bit of breathing room. Best wishes!
That's a very difficult step that you're taking. I'm glad that you were able to understand what you need and are able to do with limited energy and time. And that you have the strength to follow through.
So sorrycthe present economic situation is forcing you to make thse hard decisions! I send prayers for your peace of mind, and for strength for you and your family. I pray each day for this troubled world and for all the innocient good peoole caught in the middle! You are super blessed in many ways, because of all the ways you are already self sustaining. Your planning and hard, hard work has made this possible. Hugs from Costa Rica!
Hi Chelsea from our farm in New Hampshire. Practical decision to downsize your herd. Our pastures can support about 20 cows and their calves, plus the bull. We do not raise pigs. We buy organic pork from our neighbor, thus helping to support their farm. We also buy chicken and eggs from them. Another neighboring farm sells us honey. Our 40 open acres produced 7,000 bales last season. Sometimes there is a third cutting. That is enough for us to manage. You are correct, the price of grain is discouraging many people to keep more animals than they actually need. One good source of meat is registered meat rabbits. I would raise them in small a bunny barn. They can be fed with minimal grain if you can grow some of their food. Good registered stock will put on more weight in a shorter amount of time. Any that are sold should fetch a decent price. Again, just enough rabbits to feed your family. Their manure is great to raise worms. Might be a good alternative to pigs.
Great video. I live in Upstate SC zone 7b and I have noticed I. The past 2 years that ours springs have been cooler (especially nighttime temps) and I am struggling a little with spring planting times as well. Looking forward to following along with your progress. May God bless your efforts.
I'm in 7b also. Temps are so wacky. My brassicas are still coming on nicely. I should have already planted my tomatoes, peppers and all the rest. Nope....I do not trust the weather. Waiting till May here. Our last frost date is April 15 I think. But, not this year.
So much going on but all of your dreams are coming true. Best of luck. Your greenhouse is amazing. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to seeing how Dan is doing.
A sad but smart and necessary move. So many are struggling on their homesteads and spending way more than they are taking in and it's causing a rift between couples . One needs to know when to do the right thing. It's just my husband and myself and not worth it raising meat . Costs way more in feed not to mention time and space . We purchase from other home growers . Nothing wrong with that . We know where it came from and how it was raised
I like how you think about what best for your family and for the animals. So happy for your bees making it through the winter. I wanted to tell you about your log cabin it is beautiful. I was thinking about you sealing it again I did the burn that I saw that they were doing on the Little Houses. On my porch and percula I love it they are pressure treated and are at the time over 15-18 years old. It made them dark but brought out the grain I got the torch that goes on the portable propane cylinder you use on a camp stove. I did put the clear Thompson's water seal on it to after it has been over 2-3 years and it has stayed perfect. I love it if you let me know a emil I will send a picture.
To cut down on chicken feed, best way is having a compost pile for them. They work the compost, fertilize it and they get lots of protein from bugs in it. RUclips Chanel edible acres as good videos on this
Love your videos!! So happy that you are keeping your property, and have a plan. I am grew up, and still live; along the Kansas/ Oklahoma line. Central region. We are experiencing some drought. So, selling cows; has been happening. We are at the moment getting the first real rain, in about 8 months. We will see how the garden goes this year. Best wishes .
Thanks for the update, Chelsea! I know you and Dan are making wise decisions for your farm and your family. My seedlings are doing pretty well, but they are still in the house. I haven’t ever put them in my high tunnel, I guess I’m afraid it would get too hot during the day and too cold at night. Maybe I’ll try it with a few of my tomatoes and see how they fare.
I used to buy a big bag of feed like 1500 pounds for my animals and it was only 150 dollars. But that was before covid and all the craziness. Of course you need a way to hall that much a trailer or a heavy duty truck.
I forget what you use on your garden beds as amendments. Do you amend in the spring or the previous autumn as overwinter cover? Be interesting to learn how you manage your coop/barn clear out and ready/prepare it as a compost mulch. Do you use composted clear out from 12 months ago or straight from the barns/coop as a mulch around the seedlings? Your thought process on factoring in no more over-wintering goats and pigs as future compost makers would be interesting vis a vis reducing feed costs. Can you get hold of this from neighbouring farms or do you always have plenty from the cows? Or perhaps you mulch with left over older hay? Sorry to be so nosy, it’s something I’m really interested in 😬 #SadIknow 🥴

WOW what a lot decisions to make to help you stay on the ranch and be self. Bless you and your family and prayers to you
wow you work so good you your husban ,,,,,just amazing jesus bless you keep you
I use a heat lamp in the green house, the red hue helps to ripen the tomatoes and peppers also.
I love that you're going to share both the home keeping and homestead keeping on the same channel. I can't wait to see all the projects and all the changes that the warm weather will bring

I noticed in this video (for the first time) that there's a pool on your property, I would love to know how y'all maintain that & is it sustainable?

160 acres, yes to the plans, we do grade and ditch our own road. 😊
I love your t shirt in this video!

I put cardboard over quack grass, and over 2 seasons it usually takes care of it.

Sure! It’s from AndDairy in Canada and is Turkish made. So far it’s been awesome!
Love the video on your farm .

Setting yourselves up to succeed rather than struggle. Very wise as well as very helpful to us.
Looking forward to the future. Lots of projects coming up. You two are naturals in front of the camera.
I’m so glad Dan is able to work in the farm with you… you guys make a great team ❤❤❤❤

A milk house to keep all the milking gear might be an idea for you...although like you say, it is an excuse for exercise. Plants look great. We were talking about needing to build a milking room before winter. Dan thinks the boiler idea is a good one.
We’re working from home now, together developing as many steams of income as possible.
Good job
Smart thought process. You do work well together. That is a huge blessing.
I am tired just watching!!🌻
I wish you all the best…
I’m watching from Annapolis Maryland USA
When you brought us down to the barn, I was hoping you would show us your adorable bunnies. I'm glad you're doing what is needed to keep the ranch.
I will next time!
Sounds like you've both given this a lot of thought and made some solid. practical decisions. Good for you. No reason these plans shouldn't improve things and give you both a bit of breathing room. Best wishes!
When do you sleep? It is great to see you setting priorities. I find my quarter section challenging at times but a good list always helps.
I nap every afternoon and I'm in bed by 8:30 at the latest. 😊
I appreciate your sharing the thought process behind the changes, it provides a lot of information to consider when running a homestead.
That's a very difficult step that you're taking. I'm glad that you were able to understand what you need and are able to do with limited energy and time. And that you have the strength to follow through.

Yea for up-potted peppers!
