Hi Friends, we are getting so close to being able to plant out the garden, and I can hardly wait! I'm starting to get everything hardened off, and it's a good thing, too, because the greenhouse is bursting at the seams. Dan bought a portable sheep pen for the sheep we got set up, and the chicks are here! I hope you enjoy coming along with us.
    Much love,
    Chelsea

A cattle/hog panel arched over, held in place with rebar pounded into the ground and covered with a tarp works amazingly well for a shelter for animals. If you place the structure in the middle area of four potential runs, you won't have to move it often. You can also get the animals to go into the shelter, block off the openings, and then safely move the fencing.

I’m thrilled that you held the video to show the results of freeze drying! I would absolutely LOVE to own one now that I’ve started pressure canning and am getting into food preservation myself. I doubt I’ll ever be able to afford one but it’s wonderful to see if I ever could just all the things I could do with it! I wondered how freeze drying herbs would turn out and I can’t believe how green they remained!!! I’ve tried dehydrating herbs with a machine and was sadly disappointed with the results I don’t know if I did something wrong but they almost tasted like wet sweat socks when I rehydrated them and they just were horrrible!! So if you ever have any chance to show how to dehydrate herbs I sure could use the lesson!!! Thanks!! God bless and may all or your meat chicks and turkeys continue to thrive and fill your freezer!!🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦

Yes, I agree that's a great idea. If possible get a two tiered rolling cart that you can leave in your greenhouse that will allow for wheeling flats in-and-out when hardening off rather than moving one tray at a time. When you're working in there you can just wheel out until you've finished.

For a shelter for the sheep, have you considered using a tarp? Attach each corner to a post, but make sure you put the entry side higher than the back side so rain water doesn't pool in the center of the tarp and collapse it.

Also I cut the ends off of my store bought celery stalks and rooted them in water….nicely rooted now and I can keep them growing in my window in water and fertilize or plant into sandy soil.
I rooted twenty sweet potato starts from one store bought sweet potato… I could do more but no one wants to grow them and hubby doesn’t like them….but some will become powder after dehydration.

I find that I can harden most of my plants in 4-5 days, keeping an extremely watchful eye on them. Even on the first day I try to give 30-60 minutes of sun if I can. If it's overcast and relatively cool, I find I can leave them out almost all day on the first day. I am in the Denver area where UV is very intense, so that may make a difference, but a week is generally much more than sufficient. Looking forward to your garden this season, Chelsea! It promises to be abundant from the looks of it! :)

I also had potting soil issues. I bought Kellogg brand from home depot. It was basically unfinished compost made from bark. I wasted hundreds of pepper and tomato seeds, not to mention time and electricity for the lights.
Seems like they could have sacrificed alot of quality to push out more product. They could be using municipal compost made from collected yard waste. Also it could be that they are allowing this to happen to discourage new gardeners from growing their own food. There have also been alot of problems with quality of seed. I had a couple packs of bean and pea seeds that I got like 10% germination. They were packed for 2023.

Cheslea, You spoke about the sheep getting blotted.
When we would get one we would bring it into the spare milk room of the house. Then we would tie their legs to lay them down on their side. Then we would take a long knitting needle and insert it between the ribs until it released the gas. Surprisingly the sheep laid still to do this.
I don't remember what two ribs you had to do this? Maybe you could ask your vet if they have ever done this. At least you now know you can help the animal.
P.S. Wear a face mask as the smell is gross. 🐑🐏

I have taken to making my own potting mix because of the same bad experiences you mention. Yes it does have some weeds but right now you wouldn't be any worse off in that regard. So 2 parts of my best fertile soil, 1 or 2 parts of homemade compost depending on how heavy the plants feed, and 1 part play sand. You could take sand out of a creek and sift it if you want, which in that case would totally make it free. Do supplement with organic blood meal and earthworm castings, the latter of which is always easy to make yourself. It's nice to know what you have when you start plants, because a lot of the commercial stuff seems sketchy right now.

Starts look great! I have not had weed issues in the potting mix, but I will say the soil is heavier moss and so the nutrients seem to be lacking and it is showing. I started watering with fish fertilizer shortly after the second true leaf, but should have started sooner. I had poor germination with purple cabbage and celery. I do find the chicks like to eat the wood chips if too small do I now use shavings on the bottom with straw on top.. I do keep the turkeys with the chickens and have no troubles. My oregano and thyme seems to over winter. With it being the first winter for the sage and rosemary, still waiting to see. Your garden is further ahead than mine. Thomas white or Nicholas white? Which hatchery? For a shelter, take a couple wheels off some of the old equipment you don't need - 4 posts with braces and a tarp or scrap plywood as roof - makes it moveable and useable. Reno's look good. Good video!

I guess 80 is hot for you. We’re hitting upper 80’s to low 90’s for a few days then rain & cooler temps for several days. Central Oklahoma-80 is considered just pleasant while we hope the heat of summer won’t stay in the upper 90’s & low 100’s once we hit July. Your seedlings look great!

My potting soil is full of gnats and I had to buy mosquito kill granules and I’m fighting them……my potting soil from Miracle Grow had them last yer…I left the extra bag out all winter to kill their eggs but they merged and 6:15 my new soil from Walmart is loaded with them…
I know Flower Farm has dealt with bugs in her soil and Roots and Refuge with toxic garden soil…the companies are using a lot of junk waste in their mixes .
I have gone into our woods and collected my own compost for filling my grow bags. I shred some cardboard in them first then kitchen scraps then woodland compost…..I put them out to weather some with sticks poked in them or pine cones to keep cats n critters out. Sticking wood stakes or hard stems from a pompous bush gives me a structure to clip tulle onto to keep moths from laying eggs. For my tomatoes I’m making a simple hoop house to protect them in.
I intend to buy portable deer netting fence to put around the garden area.
I had a vole get into my art studio in my barn where I grew seedlings and eat my plants. Found it dead in my cats water dish….
Something got into my greenhouse which usually I keep closed and flipped over four trays I had planted seeds in.
It makes you want to quit and buy from a market….especially when your husband is not much of a veggie eater and I make powders from them to put in recipes. I’m
