I love homemade split pea soup. It was my sister's favorite, and I had the amazing honor to make this for her the last week she was with us while she was on hospice. I will always cherish her smile when she ate it and will feel close to her every time I make and eat this soup.

I always start making broth from a ham hock and will use the ham bits in the soup. Pea soup usually planning ahead. Broth one day and overnight in fridge. Next day skim off fat then add the ingredients. Pea soup in a couple of hours. Winter must at least twice a year to make huge pot. 😊

I love your self sufficient lifestyle so much I’d like to emulate it! Have you considered writing a book about your life building and sustains a farm.

By the way we are first in line for your yummy cookbook.

Split pea is my favorite soup on a cold day! I often make it in the pressure cooker, as did my mother. Making it brings back wonderful memories of my mother teaching me to cook. For us, cheddar biscuits with chives are a typical accompaniment to the soup. I also make all my yogurt in the instant pot. Works great for me but I don’t make anywhere near the quantities that you need.

The soup resembles a traditional Dutch dish called Snert.
We have been making this soup in the winter for centuries.
In addition to the pork, smoked sausage is also often used.
The first recipe dates from 1520 and was really a farmer's soup.
Later it was also served to the skater in stalls on the side of frozen ditches and rivers.
This is still done to this day together with hot chocolate.

Best of luck with your cook books! Can't wait to hear more:) My great aunt Gusty was a FABULOUS cook. Especially her desserts. I googled her name one day because I couldn't remember the name of the cemetery where she was buried. Low and behold, she was in a Wisconsin cookbook! It was filled with recipes from women around the state. Her recipe was for a wonderful chocolate cake and frosting. I make it often with good thoughts of times spent at her house. Also, it was interesting because the women were referred to by their husbands names. I had never used butter milk before that:)

Your biscuit and jam with thhe pea soup reminded me of someting I eat that everyone thinks is wierd. A long time ago, I worked with a woman who had severaal kids and didn't have time to eat before coming to work. She would make scrambled or hard boiled eggs and toast, then put blackberry jam on one of the two toast slices and make a sandwish out of it. It turned the eggs kind of a blackish color, but it was delish. I have made them ever since, more than 40 years .

Hi Chelsea, Great recipes. While baking powder biscuits are not part of my culinary vernacular, I understand the sweet savoury combo with the soup and jam biscuits. I grew up with a summer dish of a light green bean soup accompanied by a plum cake made from lightly enriched yeast dough (1 egg, molten butter and a wee bit of sugar) thickly covered with the destoned raw plums (preferably very ripe or add a light sprinkling of sugar, if sour) and baked like a pizza on a round baking tray. And then tug in, soup spoon in right hand and a large wedge of cake in the left, dripping with fruit juices ... YUMMY!! Thanks for evoking this childhood memory :)

It is very possible that I missed the info on cookbook prices. Could you direct me to where I can get them and to place an advance order. I love your site and the great example your family sets. I have to say I planted seeds this year after many years of not. My mother was an avid gardener and sold much to her customers - I think word of mouth. My young brother inherited her love as well as my sister and some myself. Shade is my problem and any dirt was devoted to tomatoes. I usually use big pots and never get tired weather it is the animals, garden, baking and cooking. Thanks for all your hard work. I also live in the north (northern Minnesota -Zone 3 I think) but our snow is slow at melting - no mud in site. This calls for patience.
